Introduction The media is a source that is integral to most societies around the world. It has the power to shape our every day lives and even facilitate social change, though this is not necessarily a positive thing. The media is well known for the use of hyperbole which can often have detrimental effects on people within society as this can cause moral panics. A moral panic is when a group of people or a particular act committed by a group of people is labelled as a problem that is threatening to the morals of society, "it is an exaggerated response to a type of behaviour that is seen as a social problem – the term indicates an over-reaction on the part of the media and/or other social institutions." This is true in some cases as there have been moral panics that have facilitated social change for the better but I agree with Vivienne Cree 's overall response of 'no ', moral panics cannot be positive overall. They are always an exaggerated response and although the moral panic surrounding Jimmy Saville and the BBC did end up helping many abuse survivors speak up and recieve help, it also caused some false accusations which would have been difficult to separate from the stories of genuine abuse survivors. In the article, “Moral Panics: Culture, Politics, and Social Construction” the authors Erich Goode and Nachman Ben-Yehuda discuss two different perspectives of moral panics. Each perspective give a different way of looking at how moral panics are portrayed to come about in society. The Objectivist perspective and the Constructionist perspective show how people view moral panics. However, the Constructionist perspective is more important and valuable to society than the Objectivist perspective.
The sociological concept of ‘moral panic’ is said to be used by the mass media in an attempt to entertain audiences. Cohen (1980: p. 9) suggests that a fear-provoking event or condition is covered by the media, with individuals who may have political agendas suggesting their own methods of prevention to the listening audiences (as cited in Altheide 2009, p. 79-80). Moral panic in relation to certain crimes can be seen as a possible explanation to the growing prison population. Societies can sometimes be exposed to periods of moral panic. A condition, episode, person or group of people appears as a threat to certain societal standards and interests. This phenomenon is depicted in a stylized and stereotypical fashion and presented to the public through the moral perspective of editors, bishops, politicians, and other influential people, whose principles define the societal values. These people pronounce their diagnoses and resort to certain ways of coping (although, sometimes, the parties can come to an agreement and a way of coping could evolve). Every now and then the object of the panic is quite unusual, although mostly it is something that has been debated for a long time, but that suddenly appears in the spotlight. A media panic, or often referred to as a moral panic, is a term that describes how the media is formulating issues amongst our society. Over time, our culture has shifted and caused many conclusions regarding media panics and the relationship between youth and the media culture. Based upon previous knowledge and course readings, I have drawn a very disturbing conclusion; this being that no matter what age, children are willing or non-willingly now under surveillance to determine what kind of role media is playing in their lives. With what I have gathered from the readings and class lectures, most authors strongly believe that different forms of media directly influence children's thinking or perception. What authors and researchers continue to imply is that there is a direct correlation to what youth today see in different forms of media and their behaviours.

From the moment we open our eyes to the instant we shut them, we are surrounded by media and absorb the information it hurls at us in an osmosis-like manner. Whenever a society perceives that there has been an increase in a particular type of crime due to increased media coverage this is known as a crime wave. Although this does not necessarily mean that there has been an increase in that particular crime and some evidence shows that there can actually be a decrease in crime (AIC, 2010). Defined as being generated when moral outrage is created by the media, a moral panic creates labelling certain groups or activities as being deviant and a threat to the social and moral order. The media convey a sensationalised image of crime and a protective view of police and policing practices – and make unusual events usual in our lives (White & Perrone, 2012). To demonstrate these two effects, in an American campaign concerning missing and exploited children the media reported that “thousands of children” were being kidnapped and are missing, creating a public “moral panic”. Reputable sources such as Time Magazine joined in on extraordinary claims that over 800,000 children went missing every year in America. Local television stations also took to broadcasting images of missing children on a daily basis combined these media activities created the illusion of a crime wave. As a result surveys taken then revealed that 75% of America’s parents lived in fear that a stranger may abduct their child (Israel & Swartz, 2000). The definition of mass media is “a means of communication that reaches large numbers of people in a short time, this can consist of the use of television, newspapers, magazine, and radio”, and within the last decade the internet as well. (HarperCollins) The media can actually be a minor or major effect on individuals depending on how or what their view is on the particular subject or matter. The effects it plays on individuals and societies will depend on the exposure to the subject matter at the time, but it effects all ages from young to old.
