The selection series are set in the future where there is a monarchy. Every time a prince is eligible to marry there would be a contest called the selection. In previous books the reader would have found out that America Singer gets picked for the selection, and soon falls for Prince Maxon. Even though America’s life has changed completely at the castle, she is still independent and outspoken. America frequently struggles to control her words and actions, and she gets into trouble often. The theme of the third book in the selection series, The One, by Kiera Cass is to be careful of what you say because your words can get you into trouble. For example, America was discussing with King Clarkson about how America was able to get the Italians to want an alliance. King Clarkson was accusing her, and America quickly shoot back, “ ‘Maybe if you were simply more welcoming, you'd have your alliance with Italy years ago’ “ (Cass 204). In this scene America questions the King's ability to gain an alliance with another country. She makes the way he does business look pathetic and useless, and the King will not tolerate that. The King thinks he does everything right. The King’s response to America’s comment was, “ ‘Watch. Your. Mouth ‘ “ (Cass 204). Cass uses short choppy sentences to illustrate the tone the King was using. Cass also uses the shortened sentences to put America in her place with the forceful response. While this is a good point because America does into trouble a lot, the reader could fail to account for the reasons why America is in trouble. What if the King and the other selected girls have bad judgment? America may be speaking thoughtlessly, but she could be right about what she is saying. For instance, when America was being scolded by the King after the convicting, Maxon is the one who steps in to defend that what America says is right. He says, “ ‘When she suggested that people defend themselves, the public responded positively’ “ (Cass 182). The King may have responded the wrong way to America’s decisions. If the crowds are responding positively to her actions, then maybe the were right choices. Many still may argue that America should watch her words because they are still getting her in trouble with the King. The rules may not be right, but she needs to follow them because he still is the King. America needs to be careful of what she says because her words can get her into trouble. Be careful of what you say because your words can get you into trouble. America’s responses often get her into trouble with the King, friends, and in front of the public. Cass also uses the structure of sentences to make America’s situations worse. The novel, The One, by Kiera Cass supports the theme because there are several points in the book when America gets into trouble with her words.
