The Real Slim Shady
While you are cruising down the road with your parents, Marshall Mathers is not someone you all would sing along too. Mathers is a caucasian boy who grew up on the wrong side of 8 mile in Detroit. He had a many different stage names: Marshall Mathers, Eminem, and Slim Shady. All of these helped to develop his loose cannon persona. Slim Shady was developed through his rude lyrics, relationships with family, and clothing.
The lyrics to Eminem’s songs are often more than just the next catchy tune, they often tell a story. Most of the time this story is dark and scary, giving insight of the struggles going on in such a peculiar man’s life. For example, in his song “The Way I Am” he sings, “I'm some wigger who just tries to be black because I talk with an accent and grab on my balls, so they always keep asking the same f***ing questions.” It is very noticeable that this is more than just a happy, feel good song. The lyrics are meaningful and speak to people who have gone through similar struggles. Eminem’s lyrics also contain many drug references showing why he is such a loose cannon. In his song “Purple Pills” he sings, “I take a couple uppers. I down a couple downers, but nothing compares to these blue and yellow purple pills. I been to mushroom mountain. Once or twice, but who's countin'. But nothing compares to these blue and yellow purple pills.” This shows that not only does he do drugs, but he has a preference and has done them on multiple occasions.
Eminem also pulls of this loose cannon persona through poor relationships with family. He gives the impression that he truly hates his ex-wife (Kim) and his mother. It is quite apparent that he hates his ex-wife in the song “Kim”, when he sings, “Oh, what's ...

...ferent personalities. All of them were different, and all of them didn’t care what anyone thought of him. This loose cannon persona was demonstrated through his lyrics, relationships with family, and his choice of clothing. Eminem will always be the first caucasian rap star and the first to say things that most only keep to themselves.

While Eminem portrays himself as being from Detroit, he is actually from Missouri. He moved back and forth between Detroit, Michigan and Kansas City, Missouri for most of his childhood. At the age of seventeen, Eminem started getting serious about wanting to be a rapper, giving himself the nickname M&M (meaning Marshal Mathers) and later decided to change the spelling to Eminem with the second E backwards as part of his trademark. He failed 9th grade 3 times, then dropped out, “School wasn’t for me” (Eminem). An education was the last thing on his mind. After throwing himself into the rap world on many levels, usually being shut down, he kept trying.
When listening to rap music we get to experience the environments that the MC lived through. Most MC’s use music as a way of coping with reality, their violent and hard life. In this way they find a kind of shelter in their songs even though these songs describe their life and how hard it is.
Eminem, born as Marshall Mathers, has proven that with a lot of desire, drive and dedication, anybody can accomplish even their greatest of goals. Eminem was raised in the ghettos of East Detroit. He was bullied and victimized by other students in school. He worked to achieve his goal, against the odds. As a result, what he has become is one of America's most popular and successful music artists.
Raised as an only child, Dwayne Micheal Carter Jr or more commonly referred to as Lil Wayne, was born September 27th, 1982, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Carter’s mother was only 19 years old when he was first born. He was being raised by both his mother and father until his father abandoned them while Dwayne Jr. was only two years old. After being abandoned by his biological father, his mother was forced to take care of him on her own and survive in the crime infested community of Holly grove, New Orleans. Even though he divorced his mother and remarried, his father forced the two live with his own mother and came by to abuse Lil Wayne’s mother on a consistent basis. This situation went on for three years until Lil Wayne’s mother eventually remarried and relocated to a different part of town. Growing up he did very well in school. He was actually enrolled in his school’s gifted program at a point and received top grades. He got into music at a very young age and wrote his first rap song at the age of eight. Lil Wayne had the drive to be the best and successful at his craft since he first began. At the age of nine he was challenging others twice his age and older at rapping. He would consistently go to neighborhood parties or events to rap and most of the time he was better then whatever adult he was going against. As a testament to this, at the age of nine he start receiving attention from one of the two co-founders of his future label, Slim Williams. From Slim, he then received other co-founder, Bryan Williams, phone number and what he did with it after that was truly caught the Bryan’s attention. He continuously called the number over and over leaving rap songs on the voicemail of Williams until he agreed to meet him in person...
“Kanye Ran onto the stage saying, ‘I'm sorry, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!’” (Top 10 Outrageous Kanye West Moments), says Kanye West at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards after Taylor Swift had just won “Best Female Video.” People that are like this have typically not always been this way. They were probably raised as a polite and respectful person before they were exposed to fame and fortune, and other “celebrities,” making them feel like they are the only people on the planet. Causing them to do things like that. Although, Kanye West is an amazing musician based on his 14 Grammy Awards and multiple albums going “Double-Platinum” (Manheim, James M., and Carol Brennan). He fell victim to fame and fortune, and turned into an arrogant and overconfident person making him more popular and praised among media. But looked down upon by everyday people. Kanye Omari West, born on June 8th, 1977, is a world famous rapper who, like all other celebrities, started out like a nice person who made nice music for nice families to listen to. West was a confident and competitive person even as a child, “He was determined even then to get out of his crib and be free, even if he split his head in the process—and he did. He has fought ever since to do exactly what he wanted to do—no matter what,” says Donda West, his mother in her book, Raising Kanye: Life Lessons from the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar. By the time West was ten, he was already creating his own raps, and according to the people around him, he was pretty good at it even at that young of an age. (Manheim, James M., and Carol Brennan) West was not too interested in school as he grew up, but he was able to get by because of his talent. If he dropped out of one ...
Born quietly into poverty on September 27, 1982 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Lil Wayne entered this world with the given name of Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr. to his 19 year old mother, Jacita Carter. He was named after his father, Dwayne Michael Turner; however Turner was never part of the child’s life. Jacita began raising her son in Hollygrove, one of the poorest neighborhoods in New Orleans. She later became involved with Reginald “Rabbit” McDonald and he became her son’s stepfather. Rabbit moved the family to East New Orleans. Dwayne was a smart kid and had straight A’s in school. He liked rhyming and wrote his first rap ...
Songs are one way of expressing feelings and emotion, many artist do this constantly in their music. To some it is why they make music. There are endless signs and verses that hint at many things such as problems, politics, living in racist era’s also places. I chose to focus on one main rapper and his music only. I chose to examine, review, and study a few of his songs. Kid cudi grew up in cleveland, Ohio. His father passed away when he was a young age which affected the kid ever since. He writes about living his life and having to go through many obstacles
Unlike those previously mentioned, Eminem took a different approach which was to become the bully. This is Eminem’s downfall because he let the actions bullies would do to him turn him into to them. Rather than being a better person and telling an adult, he took a different approach a got pay back by attacking the bully. MORE. CONCLUSION SENTENCE.
“Lose Yourself” is one of the most famous and prominent songs of Eminem’s whole career. This song is meant to pump someone up when they are feeling down and out and to tell them to seize every opportunity that comes their way because it might me the last one. This song is the main track that relates to Marshall Mathers’ semi-biographical movie 8 Mile as this portrays his story of his entry into the rap game.
All his life he was raised by his mom, with his sister. He always led a
This paper analyzes Eminem’s, “When I’m Gone”, a song whose central theme is premised on the love for family and is evident on his conversation with his daughter, Hailie. I chose this song because of the interesting conversation that brings to the fore the deep emotional ties between the Eminem and Haile. Eminem’s passion for music seems to have taken precedence over the love for his family. Hailie endures so much heartache and misses her father every time he leaves home for a global fame and success through music. Eminem loves the daughter who he says he can give an arm for but can’t stop his music career because it is his passion and
On October 17, 1972, Eminem, aka Marshall Bruce Mathers III or Bruce, was born in St. Joseph, Missouri. Debbie Nelson was only 17 years old when she had Bruce, and almost died during labor. As an infant, Bruce's father left both him and his mother and moved California.
...nd doesn?t necessarily reflect the artist. Eminem has never raped anyone or killed anyone, but when he raps about it, it is just the way he feels at the moment sometimes but never engages in the action.
Mathers was born in Kansas City and traveled back and forth between Kansas City and the Detroit metropolitan area. He switching schools every two to three months made it difficult to make friends and stay out of trouble. Music and rap seemed to be a way out for Mathers. He was able to beat other kids in freestyle singing contests and brought joy to his painful existence. (Eminem.com 2) In Mathers poem, Life, he writes about life being one big obstacle put in front of you in order to slow you down, and whenever you think you are past it, it always comes back to get you.
Eminem had a miserable childhood which he learned to thrive in and succeed to what he has become now. Marshall was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on October 17, 1972. He was the child of Bruce Mathers, Jr. and Deborah Nelson. Soon after Marshall’s birth his father left to California. His mother struggled to maintain a household, for which the result was frequent movement from Michigan and Missouri. The family then settled in Warren, Michigan in an African American middle-class neighborhood. The family was the only Caucasian tenants through the region. Marshall was a tall, scrawny, and white male that stood out amongst his peers, of African Americans, and was constantly bullied for his color. In addition his mother was an abusive drug addict who took prescription pills. Eminem then inclined to the interest of hip-hop listening to his first rap song at nine—"Reckless" featuring Ice-T. Later in his life he suffered family loss, like his Uncle Ronnie who committed suicide. Mathers became mute and antisocial for weeks. In high school he dropped out for repeating ninth-grade for his third time, for poor grades, and pursued lyrical writing. Marshall then joined rap groups and freestyles gaining success in the predominantly black industry. He then adapted to the name “M&M” as his rapper name, which later evolved to “Eminem”. Eminem’s adversities affected many of his works throughout his life and career. After his album Infiniti, Eminem was signed into Aftermath Records by Dr. Dre and started to produce albums of masterpiece.
