The Ramayana is one of the two major epics of modern Hinduism along with the Mahabharata. The Ramayana tells the story of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu. The epic could be thought of as a classic tale of how dharma was restored through a great battle. In the Hindu tradition Vishnu takes form of avatars to restore dharma on Earth. Vishnu takes the form of Rama to defeat the 10 headed demon Ravana. Ravana favored by the heavens was granted a boon and asked for immortality. He can only be killed by a human but not the divine or demons. Rama is borned to the ruling family of Ayodhya but is exiled for 14 years. His brother Lakshman and his wife Sita join him in exile. While living a simple life in the jungle Sita is captured by Ravana and taken to Lanka. Rama with the aid of Lakshman & Hanuman form an army to save Sita. Ravana tries to persuade Sita to marry him but she refuses. Rama’s army in the end defeat Ravana and Rama takes his place as king of Ayodhya. On might consider Rama to be the most important character but Sita is the most crucial character in the story. The Ramayana focuses on Rama’s journey but Sita is single handedly the most important character in the story. Without Sita, Rama would have never achieved his destiny and thus Vishnu would have not restored dharma to the world. While in exile Sita is kidnapped by Ravana and this event launches the events that follow. Rama forms an army and confronts and defeats Ravana. This the entire reason why Vishnu comes to earth to confront and defeat Ravana. Killing Ravana represent the restoration of dharma. Dharma would have never been restored if the confrontation never happened and this would have never happened if Sita was not
The ancient Mesopotamian writing, The Epic of Gilgamesh, gives readers insight into the traditions and customs of the people who wrote it. Like all epics, The Epic of Gilgamesh is the story of a heroic national figure: this epic gives the story of the life of Gilgamesh from his birth as two-thirds god, one-third man to his death. Throughout the epic the importance of loyalty is addressed. In The Epic of Gilgamesh readers see that loyalty is the most important aspect of a Mesopotamian relationship and that there are always consequences for violating trust.
While preparing to write this paper, I thought it would be great just to focus on the heroes of these two great epics many differences. Although during the course of my research I found that they also had just as many similarities. In this paper I will focus on the two characters by expressing their differences, as well as their similarities, and I will also give a bit of history about our two heroes.
The Epic of Gilgamesh has many similarities to The Legend of King Arthur. Although Gilgamesh and King Arthur have comparison they also have differences. The main difference is that one is an Epic and the other is a Legend. To compare and contrast The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Legend of King Arthor, one must first know what the words, "Epic" and "Legend" mean. Primarily, "epic" is a long narrative poem about the deeds of a semi-god, also known as a superhuman hero who's actions are depended on as the fate of a nation, tribe or a human race. This usually consists of an adventure filled plot and is concerned with timeless human problems such as honour, jealousy, war and hatred. These contain gods and goddesses and the setting is fixed in a far distant place at a time long past. Epics are based on legends and myths.

Throughout Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi displays the vital role that the women around her have in developing her character and becoming the woman she is today. Women such as her mother, her grandmother, her school teachers, the maid, the neighbors, and even the guardians of the revolution influenced Marjane and caused her to develop into an independent, educated, and ambitious woman. Throughout the novel, Marjane never completely conforms or lets go of her roots, this is primarily due to the women who have influenced her.

The epic hero’s journeys hold the hopes for future of ordinary people’s lives. The Epic of Gilgamesh was written in approximately 2000 B.C.E which is highly enriched with Ancient Mesopotamian religions, and The Ramayana was written by ancient Indians in around 1800 B.C.E. The stories were written in two different parts of the world. However, these two stories etched great evidence that show people from generation to generation that different cultures and religions are interconnected; they share ideas with each other. Both Gilgamesh and Rama traveled long journeys in these tales. These epic journeys played a role in the creation of different archetypes. The Ramayana is the most famous and well-known of all Indian epics, originally based on an epic poem, it has taken many variations and forms over the centuries. Traditionally the story centers on the hero Prince Rama, who is the embodiment of virtue and perseverance, as he is wrongfully denied his birthright of being crowned king and instead is unjustly exiled into the forest where he encounters his fair share of dilemma. In R. K. Narayan’s condensed, modern version of The Ramayana, the classic conflict of duality is a predominant theme, as Rama faces many instances of uncertainty and trivial chaos which are eventually balanced by order and goodness under the laws of karmic causation and dharma alike which he virtuously strives to uphold. Nina Paley’s animated film “Sita Sings the Blues” takes a lively, musical, and very modern approach to the classical Indian epic The Ramayana.
The film “Sita Sings the Blues” and “Ramayana the Epic” are two versions of the Ramayana but were portrayed in different ways. “Sita Sings the Blues” was presented by Nina Paley based on Valmiki 's version of the Ramayana and she showed the side that many people don 't know and fail to accept about the Ramayana, Sitas side of the story. She doesn 't portray Rama to be the ideal husband although he goes through the trouble of saving Sita. In the film “Sita Sings the Blues” Nina Paley did not show Lakshmana throughout the whole journey of Rama leaving Ayodhya and trying to finding Sita. Valmiki's Ramayana was written around 300 B.C.E. (Carrier 207). Typically, the character of Rama is seen as the hero and the character of Sita is seen as the hero's wife. In this essay, I will compare Sita's journey of capture and inner growth with the "save the kingdom" journey of Rama, show how the two correlate, and eventually connect in the influential chastity scene. I will also prove that Sita is the "hidden hero" of this epic even though she is seen as taking a secondary role to Rama and show how this reflects women's secondary roles in society today.
R.K. Narayan’s translation of The Ramayana brings out the characteristics of an ideal Indian woman and everything that these women shouldn’t be. The women of respect and those that should be looked up to have beauty that is both physical and spiritual. The good women make loyal, thoughtful wives and have a sense of maternal instinct. The bad women are those that rely solely on their physical beauty and are manipulative. They do not respect men and in fact go against all the advice the men in their life give them, even if it is good advice. The ideal Indian woman is beautiful, respectful, and puts the men in their lives above all other individuals. The women in The Ramayana portray everything about society’s ideals about Indian women, both the good and the bad characteristics.

The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Odyssey both are held in high respect by literature analysts and historians alike for the characterization of the hero and his companion, the imagery brought to mind when one of them is read, and the impressive length in relation to the time period it was written in. The similarities that these two epics share do not end with only those three; in fact, the comparability of these works extend to even the information on the author and the archetypes used. However, The Odyssey and The Epic of Gilgamesh contrast from one another in their writing styles, character details, and main ideas. Both epics weave together a story of a lost man who must find his way, but the path of their stories contrast from one another.
In contemporary society, feminism is emerging as a theory of social construct. In literature it is often challenging to discover female characters that go beyond the limits of marginalized female stereotypes and roles as a means to transgress beyond societal norms. Women are characterized as subordinate objects, amid the dominant patriarchal nature entrenched amid the epic. In The Ramayana, women are portrayed as powerless objects that succumb to the manipulation of men as the text portrays a false empowerment of women, which ultimately succumb to common archetypes accustomed to women in literature; implementing a hierarchy of gender that institutionalizes male dominance amid female inferiority. The women of The Ramayana struggle to oppose the systemic patriarchy and pursue a pathway towards attaining dynamic elements of power, that enable their ability to embody autonomous authority. In Valmiki’s The Ramayana, while women appear to be empowered, ultimately they are feeble instruments utilized to fulfill the desires of men.
