Introduction Good morning corporate America. ‘Ruin porn’ has been an ongoing debate over whether it’s a good or a bad thing. Some journalist will state that “ruin porn ignores and overwrites the voices of those who still call Detroit home” (Doucet and Philp) worrying about the people who live in these conditions that don’t receive the help they need. On the other side of the coin, journalist such as Piiparinen say “it will exist regardless if its documentation is shamed to a halt”. However, although some journalists only argue against it, I personally believe that ruin porn can be good and can be used to restore the city. My first reason ruin porn is good is because it can be used to financially assist the city. If you can’t stop it, use it. …show more content…
This is so we as a nation can learn from the past and the mistake it made to end up as it is in the picture, we cannot progress forward without knowing what not to do, what works and what doesn’t work. Furthermore, this is what defines the U.S. It may not be as big as the signing of the Declaration of Independence, but it is just as important as any other historical event. without it, we are just another country without purpose. Furthermore, in George Orwell’s book, 1984, the idea of deleting history is presented so the party may shape the society how they see fit. "Who controls the past; controls the future: who controls the present controls the past." states the party as their slogan. Orwell seems to tinker with the idea of history defining who we are and by taking it away, we are nothing. History is an important part of nation that need to be preserved and shared though pornographic ruin …show more content…
People such as Doucet and Philp make the argument that ruin porn ignores the voices of people who live in Detroit and that it “obscure[s] the humanity and complexity behind the city’s struggle.” They prove themselves by mentioning the house that was sold and delivered across the ocean and the major job loss at the Packard Plant. The Packard Plant gad a huge decline in jobs after world war II and when photographers come through and take their pictures, there is no mention of it. I personally agree with Doucet and Philp to an extent. The people of Detroit are not being heard and it’s causing only a further decline in the city. However, ruin porn is not the place for their voices. Ruin porn is photographic art of a decaying building, not an online forum where people can ask for help. You can’t ask a flower artist to paint the bees because you’re worried about their extinction. Instead, companies such as cheerio’s and others that involve honey make the fight to prevent the loss of bees along with other corporations. Detroit needs to do the same by not looking at the artist who do not focus on issues of poverty and instead look and the people who
Today, the media plays an essential role in the Western civilization. Considering this, entertainment, social media, and the news are all intrinsically valuable media literacy devices. In addition, the media “helps to maintain a status quo in which certain groups in our society routinely have access to power and privilege while others do not” (Mulvaney 2016). For instance, both in the music and pornographic industry the female body is perceived as a sexual object. In Dreamworlds 3: Desire, Sex & Power in Music Video, Sut Jhally mentions that “examining the stories that music videos tell us about both male and female sexuality, about what is considered normal, allows us to do more than just understand one aspect of our culture” (Jhally 2007).
Just changing a few small items in history can alter human belief. By constantly feeding the people fraudulent information and hiding the truth, the Party can get the people to believe almost anything; eventually leading to complete dominance over the mind. Orwell argues that society is completely oblivious to the constraints that are involved in everyday life. There is no individual in society and everyone remains the same. “Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought?”
In the documentary, “Cleveland: Confronting Decline in an American City” the short movie analyses the great risk confronting Cleveland as a city as result of deterioration and dilapidation of the urban core. The documentary discusses factors that are responsible for this problem and possible solutions; as this has become a phenomenon, not just in Cleveland but other major US cities. The issue of the urban decline in most cities cuts across people, commerce, and the economy in general. However, the questions of how most cities arrived at their current predicament, consequences of abandoning these concerns, and what can be done to reverse the bad situation, remain unanswered.
An analysis of the relationship between pornography and the American culture reveals that the industry is blamed for dozens of social ills for the men of our society. Those ills also work to damage the women in several irreparable ways. Some of the damages to men include: illegal sexual behavior, illegal non-sexual behavior, callousness, sexual harassment, casual sex, and multiple sexual partners. The problems for the women directly involved in the industry are long term and long lasting, creating overall issues that affect women’s economic and social status. But what are there damages caused by the type of movies most women love, the type of movies they drag their boyfriends and husbands to, the type of movies millions watch unashamedly in public-the romantic comedy?
Psychological manipulation the Party uses on the citizens is one of the first themes Orwell exposes in this dystopian society. The Party maintains this manipulation by constantly overwhelming citizens with useless information and propaganda. And when memory failed and written records were falsified—when that happened, the claim of the Party to have improved the conditions of human life had got to be accepted, because there did not exist, and never again could exist, any standard against which it could be tested. (Orwell 82) Winston Smith, the protagonist, is having a frustrating conversation with an old man about life before the Revolution.
With people losing their jobs, it’s harder to pay bills so people lose their houses due to foreclosure. People making a decent pay wage refuse to stay in communities where every other house is vacant and vandalized. I think many parts of Detroit are still divided by color because of crimes also. People who have families or plan on starting families don’t want to raise their children around violence. I was born in Detroit, I can honestly say I love being from Detroit. My parents make enough money to stay outside of Detroit but they chose not to which I g...
Countering the Culture of Sex is an article by Ellen Goodman dealing with the entertainment industry’s plague upon society. With sex rooted deep in children’s minds it creates this idea of what life revolves around. Digging deeper, Goodman brings up the point of why one never sees the consequences of sex. If the media were to show the consequences of people’s actions, the industry could create a sense of fear into the public.
Orwell reveals how ignorant people are due to Big Brother erasing history. In the beginning of the novel, the main character’s job is describe to be rewriting history, “By 2050, earlier. Probably- all real knowledge of old speak will have disappeared. The whole literature of the past will have been destroyed.” (Orwell pg.65) Literature such as Shakespeare will be destroyed due to the government’s censorship rules. 1984 is ban by the government in Russia, thus readers know that if government can censor this book, imagine what else the government can block. Later on in the novel, Winston explains to O’Brien about what will happen to history, “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.” (Orwell pg. 313) Throughout history, it is obvious that our
...mes, music, clothing, and television and someone can make a stand to stop the selling of these products that have normalized the behaviors of pimping and prostitution (cite). One way that increased the efforts of minimizing the demand of prostitution was the outlaw the sale of sex and criminalizing the “john,” and this was first done in Sweden and Norway (cite). “a societal message is communicated that it is inappropriate to buy and sell women and children for sexual purposes (cite).” The final possibility that is discussed by (cite) in the efforts to provide for the victims is to increase the services for children and youth coming out of commercial sexual situations. Fundraising efforts can be made to help support local shelters in knowing that a safe place to live is a major impact on the risk of being considered a repeat runaway or revictimized into the sex trade.
When you look at Detroit you look at a city that has went through a lot and a city that is strong. News always portrays Detroit as a bad place and as place where violence. Well I think if we each dedicate time to change Detroit or to even study criminology to help change the amount of crimes committed.
Orwell shows that history is altered to align with Big Brother's thoughts on how the world should operate, which is why they alter history and destroy it. “The past he reflected has not merely been altered; it has been actually
Education has solved many social problems and it has also helped develop societies. From this, we can say that education reflects the society, and it is one of the matters of concern in many countries. In South Korea, all of the students take education very seriously, and the schools are also very strict; While American education system gives students a lot of freedom. It is no wonder that there is no country that shares their education system with other countries because they have their own culture and customs. These days many students from foreign countries are coming to the United States as an exchange student to share their culture and study. I also came from South Korea as international students in an American college. I found that the American education system and the South Korean education system have many differences. However, since I have been studying in America for a couple of years, I think that is the American educational system would adapt certain aspects of the South Korean educational system, American students could benefit greatly. From this experience I have discovered that, the primary difference between the Korean education and American education; school educational system, parents’ passion for their children’s education, and student’s daily schedule.
an also kept very private. Since feminists and adult film has come together over the past couple of years , many adults films has not been the same. Feminist bring a middle ground of the fantasy world and some social problems together. They bring about ways that stop inequality , from the color of your skins to your sexual orientation. Society see adult films as woman being degraded , but feminist see it as woman being empowered and coming in tune with one self. So in this paper we will discuss how many people see adult films as a social problem and others question why should it be a social problem.
This is a critique of" Roger And Me", a documentary by Michael Moore. This is a film about a city that at one time had a great economy. The working class people lived the American dream. The majority of people in this town worked at the large GM factory. The factory is what gave these people security in their middle working class home life. Life in the city of Flint was good until Roger Smith the CEO of GM decided to close the factory. This destroyed the city. Violent crime became the highest in the nation, businesses went bankrupt, people were evicted from their rented homes. There were no jobs and no opportunity. Life was so bad that Money magazine named Flint the worst place to live in the entire nation. When news of the factory closing first broke, Michael Moore a native of flint decided to search for Roger Smith and bring him to Flint.
If we didn’t have a written history in America, we would forget what we founded this country on leaving our rights as a nation be at stake giving an increased chance for bad times in history to repeat itself. Since our culture
