The word Bible is taken from the Greek word "ta biblia or the books" and became the foundation of Judaism and Christianity. The Old Testament or the Tanakh is the first and the oldest section of the Holy Bible with the New Testament added at a later date. The Old Testament consists of several individual books written, compiled and edited by various authors over a period of centuries. These several books were divided into three groups with the first group being the Torah, the Teachings or the Law, Neviim, or the Prophets, is the second group and Ketubim, or the Writings, is the third group. The first letter in of each of these divisions such as T for Torah, N for Neviim and K for Ketubim makes an acronym of the name TaNaKh. The actual number …show more content…

The Supplementary Hypothesis claims that, from 700 to 400BC, there were just three different groups of authors the Deuteronomist, Yahwist, Priestly and Redactor sources that wrote the five books of the Torah. With the Fragmentary Hypothesis the belief is, from 1003 to 716BC, a collection of different laws along with various authors who put together the narratives of the Torah. Of these three different theories of who wrote the Torah it is the Source Hypothesis or the Documentary Hypothesis that is the oldest and most detailed. The Documentary Hypothesis concluded that, from 850 to 200BC, there were four different groups authors the Jahwist, Elohist, Priestly, Deuteronomist and Redactor sources who wrote the five books of the Torah. More information concerning this subject can be found in the following
Later around 792 BCE, the writing prophets come about with the powerful speaker Amos. Amos says a bunch of things that no one wants to hear such as the downfall of Israel’s Northern Kingdom and the death of the King. Then he really upsets everyone by saying that Israel will be sent into exile.

The Old Testament and the Bible itself has been studied extensively for centuries. Archeologists and Scholars have labored and pondered over texts trying to decipher its clues. It does not matter how many times the Old Testament has been studied there will always be something new to learn about it or the history surrounding it. In the book Reading the Old Testament: an Introduction, the author Lawrence Boadt presents us with a few different authors of the Old Testament that used different names for God and had a unique insight into the texts. These four sources are titled P for priests, E for Elohim, J for Jehovah, and Y for Yahweh (95). These four unique sources help us realize that there is more than one author of the Pentateuch. These authors took the text and adapted for their culture. This independent source is used by scholars to help gain insight into what was behind the texts of the bible so we are not left with an incomplete picture of what went into the creation of the bible. Julius Wellhausen used these four sources to publish a book to able us to better understand the sources and to give it credibility with the Protestant scholars at the time (Boadt 94). These sources that is independent of the bible as in the DVD Who Wrote the Bible? and the Nova website aide in shedding light on the history that surrounded the writers who wrote the text and what inspired them to write it in the first place. The DVD shows the discovery of The Dead Sea Scrolls and the extensive history of the texts and all its sources in an effort to try to find exactly who wrote the bible (Who Wrote). These scrolls have aided scholars immensely by giving us some of the oldest known manuscripts of the bible in the world today. It shows that the bible w...
“Exploration of Similarities in Religious Texts: A Further Look at the Koran, the Tanakh and the New Testament”
The most highly referenced and revered as sacred are The King James Version, considered a masterpiece of English literature, The Tanakh, or Hebrew Bible, The Aprocrypha, the books believed left out of some bibles, The Vulgate, the Latin Bible used for centuries by the Roman Catholic religion, and The Septuagint, the first ancient Greek translation of the Tanakh (Geisler and Nix 15, McCallum 4). The Bible is considered a sacred text by three major world religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Many believers consider it to be the literal truth. Others treat it with great respect, but believe that it was written by human beings and, thus is often contradictory in its tenets.
It contains sixty-six smaller books, and those books are divided into two different parts, called the Old Testament and the New Testament (“Fast Facts about the Bible”). The Old Testament has thirty-nine books, and even those books are divided into sections. The first five books of the Bible make up the Pentateuch, which contains the laws that the early Israelites had to live by. The next group of books are the Historical books, which tell the stories of many different people that Christians look up to. After those come the books of Poetry, and the Major and Minor Prophets. In the New Testament, there are twenty-seven books, which are also made up of different parts. The first four books in the New Testament are different accounts of the Gospel of Jesus, which tells of His life and ministry on Earth. Those are followed by the Church’s history, and Paul’s letters to the churches from that time period. And, the last book of the Bible is a part of its own theme, the prophecy. It depicts the future events of the world, and what will happen during the end
Before Ezekiel began his prophecy there was widespread conflict in the Northern and Southern kingdoms of Israel at the hands of the Assyrians, Egyptians and the Babylonians. In 597 BCE the Babylonians took control of Jerusalem with members of royalty, nobles, craftsmen and smiths being sent into exile. In 2 Kings 24:14 it is stated that “only the poorest people in the land” escaped exile, though this is likely to be an exaggeration as people living in rural areas more than likely survived relatively unharmed (Darr, 2001). The living conditions of the exiled people have been widely debated. The exiled community was permitted to preserve its language, religion and internal governance by the elders; however they bore the scars of the previous wars and of being deported and some were forced into labour (Barton & Muddiman, 2001).
After seventy years of exile the Jews were allowed to return to Jerusalem. Most of them gave up this option and elected to stay in Babylon. Those who stay in Babylon became ...
The book of Isaiah is presumed by some to have been solely written by the prophet Isaiah around 740-700 B.C. during the downfall of Israel, while others believe that multiple people who could have all been named “Isaiah” wrote the book (Ross). While the decline of Israel had disastrous effects on the kingdom such as the ten tribes of Israel taken into captivity and exiled by the Assyrians in 733 B.C (“Map of the Assyrian”), it also brought about prophets rising up to write the prophetic books such as Hosea, Amos, and Micah (Walton). Eventually the Israelites and Isaiah returned home around 723 B.C. and began to rebuild the temple, and their kingdom (“Map of the Assyrian”). During this time, the author felt a call from God that he needed to prophesy to His chosen people, to bring them back to Him for they had fallen away from Him, and to remind them of His sovereignty.
Mystery of the New Testament The New Testament is a part of the Christian Canon, which is inclusive of the Old and New Testament. The New Testament consists of twenty-seven books, and is the foundation of the Christian religion. The New Testament has set the bar for Christianity as a religion, but many questions surround the New Testament. These questions surrounding the New Testament have continuously sparked controversy.
In Horace Miner’s Body Ritual Among the Nacirema, Miner demonstrates how the Nacirema’s culture and performed rituals are poorly understood. The Nacirema, whose roots originate from North America, are depicted as a group of people whose rituals revolve around the human body. The natives who belong to this group find the human body unpleasant. Consequently, the Nacirema are strongly in favour of seeking help from practitioners in order to improve the way they feel in their bodies. This specific group of people value substances such as magical potions in order to help their bodies recover. The Nacirema who are ill go to a temple called the latipso and seek the medicine men for help. They also see seek for other practitioners such as the holy-mouth-man
The book of Hebrews is a unique portion of the Bible because it is written as though it were a letter, directed at people the writer may have known. However, the book targets a seemingly broad audience of those without faith and also those that could be described as believers that have experienced persecution. A salient message within Hebrews is that people must persevere when they feel persecuted because Jesus Christ is their salvation, regardless of anything else that is happening in the people’s lives. An emphasis on the greatness of Jesus and his role as a mediator between God and those on Earth is dominant throughout the chapters and verses.
earliest copy was found in 400 BC. This is compared to the New Testament that
The bible is more than history though, it is a map that leads us to the words of God, and the Pentateuch especially tells us the story of God and his plan for humanity. Just like all history though, it has to be questioned and examined in order to have a strong belief that the stories passed down through generations is true. The Pentateuch’s history can be analyzed by dates, genealogy, archeology, and traditions. The writing of the Pentateuch spanned over many centuries, so in effort to present the history The Book of Deuteronomy will be the base. Deuteronomy is said to be written around 621 B.C., making it the time of Joshua.
