The Photosynthetic Process: The Most Important Process In Photosynthesis

987 Words2 Pages

Photosynthesis is a highly important process that takes place in plants primarily because without it life on this planet would not be able to function properly. “It produces the oxygen we breathe and the food we eat” (Harbinson). Without photosynthesis, life would not be able to sustain itself and our planet would be a barren wasteland. The Photosynthetic process converts light energy into chemical energy. The energy that’s created through the process then later is used to help fuel the organism’s activities. This process can be significantly more complicated than it sounds with different stages and many steps. The basics of the process known as photosynthesis are very straightforward but can become very complex once dissected. As a follow …show more content…

Water plays a key role in photosynthesis and it’s stated that “Water is a uniquely hardy molecule to be involved in photosynthesis” (Castelvecchi).Water acts as both an oxygen provider as well as an electron feeder. During the photosynthetic process, six Co2 or more commonly known as carbon dioxide molecules and six H2O, or water molecules react to sunlight, which then forms one glucose molecule and six oxygen molecules. The role water plays in this is takes that water molecule and releases oxygen into the air in a form of oxygen …show more content…

One of these vulnerabilities is heat stress and how it affects the photosynthetic process. According to a study, “Photosynthesis is particularly sensitive to heat stress and recent results provide important new insights into the mechanisms by which moderate heat stress reduces photosynthetic capacity” (Sharkey). Heat stress can be highly inconvenient to the photosynthetic process since is can decrease the photosynthetic rate near to zero. What happens is “Moderate heat stress can stimulate dark reduction of plastoquinone and cyclic electron flow in the light” (Sharkey). This can be harmful to the plants as it can completely jeopardize the whole
