Women have been there alongside men ever since the very beginning and yet they are deemed inferior. Women have walked the same steps but they are living in the shadows. Throughout history men have always been given the glory and were shown as “powerful’ and women to be fragile and weak individuals, never really given a voice, women just followed the strict mold society had provided for them. The roles for a woman was never anything important, rarely working outside of teaching and nursing, a majority of them would stay home and tended for the house and family. It wasn’t until the years of 1880-1920 that they began to fight for freedom and independence. Women were finally being listened to, they were no longer scared to speak up, and as a whole, changed the economy for the better. Together “ women advocated not only for right to vote, which they won in 1920, but also for workplace fairness, minimum wages, abolition of child labor”(How did Women’s Role Change). Winning the right to vote gave women a huge step towards equality not only for them but for all. Voting gave women a voice and allowed them to speak up for what was beneficial. Women helped established work fairness, this helped reassure that workers, no matter the gender nor race, would not be discriminated against during work hours. As a result of these acts done by women, the life for women have finally seemed to be positively impacted and equality did not seem out of reach. Furthermore, a majority of big companies or manufacturers were owned by men and it was very rare to see a big organization owned or ran by entirely only females. It wasn’t until 1890 when women were working towards establishing the 19th amendment, the National American Woman Suffrage Association was formed “ under the leadership of Elizabeth Cady Stanton. During this same year, Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr found Hull House, a settlement house project in Chicago's 19th Ward. Within one year, there are more than a hundred settlement houses--largely operated by women--throughout the United States”(Women’s Suffrage). This organization owned by women showed that women were capable of managing, organization, and running larger corporations. This gave many women in this time hope as they saw an organization with the name of a female, which was very rare, and they saw that women were raising in power.
