Walter Winchell once said, “Never above you. Never below you. Always beside you.” Relationships should be based on people who are equals to each other. People in a relationship shouldn’t have more power over another person. George and Lennie in the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck don’t follow the equality principle while Romeo and Juliet in the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare did. In the beginning of the Of Mice and Men novella, George and Lennie are on a trip to a ranch to get work. Lennie is a big guy who has a mental disability, while George is a small guy who is the boss of the relationship. They are working to get money for their dream home. During their time at the ranch, Lennie gets into a fight with Curley. Lennie …show more content…
also gets a pet puppy, but accidently kills it a few days later. While Lennie was waiting for the other guys at the ranch to finish up their game of tossing the horseshoe, he talks to Curley’s wife. He then accidently kills her by hanging on to her hair because it was so soft. Lennie runs away and George finds him. George then kills Lennie with a gun. In the play Romeo and Juliet, the two households of the Montagues and the Capulets, have a big grudge against each other. In the city of Verona, Romeo had gone to a Capulet party where he first saw Juliet and they immediately fell in love. They got married the next day and after that a brawl broke out. During the brawl, Mercutio, was killed by Tybalt, who killed by Romeo. As a result, Romeo got banished from Verona. During that time, Juliet’s parents arranged her a marriage with Paris. She refused so she faked her death with a potion the night before the wedding. During that time, Romeo only heard that Juliet was dead. He raced to Verona with a poison that would kill him. He fought against Paris and stabbed him. Then Romeo drank the poison and died. Juliet woke up minutes later. Once she saw that Romeo was dead, she stabbed herself, and then she died. Both households were sad that their children were dead. The grudge between them was finally over. Although George and Lennie have a strong relationship because they look out for each other, they have a strong sibling like bond, and they always stick together, Romeo and Juliet have a stronger relationship because they are loyal to each other, they care for each other, and they have an equal sided relationship. In the play Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet are more loyal than George and Lennie which makes them have a stronger relationship. In scene 2 of the play, Romeo was on Juliet’s balcony when he expressed his feelings for her. He said, “‘I have night’s cloak to hide me from their eyes, / And, but thou love me, let them find me here. / My life were better ended by their hate / Than death prorogued, wanting of thy love.’” (2.2.80-83). Romeo is saying how he loves Juliet so much. If she were to die, he would then die too. He can’t live without her. They are very loyal to each other to the point where they will die for each other. Moreover, in scene 4 of the play, Juliet is talking to Friar Lawrence about her desperation and willingness to do anything to not get married to Paris. She says, “‘Or bid me go into a new-made grave / And hide me with a dead man in his shroud / (Things that to hear them told have made me / tremble), / And I will do it without fear or doubt, / To live an unstained wife to my sweet love.’” (4.1.85-90). Juliet is listing off all the things she would do to not marry Paris. She is willing to go into a grave and hide with a dead man. She is also willing to kill herself so that she doesn’t have to be married with Paris. Juliet is so desperate to do anything to be with Romeo. She is very loyal to him. On the other hand, in the novella Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie don’t show as much loyalty towards each other than Romeo and Juliet. In the beginning of the novella, George is yelling at Lennie. He says, “‘An’ whatta I got,’ George went on furiously. ‘I got you! You can’t keep a job and you lose me ever’ job I get. Jus’ keep me shovin’ all over the country all the time. An’ that ain’t the worst. You get in trouble. You do bad things and I got to get you out.’ His voice rose nearly to a shout” (11). George is getting mad at Lennie and blaming him for all the trouble he has caused. George is saying how he will have a better life if Lennie wasn’t there on his journey. He could have a stable job without having to leave every place because he wouldn’t get in trouble. Even though George and Lennie are loyal to each other, they don’t show it as strongly. They frequently argue with each other and George is always the one to be yelling at Lennie. At times like these, George even mentions how he just wants to be alone. Although George and Lennie are there for each other, their relationship isn’t as loyal because George constantly gets mad at Lennie and always wants to leave Lennie behind. When it comes to loyalty, Romeo and Juliet show more loyalty towards each other than George and Lennie. Additionally to Romeo and Juliet being more loyal, they are also more caring for each other than George and Lennie are, which makes them have a stronger relationship.
In scene 3 of the play, Romeo is in Juliet’s room and she is telling him to go. She says, “‘It is, it is. Hie hence, begone, away!’” (3.5.26). Juliet is telling Romeo to leave her room. It is going to be morning soon and Juliet’s family can’t see Romeo in her room. Juliet cares for Romeo a lot. She knows that if her family sees Romeo in her room, they will find out that they are married, and probably get mad at her because Romeo is their enemy. Then they can’t see each other anymore. Juliet is willing to sacrifice time with Romeo to keep him safe which means she deeply cares for him. Similarly, in scene 5, Romeo shows how much he cares for Juliet when he asks his servant Balthasar about Juliet after he got banished. He says, “‘News from Verona!-How now, Balthasar? / Dost thou not bring me letters from the Friar? / How doth my lady? Is my father well? / How doth my Juliet?’” (5.1.13-16). Romeo is asking Balthasar about Juliet and how she is doing. Ever since he got banished, Romeo still hasn’t given up on Juliet yet. He is always asking how Juliet is doing. Romeo really cares about Juliet and her well being. He is looking out for her. While George and Lennie do care for each other, they don’t care for each other as much as Romeo and Juliet do. In the middle of the novella, George is saying mean things about Lennie. He says. “‘Course he ain’t mean. But he gets in trouble alla time because he’s so God damn dumb.’” (41). George is constantly saying how dumb Lennie is. Although they do care for each other, George is always mean to Lennie. He doesn’t show that he cares as much. He is always saying how dumb and stupid Lennie is and how he always has to put up with it. When it comes to having a caring relationship, Romeo and Juliet are more caring than George and
Lennie. Furthermore, Romeo and Juliet have an equal sided relationship whereas George and Lennie don’t, which makes Romeo and Juliet have a stronger relationship. In scene 2 of the play, Juliet is talking to herself about Romeo. She says, “‘Deny thy father and refuse thy name, / Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, / And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.’” (2.2.37-39). Juliet is saying how she will give up her name to be with Romeo. Romeo will also give up his name to be with Juliet. They are equals in their relationship with each other. One person isn’t commanding another. They both love each other and both are willing to do whatever it takes to be with each other. On the contrary, George and Lennie have a one sided relationship. In the beginning of the novella, George is yelling at Lennie to give him the dead mouse. He says, “Lennie hesitated, backed away, looked wildly at the brush line as though he contemplated running for his freedom. George said coldly, ‘You gonna give me that mouse or do I have to sock you?’” (8). George is telling Lennie to give him the mouse. He is threatening Lennie. The relationship between George and Lennie is one sided. George has all the power while Lennie just listens to what George says. Their relationship isn’t equal. Lennie never tells George what to do, it’s always George telling Lennie what to do. In addition, in the beginning of the novella, Lennie is asking George why they aren’t heading to the ranch right away. Lennie says, “‘George-why ain’t we goin’ on to the ranch and get some supper? They got supper at the ranch.’ George rolled on his side. ‘No reason at all for you. I like it here.’” (7-8). Lennie is asking George why they aren’t going to the ranch. George just said that he liked staying out in the nature. George didn’t even consider Lennie’s feelings. He just decides everything for Lennie. Their relationship is one sided. Lennie listens to George most of the time. He doesn’t really get to decide things by himself. All in all, when it comes to equality in relationships, Romeo and Juliet’s relationship is equal sided while George and Lennie’s relationship is not. Therefore, even though George and Lennie have a strong relationship because they are there for each other, they watch each other’s back, and have a brother like bond, Romeo and Juliet are loyal to each other, they deeply care for each other, and their relationship is equal sided which makes them have the stronger relationship. Romeo and Juliet are more loyal to each other than George and Lennie. Both Romeo and Juliet mention how they will die for each other and the desperate things they will do just to be with each other. On the other hand, George and Lennie aren’t that loyal because George always yells at Lennie about how his life would be better off without him. Additionally, Romeo and Juliet care more for each other than George and Lennie. Romeo and Juliet look out for each other and make sure each of them is okay. In contrast, George and Lennie don’t show that they care for each other a lot. George is yelling at Lennie all the time and always says mean things about Lennie. Moreover, Romeo and Juliet have an equal sided relationship, whereas George and Lennie have a one sided relationship. Romeo and Juliet are both equals in their relationship. They are both willing to give up their name to be with each other. On the other hand, George and Lennie’s relationship is not equal. George has power over Lennie and always controls the relationship. Having a strong relationship is important in the real world because if you have a strong relationship with someone, you have the ability to get through anything. In a strong relationship, people look out for each other and have each other’s back. Regardless of what other people say about your relationship, if you truly love each other, you won’t listen to what other people say. A strong relationship is also important because it means that you trust the person you love. You respect that person and you have a positive relationship with them. Having a strong relationship is important.
In chapter one, George and Lennie are introduced onto the scene and you get to know them a little bit and you get to see how they are related/ their relationship. When I read this first part, I could tell that George was pretty much Lennie’s caretaker and it was his job to find Lennie a job and make sure he ate enough and stayed a live. He kind of resented having to drag Lennie around (pg 11~12: “Well we ain’t got any!” George exploded. “Whatever we ain’t got, you want. If I was alone I could live so easy… But wadda I got? I got you. You can’t keep a job and you loose me every job I get.”), because Lennie’s a bit slow and he messes up a lot. He tries really hard to be good and listen to what George tells him to do, but in the end of every situation, Lennie forgets what George told him beforehand and sometimes it creates a little trouble (pg 45~46: “Well, he seen this girl in this red dress. Dumb like he is, he likes to touch ever’thing he likes. Just wants to feel it. So he reaches out to feel this red dress an’ the girl lets out a squawk, and that gets Lennie all mixed up, and he holds on ‘cause that’s the only thing he can think to do. Well, this girl just squawks and squawks. I was jus’ a little bit off, and I heard all the yellin’, so I comes running, an’ by that time Lennie’s so scared all he can think to do is jus’ hold on. I socked him over the head with a fence picket to make him let go. He was so scairt he couldn’t let go of the dress. And he’s so strong, you know… Well, that girl rabbits in an’ tells the law she’s been raped. The guys in Weed start a party out to lynch Lennie. So we sit in an irrigation ditch under water all the rest of that day.”). But when you look at them, you can tell that George is...
is in the air. Animals begin to scatter. Two men have arrived on the scene,
Have you ever read Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck? If so, you probably remember Lennie, George's companion. Throughout the novel, Lennie and George dream of having their own farm. They work on a ranch to save money for their dream farm. Lennie is a big, strong, man with rounded features. He is at times very forgetful, absent-minded, and one-dimensional.
Was George to harsh or too fast with his decision to kill Lennie? Ever since Lennie was born he has needed help “living” and it started with his aunt Clara. When his aunt Clara died Lennie needed someone to help him with his everyday life and someone that could be there and tell him what to do. Lennie starts to travel with a good family friend George. In the book “Of Mice and Men” there is many cases where Lennie just “holds on” to George. George realizes in the end of the book Lennie has done too much harm and needs to essentially go away. George then shoots Lennie in the back of the head because Lennie couldn't live on his own if he were to run away from Curly and the rest of the gang of workers coming after him. George did the right thing because Lennie was unstable and George knows lennie didn't mean to harm anything. He doesn't know his own strength and George really wasn't qualified to help Lennie learn that he is powerful beyond measure.
Of Mice and Men - George and Lennie seem to have a very close friendship
The physical symbiosis of George and Lennie is beneficial to Lennie but detrimental to George. Although George used to hurt Lennie, Lennie now needs George to bail him out of trouble. Lennie also profits because he needs a person to tell him what to do. “He can’t think of nothing to do himself, but he sure can take orders” (39). Lennie is “a hell of a good worker”(22) and able to “put up a four-hundred pound bale” (22) but is likely to get himself in trouble without George’s protective influence. George likes Lennie but would be better off without him because “you (Lennie) can’t keep a job and you lose me ever’ job I get” (11). Lennie hinders George while George helps Lennie.
In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck discusses Lennie, George, and Crooks. In this book Steinbeck wants the reader to understand how life was portrayed in American society back in the day. Steinbeck wants the reader to understand how people were treated differently because of their race and by their mental state. Steinbeck wants the reader to understand how the mindset of Lennie, George, and Crooks affects the story. Steinbeck wants the reader to understand why Lennie was always mistreated and why George was there to take care of him. Steinbeck wants the reader to understand why George answers for Lennie and why he tells Lennie what to do because Lennie could not do anything on his own without getting into trouble or messing something up. Steinbeck wanted to show the reader how African Americans were treated back then by putting Crooks into the mix. Steinbeck wants the reader to understand that Crooks was left out of activities and other things in the book because of his race and because of his crooked back.
chance I get I’ll give you a pup” (p14) then he gets George to re tell
Lennie and George are best friends but they don't have any ordinary relationship. In their relationship George is like the boss while Lennie is the subordinate. George is very bossy towards Lennie. He is always telling Lennie what to do. Lennie doesn't ever really have a say on what they do. Like when they reach the ranch, George tells Lennie not to speak to anyone at the ranch because he is scared that Lennie might say something wrong, but George only does that because he is very worried and protective of
George Milton is a short man with a dark of a face with restless eyes
At the beginning of the play Romeo is displayed as a self-pitying person. He much rather looses himself in sorrow than forgetting what has happened and going out to search for another girl who will return his love. He goes to Capulet’s feast only to see Rosaline. Juliet at the same time is also not very mature. She is very much dependant on the Nurse and Lady Capulet, who still try to comfort her in the best possible way.
“Of Mice and Men”, by John Steinbeck is a novel about the hardships of life and the importance of having other people around. The story is of two men trying to survive with one another in a world full of loneliness; their relationship is quite rare and strange. Lennie, a large bear, has a mental disability which causes him to be in a childlike state. George, a much smaller and more competent man takes care of both of them. Although they work for others on ranches, their dream is to get by on their own and live off the land. However, Lennie’s state causes conflict as they travel from job to job. Steinbeck uses clever ways in his novel to develop his theme and characters as the story progresses; both of these elements also help create a large
Print. The. While George, one of the book’s protagonists, is constantly trying to stay within that “perfect balance” in terms of taking care of his friend Lennie. It was these acts of selfishness and impulse that ultimately led to both his, and Juliet’s, demise.
The famed nurses study from Harvard found “Not having a close friend is as detrimental to your health as smoking.” Lennie and George’s friendship is necessary to keep the better for each other. Throughout the story, Lennie and George need each other and look out for one another no matter what. Lennie and George’s friendship and journey throughout the story symbolizes the struggles to achieve the American dream. Steinbeck, in the story Of Mice and Men, combines characterization and symbolism to prove friends do whats best for eachother.
In this selection, readers get a first look at the main characters of the story. Immediately we can tell that the men are not equal, because Lennie is walking behind George. On the other hand, they're dressed identically. This makes the reader question whether the relationship is one of equality, or if their inequality was the reason for the relationship in the first place. This seems like a relatable event that could happen in the readers’ life, so the response to this quote is great. The inequality in the friendship comes back later in the novel, when Lennie’s mental handicap begins to come through. This forces George to be less of a friend and more of a parent, role model, and idol all wrapped up. However, Lennie may not be able to look out for George, but he does what he can for his friend. This fact alone will prove that Lennie sees the friendship as equal, even when nobody else does. When they are alone, George shows Lennie respect like any good friend. Through everything, no matter how unequal the two might seem, Steinbeck seems to be saying that the loneliness is even worse than the poverty and hardship: like Lennie and George, you can get through more in your life with a close friend that cares about you as much as you care about them.
