The power of Big Brother In the book “1984” by George Orwell, the book deals with government power. In the book, it debates about how the power of the government affected the people. Too much power by the state creates a dystopian world where everyone is forced to follow the government’s rules. The book mainly deals with four topics that are nationalism, futurology, censorship, and surveillance. One of the biggest examples would be surveillance because the citizens of Oceania had no privacy at all because they were constantly watched. Every apartment had telescreens, so that the people are listened and watched. Even public places like workstations had telescreens equipped along with microphones for listening into their conversations. Some of the Thought Police also act as undercover agents and pose as normal people and report anything that is in the wrong to the government. From an early age, children are also taught to report anything suspicious to the government sometimes even turning their backs against their parents. The smallest form of acting out of rebellion, like facial expression, would be resulted into arrest and imprisonment. Another major theme would be censorship. This theme is widely pointed out in the Ministry of Truth where pictures are changed and public places rewrite to get rid of them. One example of censorship in the book would be when Winston was charged with job of eliminating description to someone in the newspaper article. The background of 1984 is mainly divided into the social class of the people and the government system of Oceania. The social class is divided into the upper-class Inner Party, the middle-class Outer Party, and the lower-class Proles. As for the government, its divid... ... middle of paper ... ... children were also expected to join organizations. The people’s loyalty also had no choice, but to listen to these figures because they would suffer the punishments if they didn’t. Another example of Big Brother would be the reality game show called “Big Brother”. Contestants would be chosen to live together in a large house. They would also be separated from the outside world and be aware of events that are happening outside. Television cameras in the house, along with their own audio microphones, would constantly monitor them. This would be similar to the book “1984” because the citizens of Oceania were also constantly watched by the ruling party, with telescreens. 1984 showed us a good example of the government controlling our every move. It foreshadowed our future if we did let the government control us if we did not voice our opinions on certain things.
