The Negative Effects of Hubris

Donald Trump, an egotistical businessman, thinks so highly of himself that he has now become a joke in the eyes of the world. Trump has created his false self-image due to his excessive pride, called hubris. Hubris causes people to have mistaken identities, arrogance, and can lead to their downfall. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus, a prideful warrior, tries to return home with his crew after fighting in the Trojan War. Odysseus’ hubris ends up leading to many problems for himself and his crew. Hubris played a negative role in The Odyssey due to Odysseus revealing his identity to Polyphemus, not telling his crew about Aeolus’ bag of winds, and staying with Circe for a year. Excessive pride caused Odysseus to reveal his identity to Polyphemus, which led to many problems. Odysseus and his crew had just managed to escape from the Cyclops, Polyphemus, after driving a stake into his eye. But then, Odysseus told the blinded Cyclops his identity by shouting, “Cyclops – if any man on the face of the earth should ask you who blinded you, shamed you so- say Odysseus, raider of cities, he gouged out your eye, Laertes’ son who makes his home in Ithaca” (9, 558-562). Hubris allegedly causes great success, but in reality, hubris leads to many mistakes instead. Odysseus carelessly telling Polyphemus all of his personal information through his enormous pride angered Poseidon, Polyphemus’ father, who ended up killing Odysseus’ entire crew and delaying Odysseus for 10 long years. If Odysseus would have suppressed his pride, his crew might have been able to return to Ithaca. But Odysseus’ hubris prevented everyone’s safe arrival back home, and resulted in a lot of suffering for many people. So pride led to many problems for Odyssey and his crew.... ... middle of paper ... ...let Penelope and Telemachus suffer for an entire year out of his own greed and pride. If Odysseus had returned sooner, he could have prevented additional damage from the suitors to his wife, son, and home. Odysseus’ hubris blinded him, so that he lost sight of what really mattered. Hubris had a negative effect in The Odyssey due to Odysseus giving away his identity, keeping secrets from his crew, and losing his passion to get home. Just as Hubris caused Odysseus to make numerous poor decisions, hubris inhibits many people today from making wise choices. Hubris makes people have a false perfect image of themselves, which leads to arrogance and a distorted reality. These negative traits that come with hubris usually result in people’s pain and suffering. People need to start living more grateful and humble lives, so that humanity will actually progress and prosper.
