The appropriation of Indigenous culture in sports propagates harmful stereotypes, disrespects the culture it is taken from, and generates profit that is not shared with the people whom it comes from. This ranges from logos such as the coastal style of the Vancouver Canucks logo or the Cleveland Guardians previous mascot Chief Wahoo to the chop celebration found in the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Braves stadiums. The stereotypical mascot chief wahoo, the Cleveland Guardians mascot until 2018, was a racist caricature of a native American. The mascot featured a caricature man with red skin, black hair and a feathered headband. Since 2018 when the Guardians were called the Indians, they have changed the logo and shown that change is positive and easy. The Vancouver Canucks have a similar issue. Sean Carleton, a historian and Indigenous Studies scholar at the University of Manitoba, said the orca logo’s “Coast Salish-inspired imagery was designed without Indigenous consultation” (Azpiri). Instead of supporting a racist image, this is instead appropriating the culture. The University of Kansas published an article that stated, “Teams choose Native Americans as mascots and role models because people admire these people. We view them as strong and courageous with many other positive qualities, not as negative stereotypes.” (“Evolving Views on Native American Team Names and Mascots”) These admirations are not respected. They appropriate traditions, morphing them into something different altogether. This claim would state that using stolen culture is right where it is far from it. While viewing these outdated figures as positive and courageous has a positive effect, it ignores the racist roots of the characters. 45. President Donald Trump stated his views on the change, “'I like sports and I like tradition. So you have a team called the Cleveland Indians? Indians. The. They're all Indians. And they took the Cleveland Indians and made it to the Cleveland Guardians.” He is arguing that the Guardians team should have stayed with the name Indians because of its tradition. This tradition stems from deeply rooted racism, as Indigenous people are not Indian at all. It also shows how racism against indigenous people in sports carries over into international politics. Lumping two ethnic groups together because our ancestors didn’t have a basic understanding of our globe is an offensive and outdated thought process as it is purely out of convenience
