The movie “Boyhood”, and The Perks Of Being A Wallflower both share one main theme: Growing up, or in other words, the coming of age. In the movie, the main character, Mason, starts off as a little innocent boy. He has childish thoughts, like any kid would. For example, he asks his dad if he thinks magic is real. As the movie goes on, the scenes skip a few years each time, leaving Mason space to grow. As he gets older, he becomes less and less innocent, getting a better taste of life. At first, he looks at girls online in bikinis with his friends, and this is while he is still pretty young. He was so innocent that when there was a party at his house, all he did was sit in his room instead of participating. He even saw a girl getting raped in his room and did not think much about it, not really understanding what was going on until later. Though, as the story goes on, he starts losing his innocence, as he experiences love for the first time with Sam, wet dreaming about her and even learning about masturbation, just like how Mason was watching girls in bikinis on the Internet. Some time passes, and he starts actually participating in parties, getting stoned, and talking with others, demonstrating how much he grew up. Another example of him transitioning from innocence to experience is when he finally understood Michael’s poem. At first, he did not understand the poem at all. However, a few days passed, and he finally understood what he was talking about; how life becomes more and more depressing as you grow up. He was finally able to relate to it. Additionally, at some point, when he gets old enough, he ends up getting a sexual talk from his brother, just like how Mason one from his dad during his path to adulthood, which shows very well how they were old enough to finally get this
