Pablo Neruda was a Chilean poet born on July 12,1904 in the Chilean town of Parral. Neruda was known for his different writing styles, which included erotic romantic poems, surrealist poems, and political manifestos. His writing reached out to everyone across the world, being called “the greatest writer of the 20th century in any language ” by Novelist Gabriel Marquez (Goodman). Neruda was also known for his political affiliation with the Communist Political Party and his diplomatic service. Throughout his life, Pablo Neruda wrote over 700 poems, with one of them being “Always”.
Born Neftailí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, Neruda adopted his pen name “Pablo Neruda” after Czech poet Jan Neruda. Neruda published his writings under his pen, due to the disapproval of his father for becoming a writer (Encyclopedia of World Biography). Though his father opposed the occupation, Neruda at young age began to publish his work in the local daily newspaper and even began receiving awards of recognition for his writings. Still at a young age, Neruda published two collections of love poems, “Twenty Love Poems” and “Song of Despair.” With both of his love poem collections being translated into many languages, Neruda’s reputation as a poet spread internationally (Poetry Foundation). While his poems spreading across the globe and into the United States, many Americans struggled to separate his political views and his love poems.
Neruda began his diplomatic career in 1927. Serving as diplomat, Neruda traveled around the globe being stationed in Burma, Ceylon, Batavia, Singapore, Argentina, and Spain. By adding the exaggeration in the next lines, Neruda is able to give an image of the size of his love. He believes that if she brings every man she has been with, he will be able to ignore it all and only look at what the future has in store.
With over 700 poems, Pablo Neruda left a great legacy of literature behind for many to read. Through his different writing styles, like romantic and surrealist poems, Neruda was able to achieve many literary achievements. Although, many did not share in his stance for communism, Neruda achieved great notoriety for his political career. The experience he gained during his long political career helped shape him into becoming the greatest poet of the 20th century (A. Goodman).
