The Pros And Cons Of Autonomous Cars

1809 Words4 Pages

The four wheeled automobiles have evolved progressively every year since their creation in 1885 by Karl Benz. 132 years later, cars now have the potential to drive around safely on their own without requiring a driver. This idea would have been considered “science fiction” 10 years ago but could now become the reality for all car owners (Guerra, 2015). Accident preventing technology is already starting to become common in most vehicles out in the market now. Since self driving cars do not require a driver, there is no limitation to who can operate the car. Through thorough investigation of the advantages and disadvantages of autonomous cars being a standard vehicle for most drivers, analysis will be done to decide plausibility of autonomous …show more content…

In order for self-driving cars to operate, it requires sensors to detect whether a car is braking to stop or yielding the right of way when another car has the right of way. Currently, self operated cars do not have the capability of functioning one hundred percent of the time in poor weather conditions. For example, when rain and other weather disturbances occur, it is difficult for the sensors to react resulting in a dangerous driving environment for the people in the car and for the drivers around that car. If majority of people on the streets use autonomous cars and the weather affects the driving abilities of the computer, it could potentially be a deadly catastrophe. In addition, if the weather affects the traffic lights such as the power going out and there is a human traffic conductor present, the autonomous car will not be able to understand what the traffic conductor is doing. It is crucial for these types of cars to be able to detect human signals because traffic lights are prone to get damaged, it is …show more content…

Today’s cars can already come with several self driving features. Automated features in cars are becoming quite normal, some of which features include automatic opening trunk with sensoring technology, lane centering, self parking, and blind spot detection. The technology enables a car to be safer because the car can “see” it’s surroundings (Shelley, 2013). These features have been installed in cars for about a decade now and the costs of the features are decreasing every year. Self driving cars are circulating all over the world, Tesla for example has been on the rise in 2017 because they have become more affordable. Although the Tesla may not be fully automated, it is a glimpse of the future. Other than Tesla, companies such as Google and Ford are racing to get the fully autonomous car on the road in the next five years or so. Unfortunately, self driving cars does not mean a better way of life for all. Society today is used to having human operated cars and people will not be convinced that the self driving car is completely
