Completed in 1808, Beethoven’s 5th Symphony 1st movement could arguably be considered his most popular and well known works of art. The impact of this powerful symphony has left distinct emotional reactions upon the listener for many centuries. Beethoven utilizes rhythmic energy in connection with a passionate contrast of vibrant melodies to produce a phenomenal masterpiece. After many years of musical instruction, I have heard this piece multiple times and have become very familiar with it, especially the first four opening notes. Because of the simplicity in the music that Beethoven wrote during his time, the common people of that day could easily understand the emotions that the music was trying to convey. The symphony opens with the first theme of the exposition without an introduction and consequently jumps in with its famous four-note motive. Three short notes on the same pitch descend slightly to a longer note making this rhythm the most important characteristic throughout his musical work. Beethoven credits the first four notes as a representation of “fate knocking at the door.”(1) The opening of the first theme in the exposition introduce the famous four notes that are played once, and then repeated multiple times symbolizing its importance. This is comparable to a mother who repeats important instructions to her children in hopes that they will remember what she has said. A conversation develops between the woodwinds and the strings and as a result, the instruments talk back and forth one with another using several notes, which in turn dwindles down to two notes, then to one note, all the time making a decrescendo as the music descends to the sound of a whisper, almost as if a secret is being told. This is also known as, thematic degradation or a change in the theme. As a result, Beethoven brings us back to the same type of excitement found with the four note motive as if to say, ”Remember these?” Recapitulation is traditionally a repetition of the exposition with a slight variance in the harmony however, during the recapitulation, the symphony seems to come to a halt when an oboe soloist plays a small cadenza, after which, the strings pick up the theme and crescendo until the horns play their fanfare. A coda is used in music to bring about the end of a movement, but here Beethoven builds a new theme as it is playfully played between the woodwinds and the strings leading up to a climax. The first movement felt as though it was the beginning of a riddle sure to be solved later in the symphony. It began with a sense of suspense with all basic elements of music: tonality, melody, and rhythm. The entire first movement was of an established sonata, between all instruments. However, what caught my attention was the mumble of the low strings which erupted into violins. I was on the edge of my seat for what was to come.

This piece beautifully evoked the mood of what I imagined as Beethoven’s dilemma of “fate knocking at the door.” Everything in this composition is built around the four opening notes. The tempo allegro was brisk and lively. The exposition set the tone with string instruments followed by the entire orchestra repeating in a march-like character. The bridge was similar in mood to the opening and was announced by horns. The recapitulation led to a long coda that punctuated the ending which built to an exciting climax accentuated by a dynamic fortissimo resolution to the frenzied tension. In this work, the analysis focuses on the first movement so as to show how Beethoven enriched symphony. The first movement has a distinctive sonority and texture. It is considerably long as it takes about 14 minutes (it may depend on the version). Some complete symphonies from the classical period are about the same length as this first movement, so Beethoven's work set aside from the traditional symphony. It tells other composers that there is no such thing as a standard length of symphony's movement. In order to understand the first movement, one needs to consider the historical framework. Section 3 is more merry and cheerful with the violins leading what feels like a race to be won. As they slow slightly we are soon dragged back to full speed and the race is on again. The violins and cello play off of each other as if in composition to see who will win the race. The bass brings in a dramatic flair as if building the suspense for the final climax of the music. The music slows to the point where you feel you have reached the end, but soon you are back on the journey again racing with the violins and lower instruments toward the finish line and the conclusion leaves the listener breathless.
As the opening credits scroll on the screen, the violins in the orchestra play an anticipatory mood. Almost like a chase is occurring. This music sets the scene for the rest of the movie and the horror that will ensue. The same melody is continued into the first scene just at a slower speed. The Beethoven Symphony #9 in D minor is being announced during the 4th movement of the symphony. Typically, in symphonies, the 4th movements take part in the term of Allegro, which means it is played quickly or fast. However, in Beethoven Symphony, the 4th movement opens with a flurry sound and then is introduced by an instrumental recitative. A recitative is a style of music alternating between speaking and singing words on the same note. In a recitative, the music lines are not repeated even though formally composed songs do.
The same line is repeated ecstatically by the quartet, which soars upward to it’s peak. The orchestra and chorus re-enter at a rapid tempo to bring the movement to its conclusion.
In Beethoven’s early quartets, he takes great inspiration from both Mozart and his tutor, Joseph Haydn. Before Beethoven wrote his first quartet he had already written several different compositions for he wanted to really establish his own style of writing first. Op. 18, No. 1 in F, was first written in 1799 but still remains close to the Haydnesque and Mozartian quartet writing style, but the young Beethoven begins to place in his own ideas. This can be seen in the very first movement (see example 1).

This is a typical characteristic of the Classical Period which obsessed over clarity of structure. Similarly, Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 1 in F minor Op. 2, No.1 is clearly divided into an exposition, development and recapitulation. Its lucid exposition of melodic material occurs in balanced melodic phrases. Both of these works contain short codas to each section. Symphony No. 6 is one of Beethoven's few programmatic works and describes a county scene. It is titled "Recollections of country life". It has 5 movements, unusual for a classical symphony. The first movement is in sonata form and is titled "Awakening of cheerful feelings upon arrival in the country". It has two beautiful rustic themes. The second movement is titled "Scene at the brook" and depicts a bubbling stream on a calm day. It is also in sonata form with two flowing themes. The third movement is a scherzo and depicts a country dance being titled "Happy gathering of country folk". It is an unusual scherzo with the scherzo section played only once before continuing to the trio. After the trio, instead of returning to the scherzo, a short section in 2/4 time interrupts. Then the scherzo is played followed by the trio again. The 2/4 section appears a second time, followed by the scherzo one last time. The dancing in the third movement is interrupted by raindrops ushering in the fourth movement, titled "Thunderstorm".
Beethoven slowly began showing his emotions, and feelings, but very subtly. His work began to have a very sublime feeling to it, very deep and not knowing what to expect. It was after those first two that Beethoven had a big life crisis. (Sayre 407) He then began seeing life as a shorter journey than previously sought, and stopped caring about what consequences would arise from what he wanted to do. Which was to show strong emotion in his music. It was his escape from his impending doom, which was becoming deaf. He released music very quickly over the next decade. Music Appreciation has broadened my view to listen to different eras of music that I was not accustomed to. It was pleasant listening, reading, and learning about different periods of music. This course has given me an exceptional amount of knowledge on different styles of music, identifying different elements in music as well as learning about legendary composers who have influenced music throughout history. Not only has music been around for decades, it has developed a history of great composers who have left an imprint in history by their extraordinary compositions of music they developed during their times of glory, like Ludwig van Beethoven. In this essay I will discuss how Beethoven is known as one of the greatest, ingenuity composers of his time and how the classical period is so fascinating to listen to and learn about. In addition, I will also discuss how Music Appreciation has reshaped the way I perceive and listen to different styles of music that have been created throughout history.
