Rhetoric is the knack of persuasion: rhetoric is established on the belief that argumentation targets at gaining the loyalty of audience, argumentation is analogous to the audience to be persuaded. The book, ‘The Realm of Rhetoric’ by Chaim Perelman, in entirety is a cosmos of argumentative discourse. Rhetoric and philosophy of argumentation form the principle theme of Perelman’s thought, is an extension of Aristotle’s rhetoric.
With regard to the audience, Perelman adheres to the dual concepts of specific audience and a universal audience; admitting that every argument is aimed to a definite individual or a group, the speaker has to decide, which message and data will gain loyalty of an ideal audience. Understanding the importance of audience to rhetoric, it is crucial to evaluate the role of audience in terms of writing. According to Ong, a speaker’s audience is different from writer’s audience. In reality, he opines that the term ‘audience’ is improper with reference to reading and writing. In Ong’s view ‘audience’ signifies a collective unit, whereas readers are not, since reading is an individualistic function. The printed information is processed at their own speed, time and interpreted differently by the readers. Whereas a speaker has the privilege to observe the audience, hence provides context to the situation. Here, Ong believes that words gain significance through context. The writer is faced with the challenge to fictionalize the audience. According to Ong, every type of audience can be fictionalized to a degree, including a speaker’s audience. He goes on explaining how letters and diaries demonstrate that all audiences are to some extent fictionalized. Ong concludes by drawing the example that in reality regardless of the relationships everyone wears a mask. Masks are very common and accepted in the reader/writer relationship, consequently the obligation for writers to fictionalize a role for readers, and for readers to acknowledge that role chosen by the

In 102 Minutes, Chapter 7, authors Dwyer and Flynn use ethos, logos, and pathos to appeal to the readers’ consciences, minds and hearts regarding what happened to the people inside the Twin Towers on 9/11. Of particular interest are the following uses of the three appeals.
Heinrichs begins by explaining the art of rhetoric and laying out the basic tools of argument. He emphasizes the importance of using the proper tense to avoid arguing the wrong issue. Furthermore, he introduces logos, ethos and pathos and shows how to “wield” each rhetorical tool. In Part 2, Heinrichs discusses common logical fallacies as well as rhetorical fouls. In the story, What is Rhetoric by William Covino and David Jolliffe, there are a wide variety of topics discussed that are inextricably interwoven with the concept “rhetoric.” Rhetoric, as defined by the authors, is “the study and practice of shaping content.” Consequently, my first thought was: Ok, this is a rather broad and opaque description; my successive thought, however, was one of astonishment, inasmuch as the authors went on to further elucidated this jargon. In doing so, the authors distilled the most crucial elements of what is rhetoric— the prevalence of discourse community, and how appealing language is often a precursor to persuasion.
Rhetoric is the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, and its uses the figures of speech and other compositional techniques. It’s designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect on its audience.
The author’s main argument in “Rhetoric: Making Sense of Human Interaction and Meaning-Making” is that rhetoric does not need to be complicated if writers incorporate certain elements to their writing. Downs further analyzed the elements that contribute to rhetoric such as symbols and signals, motivation, emotion, ecology, reasoning and identification. The author emphasized that writers can learn how to deliver their writing effectively once they are more aware on how rhetoric works. Downs constantly assures that rhetoric is quite simple and does not need to provoke fuzziness. Even though the term rhetorical is applied to everything, the author of the article made it clear that the “rhetorical” thing is situated. In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
Naylor’s audience is the committee and members of the audience, including his young son. Naylor is defending a controversial idea with controversial evidence and support, whether it goes against what he believes or not. Naylor’s own morality is called into question. Logos, pathos, Kairos, and ethos, the mainstays of rhetoric, can all be found throughout Naylor’s defense. Rhetorical fallacies can also be found throughout the sequence.
Rhetorical appeals apply to everyday life and the three sections of the rhetoric’s cover all elements of persuasion. Moore and Machiavelli do an outstanding job of explaining their points and why you should believe what they are saying. Both author’s did a great job of educating and informing their viewers although they were two significantly different pieces. Moore and Machiavelli’s work are each their own with respect to purpose and lessons but they also both come together in regards to using Aristotle’s three rhetorical appeals.
Rhetoric is the art of persuasion, in which there are three forms. Ethos the credibility of the author, Pathos the emotion you create, and logos the logical side of an argument. Many articles and papers use these terms of persuasion to see their side one such document is The Declaration of Independence. The purpose for said document was for the 13 original colonies to declare freedom from the oppressive rule of England.
