The coronary care unit (CCU) has an opportunity for improvement related to safe communication. According to a literature review by Kear (2016) that were several medical errors that resulted from communication failures. Some of the research reported a high prevalence of medical errors associated with less than adequate communication during the critical time of transition or handoff of care between providers (Kear, 2016). In addition to assuring safe, quality communication, the organization 's mission, vision, and values reiterate the value of employee qualities that are grounded in working together, excellence, customer service, accountability, respect, and enthusiasm (Covenant Healthcare, 2016). Provisions three and six of the Code of Ethics
Provision three of the Code of Ethics for Nursing confirms that nurses should be involved in activities that protect the safety and rights of patients (American Nurses Association, 2010). By validating a safe handoff has occurred, nurses are protecting the patients in their care and making every effort possible to minimize mistakes and redundancies in care during the transition. Provision six of the Code of Ethics for Nursing reiterates the obligation of nurses to advocate for safe environments (American Nurses Association, 2010). Without safe handoff communication, transitional mistakes can occur that could potentially lead to patient harm. Therefore, by supporting efforts to implement positive change related to safe communication, nurses are aligning themselves with their nursing professional
Channels such as evidence-based committees would need to be involved in this change for validation, acceptance, and policy development. Unexpected needs may arise during the process. However, the team can work together to troubleshoot these emerging needs. The team should consist of ER and CCU staff to offer the benefit of diverse expertise. Initially, these differences may create opposite philosophies; although, the end-product will need to be the outcome of a collaboration between these two groups. As a result, the recognition of these contributions offers validation that CAS theory was the appropriate framework to apply to this task.
Alignment
Moving forward with macro-like ideas and promise, the team will need to recruit support. This intervention can be supported by offering insight on how this project will demonstrate the organizational and professional goals and values. Leadership would become engaged once they can recognize the contributions to safe, quality care. According to CAS Theory, "successful change fits with the current organizational environment" rather than an idea (Marquis & Huston, 2015, p. 173). This organizational connection can help the nurses process a new way of handling communication that will become a routine practice.
