It can be said that reality television offers a superficial reality, which takes away from the cultural values of society. However, to what extent is this statement a fact or an exaggeration? One could say that reality television offers a glimpse of what life looks like for people of power, royalty or wealth. This provides a daily view of what it may look like to live like these people. Thus, this glimpse is aimed to strictly entertain and not deceive. On the other hand, most of these lives do not offer a real sense of a “normal” life. More often than not they offer a false sense of reality that relies on wealth and high status within society. Therefore, do television shows give people the wrong idea of what society should look like? As a parent …show more content…
Therefore, these bombardments of false realities pose a threat to our cultural values. Since these shows only portray individuals of power, wealth and royalty people assume this is what is expected of them. This creates a negative image of the expected cultural values. They begin to idolize the decisions that the celebrities make and consider them justified. The negative impacts of the shows can be seen as people have begun to mimic the celebrities within the shows. Thus, these shows aim to sell this unpractical lifestyle as desirable. Additionally, the name “Reality Television” demonstrates how this form of media tries to sell what “reality” looks like. However, the lifestyles portrayed in the shows are typically as far away from reality as possible. A typical American reality would be one that portrays an educated person that has a daily job and potentially a family to surround them. Therefore, these shows in no way represent the “American reality” and thus have a negative impact on …show more content…
Thus, the people who tend to watch these shows cannot help but follow their lifestyle choices. As a father of a young girl I would never want my daughter to watch a show such as “Keeping Up With the Kardashian’s”. In the “Kardashian Show” the females rarely work and place a great emphasis on beauty, partying and wealth. Just based on the name it tells any viewer that this is the expected lifestyle and they need to “keep up”. This could have severe impacts on a young girl who thinks this lifestyle is normal. Consequently, an impressionable girl might think it is acceptable not to work and live a life a partying. This is just a glimpse of the harsh realities of what these shows offer people
The shows portrays a melting pot of each character lives with money, sex, social media, and relationships unfiltered and toxic, yet irrelevant to the real –world. Another key point is the exploitation of the television world and the millions of viewers, that it’s okay sociably to exemplify deviant behaviors in real –life. Also, culturally and sociably, the reality show creates a bigger problem as the platform provided for the cast is characterized in a negative state. On the negative side, this creates the illusion to act in like manner, from the deviant behavior portrayed on
...sold worldwide. This makes teenagers and other young adults do unruly things to try and gain their own spot in the limelight. Even though reality television is supposed to be this great source of entertainment and may make us happy at the moment, if not watched carefully and really thought about it could ruin someone’s life with its negative values.
How Reality TV affects the audience and the characters who were participating into it? Does it really give knowledge to people who were watching and supporting? Or is it just the sake of money and exposing their appearance on television? When it comes to watching television, people at home can choose which types of program they want to want for many reasons. Some people look to television for inspiration; others want to be kept informed about their surroundings and the world. In the article entitled, “Reality TV and Culture” by Jack Perry, he argues, there are some good points to how reality television are formed and offered. Perry explains that, not all of the shows are designed to encourage and promote dangerous and unrealistic. However,
Reality based television has a broad landscape ranging from competitive game-like shows to programs following the daily lives of a group of people. Every major network now has some form of reality programming because the genre’s shows are high in viewership and require low costs for production. The genre is appealing to viewers because it provides them with a first-hand look into the lives of everyday people, which allows them to observe social behavior that helps them determine what is appropriate or not (Tyree, 2011, p. 397). Since the majority of modern reality stars start out as unknowns, frequent viewers of reality programming believed that fame is obtainable if they appear on a popular show (Mendible, 2004). According to Mendible’s evaluation of the genre in the article Humiliation, Subjectivity, and Reality TV, people enjoy reality programs beca...
...s of image, misleading, and popularity have influenced the thoughts of people who watch reality shows. To me reality shows such as jersey shore, the housewives series have influenced as to how i see people who have the money are stuck up and have no idea what is really important to the world. That alot of Americans were embarassed to have those people represent the United States. I am embarrased that we as Americans, wach reality shows of other people who are no diffrent from we are and give them so much attenion for simply being broadcasted for misleading me how easy life is for them than for those who try to make a difference or that just beacause how popular they are with the younger genreation. We as people should give the image of trying to make our world better place for he not so forunate bu ae living pretty well, but for those who are not fortunae at all.
Keeping Up with the Kardashians is a stereo-typical reality show that focuses on attention grabbing antics and high impact drama. When “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” made their debut, it brought something new to the table of reality TV causing the viewers to go wild. While the Kardashians audience consists of middle age to adult women, there are still a large amount of fans that are men. Many of the characters in the Kardashian family are known for their vain, arrogant and high strung personalities. Stereo typical portrayals of how women should react are shown throughout the show. Multiple viewers continues to embrace the illusions that all women are cranky and vain, only interested in living a luxurious lifestyle.
Reality programs have dominated television networks since their rise in popularity began in the early 1990s with MTV’s The Real World. The reality genre quickly gained viewership as it redefined the formulaic set up of televisions shows from the past. Reality television has infiltrated television because networks prefer lower budgets for their programs that will also generate high ratings (Hasinoff, 2008). People watch reality shows because they are intrigued by the seemingly “real” drama with ordinary people as characters (Dubrofsky, 2006). Now at its peak of growth, reality television evokes ideas of social order and cultural norms to its audiences, while renewing racial stereotypes in modern society (Mendible, 2004). My purpose of the review of literature is to examine and analyze reality television’s influence on people’s perceptions of cultural roles and racial stereotypes.
In today 's society, television is one of the greatest entertainment, and currently reality televisions have become the most commonly watched television programs. Reality tv, beside being entertaining , it has effected society in a negative
Television does much more then entertains its viewers. Reality shows has given the American people a bad reputation. The reality shows that Americans watch every day are also shown all over the world. For example, shows like Jersey Shore, The Real House Wives, Keeping up with the Kardashians, Hunny Boo Boo, and Duck Dynasty is representing Americans. The rest of the world sees Americans as childish, aggressive, spoiled, rich, dumb, disgusting, or/and as red necks.
What pleasure do you get from watching a group of people humiliate themselves in the name of television? Media both in the UK and around. the world seems to have "discovered" that so-called "reality" shows are. very profitable, resulting in a growing string of such shows in recent years. years.
Reality Television has changed television in a way that no one could have imagined. Being the one of the most talked about genre in history, it is seen by millions of viewers. It has more ratings than any other kind of show (Breyer 16). From its start, there have been many Reality Television shows. Shows like The Real World, Survivor, Big Brother, and Jersey Shore. All of these give off a negative portrayal of reality. While Americans watch these shows, it seems that the show is real life, but in reality, no pun intended, before the show is even filmed, it’s written, edited, and produced (Breyer 21). Writers humiliate and degrade people just for the plot of the show, making their private lives public (Breyer 16).
Reality television has become nearly unavoidable and American society is more affected by reality television than they realize. Society can be shaped from reality TV in many ways like the way people act, and also the way people can perceive a problem. I never really could have thought just some of the stuff we watch on television like Big Brother, could be impacting us in any way. I always thought the reason people said reality television is bad for us was because we would get addicted and not want to leave the couch. I started to research reality television by looking up what could be the potential impact and I was shocked by the results that were good and bad. Coming from the article by John Perritano he says “Many say reality TV has put
Reality television has changed the world today by encouraging violent behavior, elevate imprudent personalities, and depict woman of their values. Many reality TV shows are driving young kids to be driven by money and fame. Our reality television make us seem ignorant to other countries. Young viewers of these reality TV shows do not realize that most of the shows are often scripted and are not “real”. Although the programming of reality TV can be highly entertaining, it is important to be aware of the messages, and values that these shows often portray. Since reality TV has such a strong foothold in American pop culture, it is likely not going anywhere or changing its content any time

The creation of television broadcasting changed the way the world interacted, making it one of the most successful and important innovation. The Entertainment industry brought Reality TV to America, changing and evolving along with the changes in society.
