1. After reading the Rock and the River by Kekla Magoo, the theme is dont be afraid to take risks because you dont know what good might come out of it. This book takes place in 1968 in Chicago during the Civil Rights Movement. The main character Sam doesn't know to follow his father in a nonviolent way or his brother, stick in a more violent way. Father is a well-known person at the MLK party. Stick is a part of the bpp(black panther party) which is a group of people who kill racist’s and white cops. I believe the theme is that because on page 188 when the white man is choking, Sam takes the risk of pointing the gun at the man, this shows that Sam is willing to take risks even if Sam doesn't know anything good is going to come out of it. Even when the stick came home, Sam and the stick were getting a little physical. This supports the theme because he is taking a risk by not letting get to it or use it because at first Sam thought it was not right to stick to doing that. He also stood up for himself because he is 17 and he is 13. Also, when Sam and Maxie testify at Bucky's trial, they take the risk by proving Bucky not guilty. This is a risk because they are both black and that every word will be held against them. This shows that he's taking a risk to save his childhood friend. Bucky later proved not guilty.
