The foster care program has become such a huge thing worldwide. It can help to provide children homes and families which they would not be able to find otherwise. Foster care programs also offer temporary food, domestic care for children from birth to age eighteen. While programs laws and rules are different from state to state, typically foster care is used by children 's welfare services when a child is identified as having been orphaned, abandoned, abused, or neglected. At the same time though it has a negative impact. The foster care system hurts the structure of the family unit which has existed for centuries. They weren’t the best living situations but they were better off then where they were living beforehand. Then in 1853, Charles Loring Brace introduced his idea of foster care system and how rural children should go be fostered at farmland house because of all the homeless children on the street in New York City (Chittom). After this that is when the government stepped in and tried to help out the foster care system. Slowly states in the U.S started adding laws about foster care. In 1912, Teddy Roosevelt created the Children’s Bureau which is under the Department of Health, which expanded to assist in a variety of issues related to families and children, including adoption and foster care (Chittom). According to the website Children’s Rights, they discuss about foster care and the amount of people within the system. In 2014, there were approximately 650,000 children in the foster care system. The average age for a child within the foster care system is nine years old. Children within the programs can stay in there until they are eighteen years old. They say about 22,000 people age out of foster care and if they do, they more accessible to being homeless, unemployment, and/or in jail (Foster Care).
