From the very beginning of The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood constructs the world of Gilead around a central metaphor: the palimpsest. By enforcing rigid controls, Gilead has wiped away almost all forms of female freedom—reproductive rights, independence, and the choice of when and how to die—with considerable success. However, like the faint outlines of older texts on a palimpsest, hints of all these constructs and desires linger on. Atwood uses the extended metaphor of a palimpsest to illustrate freedom’s dual nature: while it can be easily eroded by fear and exploitation, it cannot be truly eradicated from the human spirit or society. Atwood sets up the extended metaphor of palimpsest in the book’s first pages, laying the foundation for her exploration of freedom and love’s true nature. Gilead denies Handmaids make-up and lotion and forces them to wear restrictive uniforms and veils. It bans contraception and turns sex into the soulless act of “fucking” that “has nothing to do with passion or love or romance” and “is serious business” based only on reproduction with the banal, emotionless Ceremony (94). It reduces marriage to a state function, removing all choice, even from the “privileged” Wives, and subjugates women who have “sinned” in the past by turning them into vessels given to high-ranking Commanders as slaves to bear children. In the book’s first scene, the narrator describes the gymnasium where she is held, saying “I thought I could smell, faintly, like an afterimage, the pungent scent of sweat…the [dance] music lingered on, a palimpsest of unheard sound” (3). Even in the re-education center for captured women, Gilead cannot completely erase the undertones of sex, passion, and music, the very things it set out to... ... middle of paper ... ...ing beneath Gilead’s artificial surface. In The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood warns the reader that freedoms enjoyed by today’s society have enemies, and that they can easily be, have, and are being taken away. The original writing on the palimpsest can easily be scraped away, but live on underneath the surface, undermining the new message. Again and again, Atwood reveals that freedom and the desire for freedom—over sexuality, autonomy, and life and death—cannot be erased. Human beings, in Atwood’s conception, thrive on freedom of love, intimacy, and death, and no amount of social control or authoritarian rule can totally undermine human attempts to live fully. All Gilead’s authoritarian controls fall in one way or another by the end of the novel. Gilead sets out to fulfill impossible goals by stamping out whole swathes of human nature, and, inevitably, fails.

Within freedom should come security. Within security should come freedom. But in Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood, it seems as though there is no in between. Atwood searches throughout the novel for a medium between the two, but in my eyes fails to give justice to a woman’s body image. Today's society has created a fear of beauty and sexuality in this image. It is as though a beautiful woman can be just that, but if at the same time, if she is intelligent and motivated within acting as a sexual being, she is thought of as exploiting herself and her body. Atwood looks for a solution to this problem, but in my eyes fails to do so.
Margaret Atwood's renowned science fiction novel, The Handmaid's Tale, was written in 1986 during the rise of the opposition to the feminist movement. Atwood, a Native American, was a vigorous supporter of this movement. The battle that existed between both sides of the women's rights issue inspired her to write this work. Because it was not clear just what the end result of the feminist movement would be, the author begins at the outset to prod her reader to consider where the story will end. Her purpose in writing this serious satire is to warn women of what the female gender stands to lose if the feminist movement were to fail. Atwood envisions a society of extreme changes in governmental, social, and mental oppression to make her point.
In Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Handmaids Tale’, we hear a transcribed account of one womans posting ‘Offred’ in the Republic of Gilead. A society based around Biblical philosophies as a way to validate inhumane state practises. In a society of declining birth rates, fertile women are chosen to become Handmaids, walking incubators, whose role in life is to reproduce for barren wives of commanders. Older women, gay men, and barren Handmaids are sent to the colonies to clean toxic waste.

This is what most people think and assume, but they're wrong. Look at the world today and in the recent past, and there are not only many situations that have ALMOST become a Gilead, but places that have been and ARE Gileadean societies. We're not in Kansas any more, Dorothy!

The Handmaid's Tale is a dystopian novel in which Atwood creates a world which seems absurd and near impossible. Women being kept in slavery only to create babies, cult like religious control over the population, and the deportation of an entire race, these things all seem like fiction. However Atwood's novel is closer to fact than fiction; all the events which take place in the story have a base in the real world as well as a historical precedent. Atwood establishes the world of Gilead on historical events as well as the social and political trends which were taking place during her life time in the 1980's. Atwood shows her audience through political and historical reference that Gilead was and is closer than most people realize.
Within every literary work there lies a resounding truth which perfectly displays the dangers of a broken world or society. In her novel The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood uses different ideas in her novel to convey how passivity in a broken society has detrimental effects for everyone. Throughout the novel, it is displayed that in such a dystopian society, nothing can progress in the right direction if nobody has the courage to defy the system. Through Atwood’s context given throughout her text, her stance on passivity is clearly shown as one that urges others to stand and fight instead of becoming submissive to a fragmented society. Only then can there be hope to restore the future.
The setting of The Handmaid’s Tale – known as Gilead – is a totalitarian government, originally based on Old Testament patriarchy. This structure forbids rival loyalties or parties, so all loyalty must be for the group of men that govern the State. Such a structure means that women are assigned ‘roles’ according to their biological ‘usefulness’.
Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian novel that tells the story of a women and her struggles to survive in a totalitarian regime, presented in the first person narrative. The story takes place in a fictitious world called Gilead, where a dictatorship rules the people through oppression, fear and strict religious guidelines. Atwood wrote this dystopian novel as a social commentary in which she argues that all events included in her story are all real events that have occured in history at one point or another. In her Letter to the Reader, Atwood writes, “The thing to remember is that there is nothing new about the society depicted in the Handmaid’s Tale except the time and place. All of the things that I have written about have- as noted in the “Historical Notes” at the end- been done before, more than once.” There is plenty of truth in Atwood’s words and many of us would agree with her idea that “if it happened once then it can happen again,” which she also writes in her Letter to the Reader. Yet, I don’t believe this to be completely true. Humans have made many mistakes in history that have killed or oppressed many people, yet we live in a better world then we ever have, which concludes that we have learned from many of our mistakes. Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale is out date and therefore it’s relevancy is as well. The tale is a huge exaggeration meant to entertain and warn rather than to believe. In addition when held up to my current situation to see relation would be completely overlooking and underestimating the freedoms and liberties that I have today.
The Handmaid's Tale presents an extreme example of sexism and misogyny by featuring the complete objectification of women in the society of Gilead. Yet by also highlighting the mistreatment of women in the cultures that precede and follow the Gileadean era, Margaret Atwood is suggesting that sexism and misogyny are deeply embedded in any society and that serious and deliberate attention must be given to these forms of discrimination in order to eliminate them.
There are two kinds of freedom, “freedom from and freedom to” (31) throughout Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. Freedom from is a negative liberty that involves external restriction to a person’s actions. On the other hand there is freedom to, a positive liberty the one can act upon their own free will. The two different categories of freedom are discussed and debated through a feminist view point. We explore and try to understand the way in which the difference between “freedom from” and “freedom to” is applied to females in society. Margaret Atwood sheds light on two concepts that are intertwined; fertility and motherhood. Nevertheless in Gilead these notions are often viewed as separate. The Republic State of Gilead views women as child-bearers and nothing more. In Gilead, these women are known as handmaids, who’s function in society is to produce children for barren females of a high status. Gilead also prohibits the handmaids from being mothers to their previously born children, meaning before Gilead was created, for instance, Offred, who is separated from her daughter. Thus it is evident that Margaret Atwood generates a state that views birth only as growth in population rather than the beginning of a relationship between mother and child.
