All the big technology and smartphone players have joined in the race for developing VR sets as the competition begins to increase among various manufacturers. The biggest names out there are Oculus Rift and HTC Vive and even though these have a high price tag due to their outstanding functionalities, there are other entry level options you can opt for.
In order to get the feel of what Virtual Reality is, you can go for the Samsung Gear VR, which only costs an average of around $99 and can be used with their flagship Galaxy smartphones.

Because of immersive world VR is able to provide, it is being used more widely for social interactions. Imagine never having to leave your room but still be able to meet new people. With the internet readily available throughout the world, this virtual bonding is now a possibility as more and more people are creating their virtual selves and living virtual lives.

People put all their attention and time into their virtual worlds which leads to missing important connections with others. The text also says that “Research shows that virtual-world friends provide mostly bridging social capital,while real-world friends provide bonding social capital.” On social media people are only surface-level friends with others; they are not true friends. However, when someone makes a real-world connection with someone else, they get to experience bonding on a deeper level. Maintaining deeper friendships can help you have close connections with others later in life.
Virtual reality can be used as an educational tool to assist not only students but teachers as well. Another major benefit of virtual reality is its use in the healthcare field. It can be used to treat several medical conditions such as anxiety disorders, mental health issues such as phobias, and it can even be used as a pain reliever (Matheison, 2017).
Supports of virtual reality say that it will bring people around the world closer together and change the nature of communication. While others believe it will be used by people to avoid real-life troubles and they will withdraw into the online world. (Anon., n.d.)
So now that we have gone through the history, let’s talk about what’s been going on with virtual reality today. What’s it currently being used for. Well like in the past it is still mostly used for entertainment and training purposes. For example when it comes to entertainment we already talked about “Google cardboard”. With the Google cardboard you can kind of go on a virtual tour of different places around the world. Another example of entertainment would be Sony’s Playstation VR which we also talked about earlier.
Definition of virtual reality is "A technology that assures participants that he was actually in another place by replacing the main sensory input with data received by the computer" [6] [10]. The term Virtual Reality (VR) is used by many different people with many meanings. There are some people to whom VR is a specific collection of technologies, that is a Head Mounted Display, Glove Input Device and Audio. Some other people stretch the term to include conventional books, movies or pure fantasy and imagination. However, for purposes of this research, we restrict VR to computer mediated systems. We would define Virtual Reality as a way for humans to visualize, manipulate and interact with computers and extremely complex data.

In the video game community, a player is assumed to have a neutral identity. Even though social interactions are present in MMORPG's, these interactions are not about the individual's traits, emotions, memories, or other personal characteristics; it is all about the game and the environment that surrounds it.

In science fiction films there were numerous scenes about person wearing goggles and then looking into a different world or a portal.
