The play centers around the plight of Hermia, who is engaged to Demetrius, whom she does not love and of Helena, who has an unrequited love for Demetrius. The play’s other female characters include, Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons and Titania, queen of the Fae. The play has many themes, but one of the most prevalent ones is how Shakespeare portrays the women. From the insubordinate bride, Hermia, to the warring Queen Hippolyta, is would seem that throughout the satire, Shakespeare weaves a criticism of the gender roles of the time period. At the onset of the play, Egeus’ drags his daughter, Hermia before the king to pay for her rebellion against his will for her marriage to Demetrius, by submission or death. His attitude towards Hermia’s rebellion is a stark reflection of his view on women, that they were little more than property. King Theseus, however, shows mercy and gives her a third option: become a nun and live her life without any man. The main issue for Egues, is that if his daughter succeeds in her rebellion, it is a slap in the face and shows him as weak and Faced with these harsh realities, she decides to take matters into her own hands. Hermia prepares to run away with her love, Lysander. She is a character driven by love. Love is difficult, though, as Lysander says in one of the play’s most famous lines, “Ay me, for aught that I could ever read/Could ever hear by tale or history/The course of true love never did run smooth…” (I.i.132–134). As the play unfolds, Hermia continues to defy her father’s wishes, and in the end, with the ... ... middle of paper ... ...is no longer a warrior, and is instead docile and committed to Theseus, a result of love and like the other women, love is something that has much power over her behaviour. In contrast, Titania, queen of the fairies is a force to be reckoned with. The fighting between her and the king of the fairies, King Oberon has caused changes in the weather due to it’s intensity; huge storms that are wreaking havoc for Fae and mankind alike. She is made to be a fool for it by Oberon, though. He causes her to fall in love with Bottom (who has the head of an ass) and laughs as she follows blindly after him, calling him beautiful and taking him to bed.Titania has a strong will, but she eventually bends to Oberon after realizing what he’s done to her. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a play that explores the traditional gender roles of Shakespeare’s time but is still relevant today.
