Music is a powerful art form that can motivate and change one’s emotions and mood. Listening to music for relaxation is common among many students to counteract the effects of stress or anxiety while completing difficult academic tasks. Some studies supporting this technique have shown that background music promotes cognitive performance while other studies have shown that listening to music while engaged in complex cognitive tasks can impair performance. The aim of the project is to research the following topic, “Does listening to music while working distract you?” The main reason why I chose this topic was due to being a victim to music when it comes to studying and interested to know the effects it has. A survey that I conducted aimed at students and teachers revealed that seventy nine percent of them regularly listen to music while working. This indicated that other people besides me indulged in music listening whilst studying. Music has the ability to calm one down, leading to more conscientious studying, elevating ones mood, motivating one to stay focused and studying for longer periods of time. Many websites and articles I found show and prove that music in general can help with stress, anxiety, vision, speech, memory, sleep and depression.

I get to relax when I am stressed out, or it gets me pumped up before I do something that would be hard for me or that would need a lot of work for me to do.
