The Horror Features and Messages in "The Hole" and "The Others"

The first depictions of the horror genre appeared in the late 1890's. The horror genre is supposed to elicit a negative emotional response from the viewers, playing on their fears. The horror genre can sometime overlap with other genres such as fantasy, thriller and supernatural. Horror films usually deal with people's, nightmares, fears, disgusts and the fear of the unknown. Plots within the horror genre include the intrusion of an evil force, event of personage in their everyday lives. Both "The Hole" and "The Others" are classic horror films made during the 20th century. Both texts have many different messages that include overcoming your deepest fears which comes through the characters and storyline.

"The Hole's" message that comes through the story is that you shouldn't bury your deepest fears as they will come back to bite you. The movie represents this as a hole; someone's deepest fears. For example the older brother Dane has a fear of his father, as a result, his father comes out of the hole and Dane has to face his fear. This movie also has a very similar message and themes to "The Hole". In "The Others" the mother (Grace) is repressing the fact that she and her two children are dead, this is a representation of someone that is repressing the a fear. The mother, Grace gets a few hints throughout the entirety of the film, such as when one of the housemaids says "Sometimes the world of the living gets mixed up with the world of the dead" and "Sooner or later they will find you". At the ending of the movie Grace figures out that she and her two children are dead through the "intruders" that supposedly talk to them through a medium. The ending of the movie shows the mother facing her fears. I believe that some of the themes of "The Others" are sacrifice, love, discovery and
