Teacher Development in the Classroom Is hard to obey and pay attention to a person that is not part of your close circle. Teachers always struggle with the students because the teacher has to catch the attention of all the students in its classroom. The movie Freedom Writers show the development and skills that made the teacher, successful. First of all, the teacher is challenged when started with freshman students with a bad background and at the age where the students have too much rebellion. According to the Psychology Applied to Teaching book some standards of a good teacher are that “teachers are committed to students and their learning, teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning, teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience” (Snowman et al., 2004, p. 3). The teacher from the movie showed this characteristic first sticking to make the students learn something by figuring out how to be closer to them. The teacher in the movie monitored each student by looking at their background when they let the teacher read their journals. Now that she knows how to catch the student’s attention she used the same technique when she taught the same students in the sophomore year. The book shows some points on how to maintain the student’s interest. Some of the points mentioned in the book relate closely to what the teacher did in the movie. “The opportunity to work on a task with other” (Snowman et al., 2004, p. 417). The teacher made the students work together as a class and not with their own groups. “The opportunity to engage hands-on activities” (Snowman et al., 2004, p. 417). The teacher made them participate by volunteering in doing things. “The teacher’s use of games and puzzles” (Snowman et al., 2004, p. 417). The teacher in the movie made some fun games involving the students during the class. The teacher in the movie did a great job of catching the interest of the students. The qualities that the teacher had in the movie do match with the information on the book. At first the students showed disinterest in the class, but the teacher didn’t give up. Then the teacher showed that she had an interest in the students and that she did care about their students by getting two more extra part time jobs. The teacher showed the superior qualities by doing some activities that the book shows. How does this relate to how you see yourself as a teacher? I appreciated how the teacher was spontaneous in reading to the children. For example, in the story Otis makes a noise putt puff putted chuff and she asked the students to mimic the noise that Otis made. I think that by being spontaneous and being sensitive to the environment and atmosphere learning will be fun and more memorable for the children.
Students are motivated by many different things, for example Carly is motivated by chips. I remember when I was younger and took flute lessons, my teacher would give me candy if I practiced in between classes and improved. It also takes some students longer than others to learn things. It took Carly until she was 10 to really express herself. Even once she started typing she had to learn how to spell the words she wanted to write, she also had to learn to form sentences from those words. Some students might take longer than others to learn, as a future teacher we must be patient with the students and find the best way for them to learn the material. Another part of the book I found upsetting is when the general education teacher said she could not teach Carly anymore. She gave up on her without trying much to help Carly. They began to work together to do good like when the students held a concert to get a guest speaker or when their teacher got another job just to get the students books the students where in a dark place and their teacher showed them the light. Most of the students were in gangs and bad situations but she took them out of that. The quote connects to the story because as it states they will stand by you in your darkest moments and Ms. Gruwell encouraged all of the students in their darkest moments when they were all so against one another and turning their back on school she stood by them and didn’t give up. He stressed the part of language and the significance of cooperations and relationships amongst grown-ups and kids. He trusted that the individuals, such as teachers, parents/guardians or people of kin, help build the learning of children. This was obvious in my observation, the teacher was a good model of this. For the first part of the day (during free time), the teacher allow the students to explore and play to their liking. But to the class being small, she could see and what everybody was doing without strolling around the room. One thing I notice was how well behaved the the kids were, which reduced the requirement for the teacher to constantly watch out for troublemakers. While four of the children where playing the duck, duck, goose game, she strolled over to them and began walking behind the leader and tapping the kids on the heads too, they thought it was so amusing. She encouraged the "goose" to run and catch the leader. The first boy that was selected as a goose, became a little upset when they did not catch leader. The teacher took an positive approach and explain to the young boy, that it was okay, it was game and that he would get another chance. Overall, the kids connected and played with each other well. Erin Gruwell began her teaching career at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California where the school is integrated but it’s not working. Mrs. Gruwell is teaching a class fill with at-risk teenagers that are not interested in learning. But she makes not give up, instead she inspires her students to take an interest in their education and planning for their future as she assigned materials that can relate to their lives. This film has observed many social issues and connected to one of the sociological perspective, conflict theory. Freedom Writers have been constructed in a way that it promotes an idea of how the community where the student lives, represented as a racially acceptable society. Both Erin Gruwell in Freedom Writers and Jamie Esclante in Stand and Deliver faced students stuck in low-income backgrounds and neighborhoods of crime. Despite the low achievement of these students, both teachers were able to foster a mastery of a subject to their students. Even though the subjects of English and math are extremely different, one method united both teachers and allowed them to teach their students effectively— trust. Erin and Jamie were successful because of the trust they put in their students.

The movies of “The Blind Side” and the “Freedom Writers,” are two different genre films, they follow different itineraries and ideas. Movies can be seemly different, but can have the same message. “The Blind Side” and “Freedom Writers,” are the perfect example of demonstrating how stories can follow different plotlines, but can hold the same meaning. Furthermore, both movies share similarities of people dealing with huge obstacles and overcoming life-changing events that impacted their lives every day. In both films the characters met someone who motivated them and encouraged them to pursue a proper education. After all these radical changes the characters from both movies had a more serious understanding that education is really important for their future.
Freedom Writers deliver the message of hope and teaches the audience that if hard work is put into a task then a purpose to life can change completely if the right decisions are made. This movie delivers that message in a wonderful way by using the ‘ghetto’ as an example to change ones destiny which is truly satisfying. This isn’t the best movie but it is a convincing drama where the emotional scenes often feel real than fake. Freedom Writers was a movie that totally blew the audiences mind away, it was an emotionally, heart touching movie that got people thinking about what happens and what others go through. LaGravenese did a very good job using passages from the actual student’s dairies to pursue the message of the film. This is truly an awesome, incredible, amazing movie that everyone should watch connect with it.
The film Freedom Writers directed by Richard La Gravenese is an American film based on the story of a dedicated and idealistic teacher named Erin Gruwell, who inspires and teaches her class of belligerent students that there is hope for a life outside gang violence and death. Through unconventional teaching methods and devotion, Erin eventually teaches her pupils to appreciate and desire a proper education. The film itself inquiries into several concepts regarding significant and polemical matters, such as: acceptance, racial conflict, bravery, trust and respect. Perhaps one of the more concentrated concepts of the film, which is not listed above, is the importance and worth of education. This notion is distinctly displayed through the characters of Erin, Erin’s pupils, opposing teachers, Scott and numerous other characters in the film. It is also shown and developed through the usage of specific dialogue, environment, symbolism, and other film techniques.
Training future teachers is an important part in a good school system because it gives future teachers superior and inferior examples of how to teach. In college, teachers in training will only use textbooks to study. One problem with only learning how to teach through textbooks is teachers can’t see the process of teaching, they only read it. Cameras also benefit teachers because it shows them how they teach. Thomas Roberts an administrator at Hafen Elementary School in Nevada quotes what some teachers’ feedback is, “‘I didn’t know I leaned to the right when I speak. As far as my supervising teacher’s methods for helping students keep up in class she has many. She talked to me all about multiple intelligences and how each student learns differently. She tries to provide a wide variety of options to her students to better help them learn. She also likes open discussion with her class. When she learns about their interests she does her best to incorporate the things they like into their school work. She provides them with a variety of non-fiction and fiction reading material too. She keeps writing topics open as well. Mrs. Lemons reminded me that all students are different and that it’s important to teach with an open mind and never with just one method. I wholly agree with her opinion and I see her put her thoughts into successful actions every morning.

These lesson plans must also consider the effective ways of instilling discipline in the students. The teacher must allow for response from the students so that he may understand the students’ perception of reality, value systems, and will, so that he may understand how to motivate his students more. Over the course of observations, I learned that there is no one way to do anything in teaching. After a few weeks of observing, I was relieved because I thought that I could stop worrying so much about doing the “right” thing with the students. I saw a successful teacher doing, or neglecting to do things that went against what I had been taught. I incorrectly assumed that the choices the teacher made about how to organize the day, approach a lesson, or manage the classroom were mostly a matter of personal preference and that several approaches would produce equally desirable results.
