The Pursuit of Happyness is directed by Gabriele Muccino, starring actor Will Smith and son, Jaden Smith; a tale that is inspired by successful stockbroker, Christopher Gardner. In this movie, Chris Gardner is a salesman and a single father who struggled through life with his five year old son. Chris often finds himself broke and nowhere to go since they have been forced to leave their apartment due to late rent payment. He was struggling to make ends meet and winds up spending nights at shelter homes with his young son. He lost his entire life savings on an investment that eventually grew into a financial instability, which gave him a strong determination to turn his life around. In the long run, Chris finally earned a job as a broker in the …show more content…
His catch on the content of this story is that it is general and relatable to anyone who understands hardship. I personally feel that he achieved this because even though this movie is set in the States, I feel like I can relate to it as with the high-cost of living in Singapore, I realised that I do sometimes find myself or my family in tight financial conditions. This movie got me thinking twice about “money can’t buy happiness” when my biggest barrier was money. However, the message of this movie was clear; if you work hard, you will succeed. Muccino wanted to emphasize that persistence pays off. The mise en scene that I feel had the most impact on the film is the scene that’s set in the bathroom of the subway station. Gardner and his son were lying on sheets of toilet paper on the bathroom floor, with their belongings and luggage in the bathroom. Gardner was tearing up while his son was asleep in his arms. I think that this scene depicted utter desperation of how Chris handled the situation and how terrible their situation was. This scene was definitely a vital factor as the film progresses in Chris’ pursuit for …show more content…
The hairstyle and dull work suits of the extras, the telephone and TV in Chris’ apartment, the popularity and fascination of the Rubik’s Cube, the payphone and cars on the streets, and the part where Chris met a broker who owned a red Ferrari 308 convertible are some of the obvious bits to show this era. The soundtracks used in this movie are also really well-suited. Most of them are instrumentals which I think is simple but effective in expressing joy or sadness in contrast with the respective scenes in this movie. The music also helped in predicting the scenes; whether is it moving towards a positive or negative outcome, or for when Chris is running or the scene is in a fast pace, the soundtrack is fast too. Nonetheless, this movie taught me about endurance and that one can achieve their goals despite the challenges that they face in life. I learnt that as long as I set my mind to it and never give up, nothing can bring me down. While this movie is really meaningful and inspiring, the deepest message that I take away from it is family. It reminds me of how much my parents have gone through to provide to my needs. Similar to Gardner’s character, my parents don’t complain or give up on me. They endured our difficulties while convincing me that everything is
The mise en scene highlights the military background that the characters are in. All in all, this scene is a highly emotional scene, highlighting the mortal danger that confronts Dave and The Sapphires.
“I now walk into the wild” (3). It was April 1992 a young man from a rather wealthy family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness. His name was Christopher McCandless. He gave all of his savings to a charity, abandoned his car in the desert, left all his possessions, burned his money and wallet, and invented an alter ego all to shun society. Four months after his adventure, his decomposing body was found in bus 142 by a moose hunter. Into the Wild is a riveting novel about one man’s journey to find himself and live as an individual. Although, Chris McCandless may come as an ill-prepared idiot, his reasons for leaving society are rational. He wanted to leave the conformist society and blossom into his own person, he wanted to create his own story not have his story written for him, and he wanted to be happy not the world’s form of happiness.
There are many more examples throughout this movie that can be connected or assessed to the many different concepts that was learned. There are many real-life events and these concepts are important because they allow people to see how different types of people and families deal with stress and problems and it is important not to judge or jump to conclusions and maybe take a step back and take time to consider what others may be going
The movie teaches us to look beyond the cover and into who someone is as a person. We also learn that sometimes contact with people makes us reconsider our judgement towards them, to find out the real person underneath.
... class. This book was actually one of most interesting books I’ve read while I’ve been in college, and this course kept me interested the whole semester. The things it has taught me about the meaning of reading and evaluating other people and their personalities and who they really are. It actually came to mind a couple times, maybe I want to be a psychologist and help people with their problems. It just really amazes me how Perry’s dad can literally be the cause of four innocent lives gone. Throughout reading the book and watching both films, I began better at reading people and observing their personalities not only with the characters in the book but also outside the classroom and in the real world. The fact that everyone has a story and reasons they are the way they are. Perry had a story that no one knew about, and it has just taught me that everyone has one
There is a scene in this movie where the coach takes the team on a long run in the middle of the night. They end up at the break of dawn at a cemetery. The coach tells the young men of the battle that was fought on that ground. He told of the blood shed on those grounds that turned the whole area red. This can help many people that want to make a difference in this world. They had to stand up for their new knowledge to people that they love and trust.
...ng the underlying theme that drives the story and the movie, propels the reader and viewer to rekindle the desire to hope above all else because hope is all one has in devastating as well as dire needs. Hope overcomes despair, permits others to see your “inner light” to develop integrity which connects with honesty and trust. Hope is the inspiration to continue to live regardless of the circumstances. Red may have narrated; “Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.” But, Andy Dufresne states it best: “Get busy living, or get busy dying.”
Fortuitously, the movie has turned out to be one of the best motion pictures of the year. Once again, Clint Eastwood surprises us all with his work as a film director. He gives the audience a chance to consider life from another viewpoint. The movie makes one think about what he or she has achieved in life and Maggie shows us that it is never too late to have a dream fulfilled. After all, this is why we are actually born and live to fulfill our dreams.
Money is another big mis en scene prop. The whole movie is based around the theme of the rich and the poor. Money is the biggest focus in the movie and is used as a symbol of happiness or unhappiness. The millionaire has all this money, yet is living a lifeless life. Where as the poor flower girl, though she has no money, is living a happy life. The quote “money can’t buy you happiness” is the perfect example for this
... is the brutality of hate and racism. The emotions running high in the movie makes it powerful and moving and the death of Derek’s younger brother Danny Vinyard is shocking enough to bring tears to many viewers’ eyes. The movie ends with Danny’s voice reading his paper out loud and he ends his paper with a very important quote by Abraham Lincoln. This quote shows how Danny’s, as well as Derek’s, mindset changed from the beginning of the movie to the end. When hearing this quote it leaves the viewers in awe that Danny finally started to look past his hateful ideologies but ends up dead because of the lifestyle him and his brother decided to lead. “We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained we must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be by the better angels of our nature”.
Emotions. Everyone experiences them. No matter how old you are, or where you are from we all have emotions; however, we all experience them differently. My happiness is different than your happiness and what you find sad, I might see it as being angry. Emotions are powerful, and sometimes it feels at times that they take control of us. In our culture, there are lot of norms of what is supposed to be expected with our emotions. It is expected in the United States to be in a state of happiness. Going to the opposite side there has been a big rise in Depression, especially among young adults. For one it is normally expected that you feel one way or another way toward something. Emotions are hard to capture, even more so they are very difficult to put into picture. The film Inside Out, however, is able to break down emotion so that even younger kids can better understand them. Parallelism exists a lot between Inside Out and the American idea of how we are supposed to feel. The film, Inside Out, shares parallels to the United States, as it symbolizes the importance of feeling more than one emotion, it shows the effect of depression among the youth, and the sense to always feel happy.
There are different times of popular songs or music that can easily identify the era from the various aspects of the concert, melody, content, etc. With the capacity of rendering the atmosphere of the era, the background of the film
Since the movie came out in 2006, “ The Pursuit of Happyness” has been one of my favorite movies. A non-fiction movie based on a true story, of a man called Chris Gardner and his son Christopher Gardner Jr. Both these roles are played by the famous actors Will Smith, and his real life son Jaden Smith. In this very inspirational movie, directed by Gabriele Muccino, Will smith plays out Chris Gardner when he was struggling to start as a stockbroker while being a father in need of money. This movie takes place at San Francisco in 1981, and has always meant a great deal to me. Inspiring me to always work my hardest in order to be successful in life. On this movie that is the message it holds, to inspire people to dream big, and to not let anyone

Not only does this movie deal with the issues of society, but it points to biblical scriptures that help lead us in the right direction. The biggest lesson that this film taught me was that if I put my complete faith in God, then no matter what happens, he will provide, watch over, and take care of me. I learned that expressing belief in God is not enough. I have to live everyday believing and trusting him and I have to show my trust and faith through my actions and my words.
