It might seem like “ The Mustache” by Robert Cormier and “Growing Up” by Gary Soto are very different kinds of stories. One is about a boy visiting his grandma and one is about a girl staying home while her family is on a vacation. But if you look at it, you will see that both stories share a common theme, Adulthood. In both stories, it tells a short story about how two teenagers wanting to move to the next stage of their life and becoming an adult.

Firstly, In the story “Mustache” the main character (Mike) problem is that he has to visit his grandma. In the story we are told that Mike has to visit his grandma to prove responsibility to his parent, he doing this because he wants people to give him a new perspective as an adult and not a kid anymore, but as he visit his grandma he realized he wasn't ready for the responsibility and as soon as he goes home he shaves off his mustache. While in the story “Growing Up” the main character (Maria) is staying home for a few days as her family goes on a vacation. While for Maria in “Growing Up” thinks she is too old and doesn't have any time to spend with her family and found them boring to hang out with, and wants to hang out with her friend and would rather live by herself. But when the story end they both have a taste of reality and regret their decision. Some small difference is that they both have different background and cultures, Mike is a rich American boy while Maria is a poor Mexican girl who feels poverty stroking, and both of them are different
