Rihanna aspires to find her sense of self and work on her unstable relationship, but as the clinician, I serve as the outlet that helps the client tolerate the things that are intolerable in themselves. The ways in which a clinician can tolerate the intolerable tragedies of their clients and the clinician’s own personal anxieties is through hope. Hope is important to the human mind because it helps to alleviate one’s fear. As Shechter explains in the article The Psychodynamics of a clinician’s hope: A delicate balance, hope gives the clinician courage to continue their daily labors. Hope serves as something that helps a social worker idealist their practice expectations of what can be done and what we hope to do even if it is not realistic.
The strengths-based and recovery models, used often by social workers, hope to prioritize individual 's strengths in order to best assist them on their road of recovery. The recovery model uses empowerment to help their clients make the best decisions for their lives. Allowing the clients to remain autonomous and have the agency to make their own decisions provides fruitful results as well as the maintenance of their recovery. Allowing clients to be in control, as much as possible, of their decisions and recovery paths helps the clients to understand what choices they should make for their life. When a client makes a decision that is not advisable, there are two paths of action. First, the practitioner could go over both the positive and negative implications that that choice would have immediately and in the future. Second, if harm could come to any individual, then the practitioner would have to force the individual to make a different decision or report the behavior. While forceful decisions are not the most productive, a practitioner can not allow harm to happen to any individual. Mental health professionals cannot allow their clients to do harm to themselves or others because of their code of ethics (“NASW snapshot…”,

Weick (1992) states “every person has an inherent power that may be characterized as life force, transformational capacity, life energy, spirituality, regenerative potential, and healing power, which is a potent form of knowledge that can guide personal and social transformation” (p. 24). No matter the crisis or oppression, it needs to be brought to client’s realization that they are strong, resilient and can overcome. They may not be aware of this inner power due to the constant stress and overwhelming sense of impending doom in their lives, but with the help of the strengths perspective, we can assist clients in realizing that they have strengths as well as weaknesses. Clients want to know that they can rely on social workers to provide adequate resources and respect their current situation, no matter how difficult it may be. Clients want to know that we can empathize with their situation and provide support, care and concern for the issues they are going through; they need to know that we will help them achieve their goals and not give up on them as many may have before in their lives. Saleeby (2013) states “your cli...
Since, it is Lee’s first time being involved in an area of treatment, the provider will use encouragement and meeting Lee where she is currently, to assist in understanding the treatment approach, as well as her role in therapy. Lee will be empowered to fully invest in treatment, although this is a voluntary service. Lee will be encouraged to explore her past experiences, while focusing on how these experiences may have shaped her self-perception and worldview. The provider will assist Lee with coming to a new understanding of herself and the world around her without establishing a clinical diagnosis or confining
Carl R. Rogers theorized that through providing a certain kind of relationship with the client, one in which empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence were present, the client would “discover within himself the capacity to the relationship for growth, and change and personal development” . As a counselor empathy is essential as it allows me to enter my clients internal frame of reference, while still retaining a problem-solving stance. Entering the client’s internal frame of reference means I must consider the emotions and thoughts of the client, it is similarly vital not to get lost in the internal frame of reference as this creates the distinction between sympathy and empathy. Unconditional positive regard, also called acceptance is essential as it plays a role in creating a helping relationship in which the client feels safe to express any negative emotions or thoughts, while being...
The counselor accomplishes the above by expressing empathy, developing discrepancies, going along with resistance and supporting self-efficacy. Moreover, the counselor guides the client toward a solution that will lead to permanent posi...
In today’s world, celebrities are often misunderstood, especially singer/songwriter Robin Rihanna Fenty, referred to as Rihanna. Rihanna’s sexual behaviors in her videos have been talked about in negative ways for some time now, but what [eople do not understand is that it is all for fame. Celebrities will do anything to keep their career going strong. If one really took the time out to take a deep look at Rihanna, they will notice how humble she really is. After going through the abusive relationship with Chris Brown, Rihanna has struggled with gaining that strong confidence with who she is. Her critics believe that she is still trying to discover herself and figure out who she really is as a person. Rihanna is often given two choices, to do what she is being asked to do, or throw her career out the window. She either gives the crowd the sexual acts they want or let her career die down. In the song “S&M,” Rihanna was really exposing herself to the crowd, as well as “Good Girl, Gone Bad.” She is basically telling the crowd that this is the person she is, but is it really? For my original piece I will be creating a journal, expressing the feelings Rihanna felt as she overcomes her struggles. Rihanna’s sexual behaviors in her videos are really all for fame and therefore, are easily misunderstood.
Choosing a career is a very important aspect to people’s lives. One goes to college, usually around the age of eighteen, and by the time they leave they are expected to have decided on the career that they will have for the rest of their lives. Being a psychology and interpersonal communication major, I have always had an interest on relationships between individuals given certain stimuli presented to them. I want to have the ability to touch people’s lives by helping them understand themselves and why they behave the way in which they behave. Relationships are such an important aspect to the process of human growth, and they impact each and every one of us. Due to this assessment of myself, I have decided to go to college to pursue my goals of being a clinical social worker.
...velop plans and goals that they can put into action. I further believe warmth and empathy should be used in building relationships between clients. The therapist should create a setting in which clients feel safe and can be vulnerable and spontaneous. As I stated before when discussing goals, it is the role of the therapist to cultivate optimism and hope. According to Gehart (2010), hope should be instilled early on in therapy to foster motivation and a sense of momentum (p. 337). I agree with this statement because more than likely the client is in therapy to make some kind of change, to make an improvement. If hope is instilled early in treatment, clients are able to feel empowered and strengthened by their therapist’s encouraging attitude. Overall, a therapist should be a facilitator, a resource person, an observer and a model for effective communication.
Don’t you get that badass vibe whenever Rihanna is dancing in her music videos and singing those despicable lines? Yes, everyone does! With an unprecedented musical success, she’s one the most influencing pop stars the world has seen since the 2000s.

This wisdom applies to consumers’ difficult situations as well as my own journey to the social work profession. When I was a sophomore in high school, my teacher gave me the task to research and write about what I wanted to do “when I grew up.” I instantly thought of my dream of becoming a labor and delivery nurse because I find joy in caring for others and welcoming new life into this world. This assignment required me to investigate what
According to Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi, helping clients develop unused opportunities and potential is positive psychology. Clients need to know that there are other opportunities for a better occupation, health, and home life. Treatment is not just fixing what is broken but helping the client start or redesign their life goals (Ince, 2009 pg.7) Helping the client find out their strengths and how to use them is positive behavior that all professional helpers need to help clients learn to use. Professional helpers have tools to help clients set these goals.
Social Work is a profession that prides itself on the ability to cultivate positive relationships with people who may be very different from us. There may be differences in age, race, personality, gender, socioeconomic status, health, sexual orientation, rank, power, and privilege, as well as beliefs regarding religion and politics. The experience of these differences can cause a Social Worker to feel emotionally and cognitively disturbed. The ability to become aware of and consciously attend to these internal disturbances can positively affect the quality of relationship we are able to
Becoming a Mental Health Counselor for a patient with HIV/Aids is a position of dignity that can be often skewed or unwarranted due to the negative realm our society has placed upon the diagnosis. The main function of the HIV/Aids counselor is to be supportive of his or her infected and affected clients, to listen to their problems and to empower them to solve their problems and better their lives. These abilities can come easy for some; harder for others. I, as an HIV/Aids counselor, will embrace my future clients that seek my services. Support and empowerment should be an underlying task for any counseling profession, but particularly when working with a client who has HIV/Aids.
