Is the NSA Spying Justified?
Benjamin Franklin once said, “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” By saying this, he means that the violation of rights for national security is not justified. Because I agree with Benjamin Franklin in this statement, I am strongly against the mass collection of data by the NSA. Because the NSA surveillance of us does nothing but hurt us, the collection of data is where the line between national security versus personal liberty must be. This is because the collection of data goes against the 4th amendment, leaves everyone open to cyber attacks, and does nothing to actually improve national security. Cyber attacks on the US government are common. According to NBC, there have been 700 cyber attacks on the US from China alone. Each time they attack us, they steal military secrets and data about America's critical infrastructure, particularly the electrical power and telecommunications, things that are necessary and could be dangerous in the wrong hands(Winderm 1). Not only that, but a leak of the data that had been collected on citizens has already occurred when Edward Snowden leaked information that the government was collecting. If Edward Snowden could do it, surely someone else in the world can too, and next time we might not be as lucky with how much information gets leaked. Having information stolen is harmful to us because criminals can use it to get things like credit card numbers or social security numbers, and terrorists can use it to plan an attack. The NSA surveillance has left all of us open to attack, which clearly is counterintuitive to what the government is supposed to be doing and is another reason why not to give up personal liberties for national
