“The Perils of Promise and Praise,” written by Carol Dweck was on the subject of how the right and wrong type of praise can affect children and their motivation to learn. Dweck is a psychologist who specifically studies how our mindset affects our behavior. She writes about how some students believe that their intellect is a fixed trait, whereas others believe it is developed over time. She says when kids are focused on improving their intellect, they do not fear how they will look to others. When you praise a child for being smart, they can believe that to be a natural trait that they cannot improve. This way of thinking can lead to the child having a fixed mindset. mindset, they are used to subjects being easy. When things get tough, they often want to give up or get really anxious about the challenge. Many people with a fixed mindset set will choose not to care. When a student has a growth mindset, they show effort in their given tasks. They also show active listening and ask questions. Dweck adds in some studies that show how fifth graders who were praised for intellect were affected versus children who were praised for effort. Students who were praised for intelligence were in a fixed mindset and preferred the easy routes. Students who were praised for effort, showed a growth mindset and enjoyed being challenged. They associated it with trying learn more as opposed to the other students who believed they could not learn and that they were not smart. When the students were challenged with problems, some were not honest or did not show their best efforts, while others improved. She says a better way to praise students is by showing them how they did, where they went right, and how they can improve next time. Another way of encouraging a student is by challenging them when something is coming easy to them. Once the children were taught that they could expand their minds, they were excited. One child quoted in the text says, “You mean I don’t have to be dumb?” (Dweck 11). This was the thought of a child who has believed all this time, that he could not be smart, when all it takes is motivation and practice. In conclusion, Dweck suggests that we can keep students confident by practicing the correct ways of praising their effort rather than their intellect.
In Carol Dweck’s article titled, “Brainology” Dweck discusses the different mindsets that students have about intelligence. Some where taught that each person had a set amount of intelligence, while others were trained that intelligence is something they could develop and increase over time. in Dweck’s article she writes, “ It is a belief that intelligence can be developed that opens students to a love of learning, a belief in the power of effort and constrictive, determined reactions to setbacks” (Dweck pg. 2). Dweck is talking about a growth mind-set in which is how students perceive the growth of knowledge and that no one person is born with a certain amount of intelligence, it too can be trained and developed over time. By introducing Dweck’s ideas of a growth mind-set to students, students will enjoy learning and be less devastated by setbacks, because they know they can develop intelligence. “A Modest Proposal” was written in 1729 by a satirical author by the name of Jonathan Swift. Swift studied at the University of Oxford and was also know for his popular writing in Gulliver’s Travel. The purpose for his satire “A Modest Proposal” was to enlighten the citizens of Ireland about their hardship and suffering. He informed them about their scares of food, money, and property, but provided a possible solution to their problem. To persuade the people Swift adopts a comforting and friendly tone to his audience for the people to react to his solution.
Meaning that when children grow up with praise such as “oh you must have been so smart to get an A on that test”, instead of “you must have worked really hard on that lesson”, children could take the praise to their intelligence the wrong way and think that since they are “smart” instead of their effort on a task which will cause them problems in the future and they might want to give up and quit. I have seen this first hand and this has actually happened to me before, so I know from experience that this could have a negative effect impact on a student not just students in elementary school but also adults who are going to college or young adults who are looking for a job. He makes a valid argument with good points, but he bases his opinions off of his high school experiences and the world is much different after high school. His idea of intellectual kids not being praised in society is false. This can be compared to the idea of social classes in society. The intellectual kids would be at the top of the social class ladder with the access to all the privileges.

When discussing the word hope, one must consider the core values by which the word works around. You could hope for financial success, world peace, or simply hope for some good out of your day. In 2006, Barack Obama wrote the political biography The Audacity of Hope to outline his core political and spiritual beliefs, as well as his opinions on different aspects of American culture. The Illinois senator divided the book into nine chapters, each concentrating on both his own and the United States’ successes and failures in local and state politics. While revealing great leadership attributes, life experiences, personal qualities and hard facts, largely in anecdotal method, Barack Obama offers realistic, wide and thoughtful responses to today’s current domestic controversies using artistic appeals, such as ethos, pathos and logos. Senator Obama also gives the audience an in-depth analysis of the key policies that need to be changed for both Democrats and Republicans, and delivers an inherent message to offer hope to anyone, regardless of background or experiences. In the prologue, he discusses in great detail virtually every major political issue facing the American electorate today, offering his opinions and possible strategies for reform. “My motivation in entering politics was to cut through decades of polarizing partisanship and develop a moderate, effective approach to our government.” (Barackopedia.org). Obama notes that this same impulse, an impulse of a secure, functional and sustainable administration, prompted him to write The Audacity of Hope.
What they have done to foster my motivation was the way they would praise me. Like for example in Dweck, Carol S. “Brainology”: Transforming Students’ Motivation to Learn. It claims that praise might tell them that being smart and talent is the most important thing and it’s what makes you valuable. That’s when parents or teacher make mistakes they praise them wrong and all they just do is build up children’s ego. Then when they do something wrong children think they 're less and it plays with their self-esteem. But that was not my case, though, nobody never made it seem to me like being smart and talented where the most important and that’s what made someone valuable. Previously, child-rearing experts believed that all praise enhanced children’s emotional and psychological well being (Brummelman et al., 2014). However, the present study highlights that giving different types of praises can impact the development of a child’s theory of intelligence and how adaptive their responses to challenges are. Hence, the quote by Ginott (1965): “Praise, like penicillin, must not be administered haphazardly.” Strengths of the current study Predominantly, experimental research was used to investigate how person and process praise shape children’s theory of intelligence, their subsequent motivation and achievement.
That question had me curious, which lead me to these questions: Is there a right or wrong way to praise? Does the way you praise a child make a difference? One of my personal goals as a third grade teacher is to help each one of the children leave my classroom knowing that they are special in their own unique way and that they have the power to conquer whatever obstacles the world throws at them. I will know to point out when a student is doing something good and showing improvement in their work even if it is not the best yet.
