Celebrities have a great effect on the people we become. Some people spend so much time consumed by the entertainment world that they begin to idolize certain celebrities in hopes of becoming like them. Two major starlets in the eye of countless teenage girls around the world would be Jennifer Lawrence, known for her starring role as Katniss Everdeen in the film The Hunger Games, and Miley Cyrus, a hit singer with number one songs, “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball”. These two stars both have large and supportive fan bases, but which celebrity is the better role model for teenage girls is the question at hand. Jennifer Lawrence is a better role model for teenage girls than Miley Cyrus because of her beliefs, modesty, and humbleness.
To begin with, Jennifer Lawrence is a better role model for teenage girls than Miley Cyrus because of her beliefs. Jennifer Lawrence’s ideals have a deeper positive influence on her fans. She cares a great deal about what her fans think in regard to body image. “I’m never going to starve myself for a part… I don’t want little girls to be like, ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner,’” Lawrence explained to Elle magazine. (Marcus) On the other hand, Miley Cyrus appears to have few morals when it comes to her ideals. Cyrus tends to focus on what she thinks will benefit herself while rarely taking into consideration the effect she has on her fans. To illustrate, Cyrus encourages any innuendo such as partying, drinking, and drug use. Cyrus’s hit song “We Can’t Stop” is practically an anthem to her fans, where she encourages them to do whatever they please with no regard to the rules. An example from the song that encourages said behavior is “We like to party, dancing with Molly.” ...

...and trashy. Lawrence is humble instead of self-absorbed like Cyrus. Lawrence encourages teenage girls to be better version of themselves, while Cyrus knocks down their morals like a wrecking ball. Society should not want the future generation of the world influenced by a celebrity with a negative appeal, instead of a celebrity with a greater moral impact. When it comes to choosing who earns the role of role model, we must keep in mind valued ideals, such as good morals, modesty, and humbleness. Happy choosing and “may the odds be ever in your favor!”

If a teenager or pre-teen is focused on particular celebrities and their goal is too look like them, it is not difficult to slip into acting like them as well, or at least being influenced by their behavior and perceived attitudes. The media abounds with bad examples of celebrity behavior, from Justin Bibber driving recklessly to Miley Cyrus parading around scantily clothed, and although every celebrity is not a terrible role model, a disproportionate amount of them can be found to have shaky morals and seem to have let the attention that they receive affect their behavior. In addition, the perfect bodies that most of them display are not realistic and in some cases not even naturally attainable, thanks to the modern tools of plastic surgery, augmentations, liposuction, and other cosmetic surgeries. The media too contributes to the unreal portrayal of models and famous people by using airbrushing on pictures and other editing that lead regular people to compare their bodies to images that are not even humanly possible. The Barbie-like models that girls compare themselves to and the ripped and muscled men that boys compare their bodies to are often completely unnatural and the people who have somehow attained them are,
What kind of example are these celebrities providing to teenagers when they can barely control their life? Role models are supposed to be someone you admire, someone you look up to and try and follow their example. Not someone who lives a fake life and you barely know. As stated in an article called “Why this generation is so completely obsessed with the idea of Celebrity” Adam Pliskin explains the real reason why we follow celebrities as much as we do. This is because we secretly want fame ourselves.
scandalous behavior would be Miley Cyrus. A daughter of country singer, Billy Ray Cyrus, then as an extremely favored Disney star, Hannah Montana- was just a start to the Miley Cyrus we know today, a tongue-swinging, sedulous-twerking pop sensation. Cyrus has become recognized for recent behaviors, such as, explicit sexual expression at the MTV Video Music Awards, drug use, and rapid mood swings.
If there is one individual in the celebrity world that is known for his or her troubled thoughts or misbehavior, there isn’t anyone better to recognize other than Lindsay Lohan. An American star, model, and singer, Lohan was recognized in all different aspects of Hollywood because of her talents as a young actress. However, as her stardom continued to progress, so did the instability in her mental health. The mass media and people alike had an influence on Lohan’s behavior by distorting how she was portrayed on and off the screen. Lohan’s family life also had a huge impact on her turnout because she was constantly around the instability of her family members, thus affecting her mental
A substantial influence in preserving this notion of culture as a trend comes in part from the impact of celebrity and popular culture. When discussing celebrity influence in her interview, hooks primarily discusses Madonna’s use of black culture to reproduce her image. Currently, this idea of appropriating culture to redefine a celebrity’s stardom is most associated with Miley Cyrus. In a recent interview with Vibe magazine, Timothy and Theron Thomas, the writers and producers behind Miley Cyrus’s hit single “We Can’t Stop,” discussed her new music. They stated that Cyrus had wanted something “that was urban, something that felt black (Platon),” an arguably good business move because she is now more famous than she has ever been. However, Cyrus’s new level of fame does not solely generate from hooks’ belief in America’s obsession with blackness. It also correlates with hooks’ discussion of the black woman’s experience in Ain’t I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism. Black women are presumably the lowest ranking in the social system of hierarchy. Thus American consumers, who are primari...
The attitudes and morals expressed in Hannah Montana often reflected those of her real life as Miley Cyrus. During several episodes of Hannah Montana, Montana was placed in situations that caused her to have to make a decision based on her the things her parents had taught her. After much thought, Montana typically made the decision to do what was morally and socially acceptable. This type of attitude and leadership made Hannah Montana a role model for many young girls around the country. After the ending of the long-lived Hannah Montana series, the suppressed identity of Miley Cyrus emerged.
She was unable to portray her true identity then, so it is logical for her to attempt to become herself now. Throughout her youth, Cyrus was able to grasp the idea of public image. She “loves being naked” and has been able to show that throughout her performances and TV screenings (“Miley Cyrus: Her Plans”). Cyrus has talked about her nudity with many television hosts including Jimmy Kimmel. She described her experience at a nudist beach, especially how she was able to see the different types of confident people (“Miley Cyrus: Her Plans”). Cyrus believes in self-expression and the ability to be who you are. This claim has allowed Miley to sell by exploiting her body. She loves being an exhibitionist, often seen in her public appearances. These acts have allowed Miley to move from one end of the spectrum to the other, from traditional to non-traditional values. She is able to rid herself of her childhood filters and now portrays herself in a more personal and scandalous light. She uses her new image as a technique to sell herself and stay relevant in pop culture. Her rebellious attitude, most probably from her life experiences as a child actress, provides her the ability to be profitable by being
"Music is what I breathe, what I love to do. It keeps me alive, " Miley Cyrus once said. Her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, knew even as a baby, Miley could sing (Miley Cyrus Quotes). She has an extraordinary story. One day Miley was just a normal girl and what seemed like the next day, a pop star. She was introduced to fame at a very young age and is now still growing up in front of the world. She was born Destiny Hope Cyrus because her parents believed she would achieve greatness (Miley Cyrus Biography). They had a lot of hope and promise for their young daughter. Miley is one of the most successful kids from Disney and now she is rising to fame all on her own. It is hard having everyone watch your every move and being constantly photographed, but she deals with it because she loves what she does. Miley Cyrus has led a very unique life both through her childhood and teen life.
Demi Lovato, one of today's most influential and inspiring women that is seen in the media spot light opened up about having an eating disorder. This Disney star told Robin Roberts, and ABC News reporter, that she had been bulimic and ultimately had to check into Timberline Knolls, a rehab center that focuses on eating disorders and addictions. At a young age she had been bullied because she was told she was too fat. For Demi, this caused her to begin overeating extremely and limiting her eating to a few times a day. While on a concert tour for “Camp Rock 2” she would perform without having anything to eat and would lose her voice by making herself vomit. After her treatment she said she wanted to get her story out so other young girls know they don’t need to suffer through what she did. Demi’s younger sister Madison, is one of those girls who look up to her and she knew that she had to stay strong and overcome her problems for her sister and set a good example for her ("Demi Lovato Interview: Teen," n.d.). In today’s society, more than ever, the way people view themselves and others has become a focus. Modern society now has preconceived concepts of what people should look like in order to be beautiful, like what size they are, the color of their hair, the color of their skin, and even their race are factors that are considered. Most problems with body image issues come from what is put in the media. What once was considered beautiful in magazines years ago, such as curves in women, have now changed to rail thin bodies, like those of runway models which are constantly seen on television. Because the ideal of human beauty changes throughout time, trends in body type, fashion, and race negatively impact society.
teenagers see her as a role model and would like to become her as they
At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, Miley Cyrus performed a highly sexual performance that exploited her as she twerked on her performance partner, Robin Thicke, while wearing virtually nothing. Most of the world was left in shock, asking why Cyrus would do this as she was already a successful Disney Channel star. In fact, Cyrus was blamed for promoting the pornification of women and being a bad role model. Although, Thicke, engaging in the act just as much as Cyrus and being sixteen years her senior, received very little backlash. Why was Cyrus blamed more than Thicke? Why did Cyrus engage in this highly sexual act on a public stage in the first place? Did Cyrus feel the need to do this in order to make herself relevant and prove that she
...many little girls dream of being, she is now famous for much different choices. Miley has gone from teenage pop sensation to shocking her audiences by flaunting herself around the world. She states in US magazine, “I want to see people sing along and participate in my show.” She does not want to see phones in front of her fans faces. She wants to see people having a great time and enjoying her show (Nome, 49). Miley Cyrus has done many shocking and remembering things in her life but still has big plans for her future.
One of the most talked about celebrities in social media is Jennifer Lawrence, and most of the people today define her as a ‘cool girl’. In an article entitled, “Jennifer Lawrence And The History Of Cool Girls” by Anne Helen Petersen, a BuzzFeed Contributor, she stated that to be a cool girl you need to “be chill and don’t be a downer, act like a dude but look like a supermodel”. She then proceeds on describing Jennifer Lawrence’s life and other girls that are labeled cool. To be a cool girl means becoming one of the boys, not caring what you look and
In American culture today, society's view of beauty is controlled by Hollywood, where celebrities are constantly in the lime-light. The media watches Hollywood's every move, and is quick to ridicule “A-listers” whenever they dare to gain a few pounds or to let an uncontrollable pimple show. The media has created a grossly distorted mental image of what should be considered beautiful, and with almost every junior high and high school-age girl reading and viewing this message, the idea has been instilled in them as well. This view of beauty is causing many teenage girls to become obsessed with a highly problematic and unattainable goal of perfection.
Ever since I was in eighth grade, I have been obsessed with Taylor Swift. She has been my role model since I was thirteen. When you look at most singers today, they have to be singing about drugs or alcohol, using vulgar language, or performing half-dressed. You never see Taylor Swift doing anything that she would be ashamed of later in life. On the other hand, she has had many relationships that have lasted short time periods. At least, she is not getting married for 72 days or even 24 hours such Kim Kardashian or Britney Spears. This is why I chose to write a research paper on her.
