Euthanasia has always been a very controversial topic amongst doctors and civilians. Many claim that active euthanasia is wrong no matter what the reason, while others see it as a merciful way for the patient to die. Some would say that passive euthanasia is the morally right thing to do, but others see it as unnecessary pain and suffering for the patient. James Rachels provides a strong argument on why active euthanasia should be allowed and explains the morality of “killing and letting die” In James Rachel’s argument, he explains why “active euthanasia is in many cases more humane than passive euthanasia”, how the “conventional doctrine leads to decisions concerning life and death on irrelevant grounds”, and how “killing and letting die has no moral importance”. His argument works by giving very reasonable, real world scenarios and justifies why he would choose active euthanasia over passive. Rachels explains how life and death is being decided on irrelevant grounds (page 3). He says that “the matter should be decided, if at all, on that basis (Down’s syndrome), and not be allowed to depend on the essentially irrelevant question of whether the intestinal tract is blocked”. He believes that the doctrine should be rejected because letting a baby die because of obstructed intestinal tracts when it has Down’s syndrome is not the way to decide life and death. It should be solely based on the Down’s syndrome and the judgement of the doctor and parents. It seems because of this, the baby is let to die and not killed. When there is nothing to be done, the baby should be killed and not let to slowly die. Although it seems wrong to kill a baby, the parents and doctor deemed it would be better to let it die, so why let the baby suffer instead of killing it
According to James Rachels, “both passive and active euthanasia are permissible.” (Luper and Brown, p.347). He gives a doctrine from American Medical Association quoting,” mercy killing is contrary to which the medical professional stands” (Luper and Brown, p. 347). He makes arguments against the doctrine as to why it would be rejected. One, a physician should let the patient end his life if he wants to so that the patient does not have to endure the suffering. However, Rachels says in that situation it’s better for the physician to kill the patient, rather than letting one die because using lethal injections can be painless and quick, whereas, letting one die can be a slow and painful process (Luper and Brown, p. 348). Moving forward to Sullivan I have explained how his reasons make no sense according to James Rachel’s. I have also shown Sullivan’s main weaknesses and one of his strong points against Rachel’s. I also gave some of Rachel’s weaknesses but after all I think that I have proven that Rachel’s argument is stronger than Thomas Sullivan for many reasons. There are many different stances one can take when considering active euthanasia versus passive euthanasia. Perhaps one may believe killing someone is far worse than letting someone die, or that there is no difference between killing and letting die. Rachels and Nesbit have different stances on killing versus letting die, both using the nasty cousins argument as an example. Rachels tries to show that there is no difference between killing and letting die and Nesbitt tries to show that killing is worse than letting die. Though Rachels and Nesbitt have well thought through views and examples, perhaps there is not just one side a reader can take, as it seems Rachels and Nesbitt have tried to make their readers believe. Velleman and Hooker have different perspectives on euthanasia, and whether there should be laws permitting voluntary and non-voluntary euthanasia. Although there are well-reasoned arguments on both sides, I would strongly agree with Hooker's argument that there should be a law permitting voluntary euthanasia when it is for the wellbeing of the person and that each individual should be able to make their own decision.

Suffering in pain and knowing that there is no hope is a horrible thing to experience as we live. Lying on a hospital bed in misery and grief because of a condition or illness that is hopeless is completely depressing to anyone. Euthanasia is one of the most controversial issues in society due to the difference in people’s point of views about dying. Although the lives of many patients can be saved with the latest breakthroughs in treatments and technology, we are still unable to find treatment for all diseases, and these patients have to go through painful or treatments that have greater risk than benefits only to prolong their life with little or no chance of full recovery. These patients struggle with physical and emotional pain for the reason that they feel like they are worthless because they can’t move or decide rationally. Euthanasia should be an option to certain terminal ill people because it allows them to choose whether they want to die or live a painful life.

Philosophers like Peter Singer and Margaret Battin have dedicated their personal and professional time to evaluating the choice to which a person has the right to continue to live or to die. In order to do this, we first have to examine what exactly euthanasia is. The practice of euthanasia can be classified in two different ways. First, euthanasia can be either active or passive. Active euthanasia involves the direct interruption of ongoing daily functioning that otherwise would be adequate to maintain life. Passive euthanasia involves the withholding or withdrawing of treatment that might support ongoing daily functions; without drugs or treatment the body would continue its process of shutting down. In the case of passive euthanasia, the argument can be made that the treatment is actually withholding the natural process of death. Secondly, euthanasia can be divided into three categories based on a level of consciousness: involuntary (death against ones wishes), voluntary (death based on expressed wishes), and non-voluntary (incapable of consent or competent decision-making).

Passive euthanasia means life-sustaining treatments are withheld and nothing is done to keep the patient alive. One of the main concerns that arose regarding active euthanasia is that it not only involves the death of a person, but the act of killing. (Person y kills person x for person x’s own benefit.) Killing is an inhumane act and is morally and universally wrong. When analyzing this point, many flaws appear. Passive euthanasia is when person y allows person x to die for person x’s benefit. Comparing the two situations, active and passive euthanasia are practically indistinguishable, except for the one point that in one you are killing someone, and the other you are simply letting someone die.
The reason so is that we have no way to figure from Rachels’ argument that Maggie’s decision was based in ethics. Rachels only discusses the morality of euthanasia in his argument. We can figure from his argument that Maggie’s decision was morally acceptable. However, we can conclude from other sources like Kant, Aristotle, and Nozick, that her decision was ethically acceptable. The way Maggie’s death was executed was not ethically acceptable, based on Kant’s principles. More than likely, a good majority of people have heard about euthanasia at least once in their lifetime. For those out there who have been living under a rock their entire lives, euthanasia “is generally understood to mean the bringing about of a good death – ‘mercy killing’, where one person, ‘A’, ends the life of another person, ‘B’, for the sake of ‘B’.” (Kuhse 294). There are people who believe this is a completely logical scenario that should be allowed, and there are others that oppose this view.
