Daydreaming is “a common variation of consciousness in which attention shifts to memories and desires, away from the immediate situation” (Zimbarbo 332). In the brain there is a complex web that controls the frontal and temporal lobes. This is called the “brain default network". It is used when the brain is at rest or concentrating on what happening at time. Daydreaming is not always including i...

My mind eagerly involves itself by engulfing my surroundings and giving them some meaning. The office workers, too busy to pay attention to the life that surrounds them catch my eyes first. They seem to be apathetic robots, preprogrammed to start at one location and go to another. They pay little attention to any detail unless it has to do with them. I chuckle at the automated behavior of these robots.

Stop what you are doing, clear your mind, and focus only on your breath. When your thoughts begin to wonder, refocus and bring them back to your breath. This seems like a simple task, but most of us struggle to clear our minds for more than a few moments. Today’s fast-paced and technology driven culture constantly bombards our senses and more importantly, our thoughts. Our thoughts are constantly commandeered by fantasies, anxieties, and worries. We spend most of our time reliving past events and pondering the future. We spend work days feeling resentful, wishing we were anywhere else. We sit through family dinners thinking about all the chores that need to be finished. We worry about attending the class reunion because we aren’t sure what everyone will think. We do all of these things rather than focus on the experiences happening right here and now. Most of us are aware of this behavior, and yet we do it anyway. We spend very little time in the present moment, not for lack of want

To begin with, mindfulness is when someone can pay attention to the present moment “without being devoted to different points of view” (Martin, 1997). Along with staying focused on the present moment, mindfulness is when the particular person does not judge the current experience as the person tries to comprehend the present situation. Mindfulness makes a person reflect on one’s self by not only figuring out one’s thoughts, but also the feelings that go along with it. The complex nature of mindfulness demonstrates that it has multiple purposes that cultivates a person into realizing the potential of the brain (Davis & Hayes,
The ability to stay in the present is a virtue. Most people are always living either in the past or in the future. So they are either worrying about the past, worrying about the past pains, the past results, the past failures, past relationships, past struggles or they are ruminating about the future fears, the future impossibilities, the future achievements, future possibilities. Worrying about the past or future would not benefit as you are putting yourself in a position of disadvantage. This is because thinking about the past losses or failures cannot change what has happened and ruminate about the future is not going to make that dream possible. I am going home.
Daydreaming is a part of almost all of people’s lives at some point. Daydreaming can take place anywhere, from the home, school, work, or even when you just happen to be taking a walk. Daydreaming is something that is an immense part of my life. I function much better when I daydream momentarily. Much of the older generation may say that daydreaming isn’t productive, or that it doesn’t get you anywhere, but I believe that daydreaming allows me to be more creative and successful.
Shawn T. Smith’s “The User’s Guide to the Human Mind” shows the way the brain reacts and the reason it reacts to certain events, tendencies, and otherwise work against us in functional pursuits. It helps us to understand why we develop anxiety and depression. He suggests us struggling against unhappy anxious thoughts and make friends with our minds. Smith states “your mind is not supposed to make you happy it’s supposed to help you survive.” The brain has bad habits one is avoiding new experiences two is our brain looks for problems that don’t exist. Smith states that the mind is built in such a way that most of its functions and drives lie outside our control.
People experience in an out of different states of consciousness, such as daydreaming, yet still able to prepare basic tasks. Consciousness is often described as when people are being attentive of their own surrounding and something within themselves. The subject of consciousness was very essential for many psychologists in the different approaches to psychology. Two of the perspectives to study consciousness, cognitive and biological, has guided us to reconsider the ideas about the mind. This can be described as part of a human being that allows them to express an awareness of the environment and background of experiences, as a part of our knowledge about consciousness (Holt et al. 2012). Reconsidering these diverse ideas of consciousness has made psychologists interested to learn more about the mystery of consciousness in many special ways.
