With the 2016 campaign currently taking place in the United States, several candidates have captured the attention of thousands. Both of the political parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, have unusual candidates running for the Presidency. It even seems as if some of the current candidates are just desperate for attention. However, the runners seizing attention, such as Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, have political views located on the opposite ends of the spectrum from each other. Bernie Sanders, a Democratic candidate and Vermont senator, is a seventy-four-year-old Jewish man who carries unusual qualities from other political candidates. issues concerning Americans. His title as a democratic socialist, his “underdog” background, and his environmental policies that convey to many environmentally concerned voters, make Bernie Sanders stand out.
Many United States Americans have the notion that socialism is tied to bad connotations. Due to this misinformed belief, politicians avoid the title “socialist” in order to keep a good reputation. However, Bernie Sanders stays true to being a socialist despite the misunderstandings of the true meaning behind socialism. The Jewish candidate identifies as a democratic socialist, but because this includes the word “socialist”, some people move far from supporting Sanders. In actuality, democratic socialists have ideals far from those of notorious dictators, such as Joseph Stalin. At a 1981 Boston Globe event, Sanders even states, “I’ve stayed away from calling myself a socialist because I did not want to spend half my life explaining that I did not believe in the Soviet Union or in concentration camps” (Kruse 2). As matter of fact, Sanders has no wicked intentions. He believes in policies that involve government taking action in financially supporting the healthcare, childcare, college education, and more. This means not allowing the government to be controlled …show more content…
by the influence of money from large corporations. Sanders thinks that the United States should function like other countries, such as Finland, in terms of low-income inequality, parental leave benefits, free healthcare, and other policies that wouldn’t burden citizens with debt. What thousands of people admire about Sanders is his watchfulness over government regulation in the economy. A professor from the University of Memphis once wrote that Sanders believes that socialism means that we create a society where “poverty is absolutely unnecessary”, corporations aren’t greedy, and “where human beings can own the means of production and work together…” (Kruse 3). From his belief for free college education to his desire for free childcare, Sanders reaches out to citizens of all ages. Not only does Bernie Sanders attract an abundance of people for his absurd title as a socialist, but also because of how much his background differs from other politicians. The typical political candidate comes from a wealthy background. In terms of early life, Bernie Sanders is the “underdog.” Sanders grew up in Flatbush, Brooklyn and was an ordinary student in high school. None of his classmates ever recalled his interest in politics. Although he wished to attend a college out of town, Sanders had to attend Brooklyn College, to get free tuition, like most students.
This part of his background is what reflects on his policies today. Sanders attracts the attention of young adults because he wants make college free and available to everybody, regardless of their financial status. He even stated in an interview, “When I was a kid growing up, I think my instincts always were for the underdog…” (Barkan 5). While in college, Bernie studied what he wanted, rather than what he was told to. He stood out from the average student by participating in major historical movements, such as the Civil Rights Movement and the Peace Movement. This is where Sanders developed most of his keen interest for politics. Many people can relate to Sanders’s early hardships, from his tragic family life to having financial adversities. Aside from his relatable upbringing, the Jewish presidential candidate has stolen the hearts of many
Earth-lovers. Usually political officials are only concerned about issues regarding the economy and social principles. A majority of the time, candidates are too busy focusing on materialistic policies and they completely disregard one of the biggest concerns in the world: climate change. However, Bernie Sanders not only prioritizes his economic and social values, but also his concern regarding environment. This passionate side of Sanders further expands his number of supporters. He was actively involved in combating climate change and was voted the number one Climate Leader in the 113th Senate by the Climate Hawks Vote. According to Senator Bill McKibben, in terms of climate issues, Sanders “has been the most aggressive voice in Senate” (Adler 3). The Vermont senator made many efforts, while in Senate, to pass bills and acts regarding the environment, such as, the Green Jobs Act that allowed funding for clean and efficient energy research and job training. Bernie Sanders expresses the urgency for environmental policies because if we don’t go through with these policies, then we will face “more drought, more famine, more rising sea levels, more floods, more ocean acidification, more extreme weather disturbances, more disease and more human suffering” (Barkan 2). As more people become further educated about the dire state of our environment, Sanders becomes a popular topic among citizens. Bernie Sanders, a Democratic candidate, catches the attention of thousands across the nation. The Jewish candidate labels himself as a “democratic socialist,” which to some people this term has a bad connotation. However, his views show that democratic socialism is far from terrible. Sanders is relatable because of his early life struggles and his environmental concerns. He addresses issues concerning people of all ages because of his diverse political views. The aspiring Vermont senator proves to be different than the candidates who only say what others want to hear. These factors could lead Bernie Sanders to a successful election as the 2016 Democratic nominee and possibly the next President of the United States.
Bernie Sanders, current candidate for the President of the United States, Democratic party affiliation, believes that all students deserve the opportunity to receive an affordable, quality education from the earliest stages of schooling to high-level degrees. He has sponsored bills to make public colleges and universities tuition-free, as well as to drastically reduce interest rates on student loan debt.
In Socialism Coincides with American Values, Jedediah Purdy produces an interesting insight and argument about the theory of socialism. He believes that socialism can be incredibly beneficial to the United States political and economic systems but are swept aside due to harsh misconceptions of the idealism. He states, “There are essential insights that we lose track of when we let ‘socialism’ be turned into a slur.” Purdy then argues socialism is more American than most Americans want to believe.
After three years in office, it is evident to all but his most ardent supporters that the President of the United States is a strident Marxist. His forceful policies, actions, and thunderous attacks on freedom are straight from the writings of Karl Marx. The evils of Capitalism, state control of business, redistributive change to achieve social justice, and the diminishing of personal, economic and property rights are among the daily rants from Obama and his administration.
This has been one of the most fascinating political seasons in recent history. The level of discourse and potential scandals on both sides has increased my attention level. Rather you support either of these candidates, both the fringe candidates from the left and the right both have struck a chord with a lot of people. Whether either of them wins their party’s nomination and becomes the president is still left to be decided. Mainstream political pundits and major social institutions have either condemned or flatly said that some of these candidates’ proposals are not feasible, but to the electorate that doesn’t seem to matter.
Socialists make no compromises with McCarthyism or with Stalinism. Not only is there no contradiction between an uncompromising, unrelenting protest against McCarthyism and a rejection of the corrupt, self-defeating politics of Stalinism. These positions go hand in hand. They are both essential in today's fight for workers' self-emancipation and socialism from below.
Socialism is a word that has obtained a bad connotation in American society. Politicians are loath to lay claim to it, and often using it to lambast their political opponents with it. Yes in many ways America has seemed to embrace the economic benefits of Capitalism so whole heartedly, thoughts of a tangled bureaucratic mess of welfare and wealth distribution that is so contrary to the American idea of individualism are conjured up at the mere thought of Socialism. In fact many still equate Socialism with Communism and are given to thoughts of the Cold War, and the battle of ideologies that it entailed. Many Americans would perhaps be quite surprised to learn that Socialism had found a place in American society at one time, and that it held a considerable amount of influence over the direction the country would take.
In this section of Becoming a Learner, Sanders effectively emphasizes an important truth of college life: the student’s education is the student’s responsibility, and to be truly successful, the student must take their education into their own hands and they ought to do what they can to ensure that they
Bernard “Bernie” Sanders, is one of the best candidates for this years 2016 presidential election. He is the junior United States Senator from Vermont. He has demonstrated his passion towards an equal and stabilized country. Sanders is a man who believes in a country that is equal and all voices should be heard. Socioeconomic issues are to be heard of by all people because these issues are what make the people and the country. His propositions to a better socioeconomic country will better the relationships we have with one another. Voting for Bernie Sanders, means voting for a country that will be equal to all the people living here. A country deserves to be united by all the people living here regardless of race. We are all human, we all deserve
That the president and his administration have taken away the car companies and the banks as well as other institutions and the healthcare system then that is socialism. Most of the opponents of the healthcare policy reforms that have happened in the recent years are basing their reasons on the myths that are being spread by the minority of the society members who can finance their health needs out of hands.
Socialism is basically the opposite of liberalism because it appeals to the working class and worked in countries with authoritative governments with large presences in their countries economy. Russia and Germany are two of the countries socialism absolutely thrived in. The working class appealed to this ideology in government because it balanced everyone, made everyone equal, by giving everyone the same wage. So a manager of the factor would make as much as a janitor in the same factory. Under Russian rule Jews were treated as aliens. The Russians would form pogroms or riots so that jews would flee Russia. This was one of the examples of anti-Semitism, or anti-judaism in Europe. Jews were considered evil and were chased out of many towns and villages because of their association to money. And with the new government reforms if money was bad then jews had everything to do with it. These ideologies have helped shape the world in the place it is
“When people in the United States are introduced to the concept of socialism - whether in the popular media or in a high school class - they are presented with a simple equation: socialism = a crippled economy that fails to meet people's basic needs + a totalitarian government” (Robertson). Robertson proves a good point in saying this, because generally children in the United States grow up either being taught that socialism is bad or evil, which is completely wrong, or they end up being taught nothing of socialism at all. It is until these children are exposed to a socialist government, through education or experience (which few usually have the privilege of doing) t...
Feel the Bern. We have all heard this political slogan this past year for the running Senator Bernie Sanders, who is known for his messy hair and crowd enticing speeches. The speech I have chosen to analyse is one that he professed to the students of Georgetown University in Washington D.C. last November. He speaks about how he is a democratic socialist and how many highly respectable persons of the past were as well, and that their socialist ideas are some of the defining beliefs that are held in the United States today. His speech touches on many issues that need to be fixed in America and the world today, those included are the wealth gap of the middle class and the top tenth of the one percent,
In an article titled Socialism Is Not Harmful they instead believe that democracy and socialism complement one another and that the corporation and the society should meet the needs of all people (2). The Democratic Socialist do not believe that the government should own every business, but that businesses should be ran by the employees who work for them (2). Their main goal is to get wealth into as many peoples hands as possible. What they despise is not the very rich, instead what they are actively speaking against is the gap between the very rich and the rest of the working class. The remainder of the article is spent trying to discredit myths spread about socialism, such as the government wanting to own everything and assuring people that they are not

This book contains a basic yet earnest truth. This world requires Marx now like never before. This thin volume ought to help to arm another era of socialists with the thoughts important to win the fights ahead. At exactly that point will we all be able to appreciate an all-around progressive
