Milton’s poem Paradise Lost tells the story of Adam and Eve’s creation and how they came to their fall from innocence in the Garden of Eden. The poem does not start from the beginning but rather in the middle of the current action. At this point of the plot, readers already know why God has created Adam and Eve. It appears that God’s ultimate purpose for creating Adam and Eve was so he could pass on his greatest traits into physical form. Adam was created first which led to Eve’s creation for the sole reason that Adam needed a companion. Through the characters of Adam and Eve, Milton has illustrated what a perfect relationship is supposed to be like. From the beginning, the couple is represented as very happy, as they were, “so hand in hand they passed, the loveliest pair/ That ever since in love’s embraces met…(4.321-322). Reader’s come to the conclusion that Adam and Eve represent the perfect idyllic relationship. As the epic poem continues, Adam and Eve’s relationship begins to change as a result of the two’s questionable behavior along with the appearance of Satan in Paradise. Eve is created for Adam, "The likeness, thy fit help, thy other self, / Thy wish exactly to thy heart 's desire" (8.450-451). A Milton purpose chooses specific words such as likeness and fit to show that a hierarchy exists between Adam and Eve. The hierarchy that exists in this poem explains how Eve was led to her fall, and what caused her to fall. The poem presents the idea that Eve is entirely at fault for the fall, but also expresses that many outsides influences caused Eve to fall. From the temptations from Satan, Eve’s desire for freedom and equality, and a deteriorating relationship, Eve was led to fall for many reasons. An example of Eve’s portrayal from the text is, “All who in vain things, Built their fond hopes of glory or lasting fame” this shows that she is vain (Paradise Lost, Book 3, lines 448-449). In the Bible it never describes her as a vain human being, she is not someone who is vain and self-centered. She is portrayed in the Bible as a spiritual being and as someone who is faithful to the Lord. Milton portrays Eve as a being that is not faithful and that is all about herself. This makes Paradise Lost a false doctrine because it portrays Adam and Eve as bad people who consequently partook of the fruit and made everyone suffer. Adam and Eve in the Book of Genesis not only mark a loss of innocence, but for years the story has been used as a biblical teaching. It is an important story that sets up a relationship between God and mankind. The story begins with the phrase, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth," (Pagels, xi). From the opening words of the story God is deemed as the creator. He is the creator, the absolute being from which all other things are created. In the process of God's creation, he repeats the phrase "according to its/their kind," (Pagels, xi). He does this to emphasize that each creature has its own unique function, and to establish that there are limits and boundaries to each creatures existence.
We can see the poem deals with the entire story of man's fall from grace, including background for Satan's motives. In Paradise Lost, Eve was tricked by Satan, who assumed the form of a serpent, into eating from the Tree of Knowledge. Satan had whispered into her ear when she was asleep, and when he spoke to her later, he used his cunning to mislead her:
This affirms what was stated earlier; that in the traditional epic form the hero is defined by traits of bravery, courage, honor and victory but Milton’s reformed epic values freedom in Christ, love, humility and dependence in Christ. Milton’s faith caused these values to be placed above those of the traditional epic. Although the poem ends on a dark event the ending is still somewhat hopeful as Adam and Eve leave the garden hand in hand having acquired these virtues through their error.

In Book IX of Milton’s Paradise Lost, Eve makes a very important and revealing speech to the tree of knowledge. In it, she demonstrates the effect that the forbidden fruit has had on her. Eve’s language becomes as shameful as the nakedness that Adam and Eve would later try to cover up with fig leaves. After eating the forbidden apple, Eve’s speech is riddled with blasphemy, self-exaltation, and egocentrism.
He knows that they are now doomed, but immediately decides that he cannot live without Eve. Eve wants him to suffer the same fate as she. Adam eats the fruit. Both the Bible and Paradise Lost hold Adam and Eve at fault. But, both accounts place one of them in a more negative account. In the Bible, Adam is held in a more negative light, whereas in Paradise Lost, Eve is put into a more negative light. Neither of these depictions is correct, neither source hold them both in contempt for their actions they both committed. It is always one person’s fault, which is not accurate when both partook in the fateful eating of the fruit.
Great works of literature have been written throughout history. However, The Divine Comedy and Paradise Lost have the inept ability to stir the soul and cause a person to examine and re-examine their life. The brilliant descriptions, use of imagery, metaphor and simile give a person a vivid picture of the creation of man and the possibilities for life in the hereafter. This is done, as a person is able to see, full circle, from the beginning of time to the end of time, the consequences of turning away from God. The ability to see a life full circle is apparent through the examination of both of these poems. Although written many years ago, the morals and principles that they convey ring very true for people in this century as well as times yet to come.
In Milton's Paradise Lost, the two images of sex in Books IV and IX sharply contrast one another in order to show the dichotomy of love and lust. The first act of sex is seen in Book IV and represents holy love. Before going into their bower, Adam and Eve make sure to praise God. This awe for their maker is seen when Adam and Eve "both stood,/Both turned, and under open sky adored/The God that made both sky, air, earth and Heav'n" (IV. 720-2). Even the heavens are in unison with Adam and Eve's love. While Eve decorates their "nuptial bed," there are "heaven'ly choirs" singing the "hymnenean sung" (IV. 709, -10). This love of Adam and Eve's is not "loveless, joyless, unendeared" but instead is "loyal, just, and pure" (IV. 766, 755). After their sacred act of sex, Adam and Eve are enraptured with joy and peace. They are "lulled by nightingales" and fall asleep naked, embracing one another (IV. 771). All is perfect in Paradise, but not for long.
A central theme of Paradise Lost is that of the deep and true love between Adam and Eve. This follows both traditonal Christianity and conventional epic style. In Book IV, Eve recalls awakening to consciousness but she is uncertain of her identity and of her place in the Garden of Eden. Eve's first thoughts are of “where and what [she] was, whence thither brought, and how” (Paradise Lost, IV.451-52), and it is this curiosity about her identity that leads Eve to disobey God eventually. From the moment of her conception, Eve is already distant from God because she awakens in the shade and not in God’s light. Throughout Paradise Lost, Eve is identified with reflections, shadows, and dreams. Representing the “otherness” of Eden, Eve is an outcast and she seeks to find meaning in her life. At the moment of her awakening, Eve is engrossed by her reflection in the water, which she thinks is another being. In conclusion, Paradise Lost can be seen through a historically contextual lens that allows us to see the parallels between Milton’s life and experiences during the reign of Charles I, and the predominant themes in his epic poem. Many of the themes in Paradise Lost, from the broader situational occurrences to the behavior of individual character’s and their attitudes toward the situations in which they find themselves can be seen as directly influenced by Milton’s time as a Parliamentarian in 17th century England.
The theme of free will is highlighted at various points throughout Paradise Lost through different characters. Through each characters actions and the element of choice displayed, Milton conveys his view point that while God is omniscient and there is an eternal providence, free will his not hindered. Milton also conveys through Eve that she choose to disobey God, she does so knowing there will consequences, signifying that she does not have the full capacity to reason clearly. Despite his being aware of the paradox that free will and eternal providence present the reader, Milton did not believe that this constrained one’s understanding of Paradise Lost.
