Education has solved many social problems and it has also helped develop societies. From this, we can say that education reflects the society, and it is one of the matters of concern in many countries. In South Korea, all of the students take education very seriously, and the schools are also very strict; While American education system gives students a lot of freedom. It is no wonder that there is no country that shares their education system with other countries because they have their own culture and customs. These days many students from foreign countries are coming to the United States as an exchange student to share their culture and study. I also came from South Korea as international students in an American college. I found that the American education system and the South Korean education system have many differences. However, since I have been studying in America for a couple of years, I think that is the American educational system would adapt certain aspects of the South Korean educational system, American students could benefit greatly. From this experience I have discovered that, the primary difference between the Korean education and American education; school educational system, parents’ passion for their children’s education, and student’s daily schedule.
First, the South Korean schools are very strict; otherwise the American schools system’s major point is freedom. For example, the Korean schools are taking control of student’s freedom, which means that the schools set the student’s daily schedule. Most of the classes include sciences and liberal arts, but are limited on sports or any other activities such as art, music and so on. The most important thing that Americans should learn from South Korean students in their high passion for education. In the United States, people are free to continue their educations anytime whether the student young or not. Also, there are no maximum limit of age to stop them and that can make them equal and living in comfortable lives. In today’s society, we would describe high school as a four-year passageway into adulthood [college]. Ever since our current education system was implemented, high school would begin at the 9th grade level, and end at the 12th grade level. With the average age for 9th graders to be at 14 transitioning to 15 and for 12th graders to average in at 17 transitioning to 18; this have been the norm, for the American society for ages. In Leon Botstein’s “Let Teenagers Try Adulthood,” he writes an opinionated piece on how the current American education system is obsolete; plaguing the current youth by preventing their way into adulthood and isolating them from their experiences of it. From my experiences as a Junior in high school, I do have to disagree with Botstein’s statement that the current American high school is obsolete. Age and maturity would not, and should not be the main cause of the American high school system to go obsolete. Something I have always known since I was a little kid is that the educational system in this country is a complete fraud. American schools claim to live by the ideal of No Child Left Behind, but millions of students get cast aside each and every year. In schools these days, it is obvious which students are the elite—those that are raised up and motivated to go to college—and the ordinary student— those that are somewhat ignored throughout their schooling and are lucky if they even earn a GED. As a recent graduate of high school, and a product of this country’s educational system, I have had the opportunity to develop my own opinions regarding the myth of education in our society. Based upon my observations going through the school system, and the various arguments posed by several authors in “Rereading America”, I strongly believe that schooling in this society caters solely to students in the elite category while ostracizing students that do not live up to the elitist ideal.

In Japanese schools, from elementary schools to universities, teachers direct what students should do or how they should be. Students follow the school rules and the directions of teachers. In American schools, on the other hand, students have to be more independent than Japanese students in many ways. Because of differences between Japanese and American schools, Japanese students who begin to study in an American school are shocked, and they take a pretty long time to adjust themselves to the way of American schools. Differences between schools in the two countries are seen in classrooms and during classes: the style of lectures, the relationship between student and teachers, and the style of examinations.

I grew up in Korea until grade 11 and came to Canada. Even though I spent seven years in Canada, I am still strongly influenced by norms in Korean society. I realized that I came from one of the countries that feel more threatened with uncertainty and not comfortable with not fitting the norms in the society. In Korean society, females who are 24 years old usually finish their four-years of degree and look for the job. Moreover, majority people expect to finish degree in four years. When my parents kept reminding me the norm in Korean society, I felt discouraged because I did not want to be behind the rest of same age people in Korea. I realized that I felt helpless not because my parents were not supportive with my decision, but because of the uncomfortable feeling that comes from not fitting the norm. What I specifically gained was a better sense of Korea as a unique cultural entity with its own sense of excellence and its individuality. I have also learned that regardless of the hardships Koreans have suffered in this century, they have successfully endured every worst situation a nation can ever experience. From Japan's colonial rule to the heavy influence Korea felt from Russia's communist state and America's democracy, Korea was able to withstand all these instabilities and overcome to what may be a healthy and modernized nation. Most people would say that if you obtained your education in the United States of America, then you got the best education of all. This is a fascinating idea but I absolutely disagree on this. I believe that education is still based upon an individual’s character and insight in life. It is dependent on how one values education. Even if one has attained the highest education in the United States, he can still be considered uneducated if he doesn’t apply what he has learned in school. The education in the Philippines is better in some ways. Due to difficulty of life in the country and the strong desire of the Filipinos to strive hard, the education becomes the top priority.
