In The Complete Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi, family and friends play an important role in Satrapi’s life. Satrapi uses family to keep her grounded and support her. When she leaves for Vienna, she begins to get depressed without that family support, so she replaces that family with friends. Her family protected her and guided her, while her friends allowed her freedom to be her own person. Satrapi’s family built her identity, while her friends helped to shape it. These relationships and experiences both negatively and positively impacted her. Satrapi’s family sparked the rebellion in her. When the revolution started, her parents were protesters of the new shah. Satrapi was a very young girl at that time. She was still learning from her parents and very impressionable. Satrapi learned a lot of lessons from her grandmother and knew she was a strong woman, since her grandfather could not be there for her or his kids most of the time. Satrapi’s used her grandmother to show that people can have difficult lives, but still make the best of things. Her grandmother was the peace in Satrapi’s life during the war. Satrapi’s grandfather was a hero to her. He protected innocent people even though it lead him to live a third of his life in prison. Although he was no longer alive, he was a model for Satrapi during her rebellion. When she came back from Vienna, she had forgotten all that he sacrificed for people he had not even known. Satrapi once turned in an innocent man to save her own skin. When her grandmother found out, she yelled at her and reminded all that her grandfather had sacrificed. This seemed to lead Satrapi back on track to protecting innocent people. Her time in Vienna might have been what made her only save herself when she turned in the innocent
