Director Roland Emmerich’s 21st century adaptation of one the American Revolution through the production of The Patriot is a popular movie that would sum up information about the war through the eyes of Benjamin Martin and his struggles of being a single father with 7 children, especially with his eldest son, Gabriel. The movie, however, was quite lacking in its research on what actually happened during the 1700s. Even though the movie had its moments of quality camera work and beautiful scenes to show the emotions of certain characters, the historical inaccuracies shadows any part of the movie that was somewhat enjoyable. However, almost anyone can point out the dozens of mistakes the director and producer made when creating The Patriot. Main protagonist Benjamin Martin was apparently inspired by Francis Marion, Captain of the Continental Army during the revolution. Even though both men were in heavy usage of militia and guerilla warfare to defeat British tactics and win the war, the characters values and personalities were two total opposites. Benjamin is seen in the movie being kind to people of color and slaves in the war, specifically one that was enlisted into the army, and he made sure that he would be free after the war. Francis, on the other hand, was known to be racist, specifically in killing Cherokee Indians “for fun” and do horrible things to slaves. Another inaccuracy would be the character’s abilities themselves. The whole Martin family were sharpshooters. In the scene where Benjamin took his two sons, who look to be around 8 or 9, to attack a whole squad of trained British soldiers in order to save Gabriel, the two boys were given muskets to shoot and kill the soldiers.
