Shelley’s Frankenstein can be considered as one of the first representations of a possible apocalypse that is now ubiquitous, humans will someday create something that will destroy mankind. In different works, this Armageddon takes various forms: in the iconic movie The Matrix man-made machines enslave the human race, while in another popular movie I Am Legend, a genetically engineered virus mutates and kills the vast majority of the world’s population. Frankenstein, however, is not intended to give the reader an impending sense of doom, instead it warns about the consequences of creating something, no matter the intent behind its creation, without exercising proper caution.
In both the previously mentioned films and also in Frankenstein, there are good motives for the creation of the destroyer. In The Matrix, robots are the logical evolution of today’s computers, in I Am Legend, the virus is created to cure cancer. However, there is an old adage: the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Shelley confirms this concept many times over in Frankenstein. By giving Frankenstein reasons to try to create life–the death of his mother at an early age, the disdain of his professor, and Frankenstein’s desire to prove himself–Shelley inspires empathy towards Frankenstein. When Frankenstein is eventually brought to ruin by his creation, Shelley implies an important message: no matter the benevolence behind someone’s intentions, the result of his efforts can become catastrophic, only proper caution will prevent disaster.

He contemplates to himself, “I was now about to form another being, of whose disposition I was ignorant, she might become ten thousand times more malignant than her mate, and delight, for its own sake, in murder and wretchedness” (170). He realizes that this monster is likely to become just as malevolent as the previous one, and with that thought in mind he proceeds to destroy it. Consequently, the world is saved from having to deal with another daemon, perhaps even a race of daemons, and humankind survives.
Therein lies the difference between Frankenstein and the typical apocalypse-esque movie. Frankenstein is cautious when he builds the second monster, he knows that it could wreak havoc upon society, he destroys it, and humankind is saved. Through Frankenstein, Mary Shelley’s opinion is clear: by simply taking the time to be cautious, one can prevent disaster.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is ‘one of the pioneering works of modern science fiction’, and is also a frightening story that speaks to the ‘mysterious fears of our nature’. Mary Shelley mocks the idea of “playing God”, the idea that came from the Greek myth of Prometheus, of the Greek titan who stole Zeus’ gift of life. Both the story of Frankenstein and Prometheus reveal the dark side of human nature and the dangerous effects of creating artificial life. Frankenstein reveals the shocking reality of the consequences to prejudging someone. The creature’s first-person narration reveals to us his humanity, and his want to be accepted by others even though he is different.
Although humans have the tendency to set idealistic goals to better future generations, often the results can prove disastrous, even deadly. The tale of Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, focuses on the outcome of one man's idealistic motives and desires of dabbling with nature, which result in the creation of horrific creature. Victor Frankenstein was not doomed to failure from his initial desire to overstep the natural bounds of human knowledge. Rather, it was his poor parenting of his progeny that lead to his creation's thirst for the vindication of his unjust life. In his idealism, Victor is blinded, and so the creation accuses him for delivering him into a world where he could not ever be entirely received by the people who inhabit it. Not only failing to foresee his faulty idealism, nearing the end of the tale, he embarks upon a final journey, consciously choosing to pursue his creation in vengeance, while admitting he himself that it may result in his own doom. The creation of an unloved being and the quest for the elixir of life holds Victor Frankenstein more accountable for his own death than the creation himself.
As Frankenstein is enroute to his pursuit of gaining more knowledge, he states, “I wished, as it were, to procrastinate all that related to my feelings of affection until the great object, which swallowed up every habit of my nature, should be completed” (Shelley 41). Frankenstein’s decision in allowing his intellectual ambitions to overpower everything else in his life leads him to be blinded to the dangers of creating life. He isolates himself from his society when creating the monster, letting himself be immersed in his creation while being driven by his passions, allowing nobody to be near him. The fact that he allows this creation of a monster to consume his total being reveals how blinded he is to the immorality of stepping outside the boundaries of science and defying nature. His goal in striving to achieve what wants to in placing man over nature makes him lose his sense of self as all he is focused on is the final product of his creation. He starts to realize his own faults as after he has created the monster, he becomes very ill and states, “The form of the monster on whom I had bestowed existence was forever before my eyes, and I raved incessantly concerning him” (48). The fact that Frankenstein’s creation turns on him and murders innocent people is never overlooked; it has been the subject of virtually every popularization of the novel. What is not often acknowledged is the fact that Frankenstein himself embodies some of the worst traits of humankind. He is self-centered, with little real love for those who care about him; he is prejudiced, inflexible and cannot forgive, even in death. While some of these traits could be forgivable, to own and flaunt them all should be enough to remind a careful reader that there are two "monsters" in Frankenstein.

In both cases, all the creation desires was a companion, be it Victor or a new creation. And, in both cases, Victor is influenced by his initial reaction of disgust at the sight of his original creation. This reaction originates from a preconception, a fear caused by the human nature to prejudge based on past experience. This prejudice is indeed the source of the pain and torment in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. If a "monster" exists in the novel, it is this aspect of human nature.

For children the word monster can be some evil creature living under their bed and for parents, a monster can be their child running around causing amuck in the house. Other people view the word monster as a person who is vicious and grisly like the Zodiac killer. In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Doctor Victor Frankenstein makes a creature whose description is the definition of monster. He is made of different parts from bodies—giving the creature a horrifying look— runs around the city, terrifying others of leaving their houses, and kills multiple people. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was a literary piece that touched on many different issues, not only in her time, but also today. The creation of life in Frankenstein was Shelley’s symbolic warning to the new industrialized era. “It also [can] be seen to be warning about the dangers of uncontrolled application of technology and its use without proper morality” (Brachneos). The warning in Frankenstein applies today more than ever because of the creation of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and computers that “think for themselves” The two are connected in a sense. As seen in the crucial decisions these three characters make in their lives, Shelley paints the anticipation of worrying over the future as a limiting factor in attaining personal success.
At first glance, the monster in Frankenstein is a symbol of evil, whose only desire is to ruin lives. He has been called "A creature that wreaks havoc by destroying innocent lives often without remorse. He can be viewed as the antagonist, the element Victor must overcome to restore balance and tranquility to the world." But after the novel is looked at on different levels, one becomes aware that the creature wasn't responsible for his actions, and was just a victim of circumstance.
