A Genetically Modified Organism can be known as a “sped up process of evolution” (Penn State Ag Science Magazine). Genetic modification is done by removing a certain part of DNA from a gene, then placing it into a different organisms gene. The technology is widely used by farmers (Penn State Ag Science Magazine). Genetic modification is usually performed on crops, therefore is “in 70% of our food” (Davis). Genetically Modified Organisms are unsafe for the environment, and will create more long term problems. One might say GMO’s ( Genetically Modified Organisms), are excellent for the economy. But, is an affordable cost, worth poisoning our bodies, and possibly destroying the pollination process around us? GMO’s are slowing down natural selection
Genetically modified? That alone should be a cause for alarm, and have you wondering, what exactly is in this that I am eating? Yet every day millions of American’s choose to load up on food filled with GMO’s, and not even know it. First we must understand what GMO’s are. GMO’s are any organism whose genetics has been altered using genetic engineering. We should not be tampering with nature, and should try to grow organically as much as possible. There has not been enough research on GMO’s to know the potential long term effects it can have on us, so this is why GMO’s should be banned.
Genetically modified foods or GM foods are foods that have been changed to improve the size of the product and to progress the efficiency of food production. Genetic engineering can be done on both plants and animals and are processed to make the desired characteristics that are required for selling. Genetically modified food has become a controversial topic because people have different viewpoints on which type of food is better for their health. Many protests were created to ban genetically modified foods because of the harm that it caused to the people and the environment. Although people have different opinions towards this topic, there are numerous advantages and disadvantages in producing and consuming genetically modified foods.
One of the most controversial topics discussed in the world of medicine pertained to the topic of genetic engineering. Some doctors saw it as tool of world destruction, however many of them seeing it as a chance of potential cures and treatments. Charles Darwin first introduced this idea. In his first publication, The Origin of Species, he introduced the idea of survival of the fittest. He stated that evolutionary change was only possible due to the genetic variation between each generation, including the combination of different characteristics. In other words, he wrote that only those who had desirable characteristics, in terms of survival, would be able to pass down their genes. If two bred and possessed desirable characteristics, then the desirable characteristic would strengthen, modifying the genes. Darwin’s theories have been the base of many medical breakthroughs that contributed to genetic engineering. The idea soon influenced medicine, the idea of strengthening the healthy cells and isolating them from the unhealthy ones. The simple idea Darwin discovered had changed medicine as a whole. Today, doctors and scientists are able to manipulate genes in order to create new treatments and cures. Today, Darwin’s discovery changed and saved millions of lives around the world. Despite the fact that genetic engineering can have a negative impact on society, it was an important discovery due to the advancement in conventional medicine.

The techniques used for producing the genetically developed organisms include cloning recombinant DNA technology. Primary uses of genetically modified organisms are mostly in areas of agriculture and biomedical research. GMOs compromise numerous aids to society, including enlarged crop yields and the development of fresh therapeutic agents which prevent and treat a wide variety of human diseases . However there are some concerns around the use of genetically modified organisms which include the risks stood to human health and the initiation of insecticide resistant superbugs. This essay will provide evidence to support the evidence that the genetic modifications of crops produces better results than selective breeding or mutation.
Are genetically modified foods safe? Genetically modified foods are crop plants created for human or animal consumption using molecular biological techniques. These plants have been modified to enhance certain traits like increased resistance to herbicides or improve nutritional content. This process traditionally has been done through breeding, but is not very accurate. Scientists have been using biotechnology to implant the gene that makes the plants act the way they want them to. Genetically modified foods have advantages and disadvantages on the environment and advantages and disadvantages on society. We have to weigh the positives and negatives to see if genetically modified foods are healthy for us and if we really need them.

There is proof, however, in developing countries like India genetically modified crops like cotton containing bacillus thuringiensis, or Bt have resulted in higher yields and profits for the poor farmers. Thanks to its resistance to bollworm farmers using Bt cotton can save money on herbicides, saving more money for food and education. Many of the GMOs have been developed to only assists farmers; now the development to provide nutrition around the word with GMOs is in development.

Suddenly, activists and the media have become obsessed with avoiding GMOs and labeling them as an evil new technology. The truth is these products have been out in the public since the early 1990s. Genetic engineering (GE) is just a tool that is being used to improve our methods in agriculture, just as technology including computers or other new electronic updates that make our lives easier day by day. We use science to make improvements little by little over the years while some fail others may be successful. It is safe to say some technology that comes with life altering benefits may also come with some risks. Those who argue against GMOs choose to ignore all the benefits GE has provided us with so far and tend to focus on risks that realistically have nothing to do with the science of genetic engineering. Most anti-GMO activists are uneducated on the topic and listen to unreliable bias sources. The media has people focused on the wrong side of the debate. Banning genetic engineering, an important biotechnology, would be an impossible and foolish fight. In a world with a tremendously fast growing population, climate changes due to global warming, and economical faults, GMOs might be the best solution.

GMOs also affect the environment, ecosystems and other animal species. The cons outweigh the pros in the case of GMOs.
GMO’s stands for genetically modified organisms. The reason why I am pro for GMO’s is, because it is not dangerous, it is safe to eat, and no one has gotten sick from it. I actually myself ate some GMO’s and so does everyone that I know and they are fine. GMO’s has been on the market for the longest time, so if they were a health threat we would know by now. 88% is used in the United States. I agree with the people in the video that are for GMO’s not only because they have a degree but because they had facts to prove that they were right unlike the others they had nothing to back them up. For example, the first time a person tastes a delicious juicy piece of prime rib or a delightful hamburger with cheese and ham, his world is never the same. However, since the beginning of the twentieth century, the production of food has been supplemented by science. This has triggered an angry dispute between the people who support the advances of biotechnology and people who love nature. In order to understand the controversy, we have to know the meaning of genetically modified foods. With new technological advances, scientists can modify seeds from a conventional seed to a high tech seed with shorter maturation times and resistance to dryness, cold and heat. This is possible with the implementation of new genes into the DNA of the conventional seed. Once these "transgenes" are transferred, they can create plants with better characteristics (Harris 164-165). The farmers love it not only because it guarantees a good production, but the cost is also reduced. On the other hand, organizations such as Greenpeace and Friends of Earth have campaigned against GMO (“Riesgos”) because they think that they are negatively affecting the earth (Gerdes 26). Both the advocates and the opponents of genetically modified foods have excellent arguments.

One of the biggest, positive impacts in my life, came from Jeeps. To me, my Jeeps are not just boring, old vehicles, it’s much more than that, they are an amazing tool that is used for much more than just transportation. One of the most common reasons I use my Jeep for, is to clear my head, the simple act of driving brings me at peace. The greatest reason, anyone would use a Jeep for is entertainment, by mostly driving around in the middle of nowhere and trying to go over big hills, boulders, or any obstacle that stands in front of them. Jeeps and the drivers also bring a sense of community with them wherever they go. With each Jeep owner I’ve met share the same feeling towards the community, on the road and off the road. Jeeps are one of the most important aspects to my life because they provide me with peace, entertainment, and community.

Genetic engineering is currently an effective yet dangerous way to make this statement tangible. Though it may sound easy and harmless to change one’s genetic code, the conflicts do not only involve the scientific possibilities but also the human morals and ethics. When the scientists first used mice to practice this experiment, they “improved learning and memory” but showed an “increased sensitivity to pain.” The experiment has proven that while the result are favorable, there is a low percentage of success rate. Therefore, scientists have concluded that the resources they currently own will not allow an approval from the society to continually code new genes. While coding a new set of genes for people may be a benefitting idea, some people oppose this idea.

The spread of antibiotic resistance, the creation of dangerous novel pathogens and diseases,the loss of biodiversity in farming, unsustainable agriculture, and the creation of new viral diseases through transfer are all harmful components of genetic engineering. This process is also considered a disadvantage because it offends religion when it questions whether man has the right to manipulate the right and coarse nature.
