Introduction
This essay will consider the politics of spying. It will discuss examples of espionage as well as its necessity. The paper will also debate upon whether spying is an invasion of privacy and there for rights, or not. The essay begins by defining espionage. It offers examples of espionage and how it has been used by different countries in the past as well as how it is increasingly used today on a global scale. The paper concludes by offering the authors comments on spying as well as confirming or disconfirming its use as a tool in international relations
1.1. Defining espionage
The definition of espionage according to different sources. .the use of secret agents to steal information from other governments, enemies and competitors [Hulnick (2004:165)]. Practice of obtaining military, political, commercial or other secret information by means of spies or illegal monitoring devices. It is sometimes distinguished from the broader category of intelligence gathering by its aggressive nature and its illegality counterespionage efforts are directed detecting and thwarting espionage by others [political science/britannica]. the act of obtaining, delivering, transmitting, communicating or receiving information about the national defence with an intent, or reason to believe, that the information may be used to the injury of the nation or to the advantage of any foreign nation. [Oxford dictionary of USA military].

2.1. Is espionage a necessary tool in international relations?
There would be no need for espionage if life occurred in an ideal world where states are not self-interested, transparency exists between states and states trust their allies. Since life does not happen in an ideal world states ...
