The movie, The Giver, is better than the book because it contains more action than the book describes and it’s very exciting and intense. Everything about the movie was perfectly put together which made the movie a great one to watch. There is also a moral to the movie which I think is “Stand up for what you believe in.” I think this is a great moral and goes well with the movie because it shows that even if the whole world turns on you, as long as you believe in yourself, you can achieve almost anything. I also like the fact that it’s a futuristic kind of movie; it makes it unique. He is also referred to as the Receiver of Memory. Chief Elder (Meryl Streep) is the Leader of the community. She is in charge of everyone in the community and makes all the rules. Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) is the main character in the Giver. He is an Eleven at the beginning of the film and turns in a Twelve when he is selected to be the next Receiver of Memory during the ceremony of Twelve. Father (Alexander Skarsgard) works at the Nurturing Center for newchildren. He is the adoptive father of Jonas and Lily and he is married to Mother. Mother (Katie Holmes) works in the Department of Law and Order. She is the adoptive mother of Jonas and Lily and she is married to Father. Fiona (Odeya Rush) is the best friend of Jonas and Asher. During the Ceremony of Twelve, she is assigned to be a Caretaker of the Old. Asher (Cameron Monhagan) is the best friend of Jonas and Fiona. During the Ceremony of Twelve, he is assigned to be a Drone Pilot. Rosemary (Taylor Swift) is the Giver’s daughter and was assigned to be the next Receiver of Memory after him. Have you ever read a book and watched its movie and thought that the movie was nothing like the book? The Giver’s story was not adapted well onto the big screen. There were many changes that were made, some of which completely altered the whole course of the storyline. For example, Fiona working at the Nurturing Center instead the House of the Old and the characters taking injections instead of pills also changed the way Jonas acted especially towards Fiona throughout the entire movie Some of the many trivial changes that were made did not affect the movie as much.
Imagine a community that you live took away your personal rights; the things that you know and even the way that you think. This is happening to a boy named Jonas not only him but also the inhabitants of Jonas’s community. In the book The Giver Jonas and his community is living with no personal rights. I believe that the inhabitants of Jonas’s community and Jonas should be given personal rights. The community should be given personal rights because they can learn from their mistakes, to have memory and to have emotions. Those are the reasons why I believe that the community should be given personal rights.
Lois Lowry’s book “The Giver” is about a community that has no flaws and everything is very controlled. They have no good or bad memories they just live their lives doing the jobs they were assigned. One day, Jonas, the new receiver, had an idea to release the memories back into the community. The story was later turned into a film and had some similarities, but the director of the movie departed from Lowry’s original story in a number of ways. By examining the different tones and the changes in a few of the characters, it's clear that the film departs from the story.
The novel, The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is an everlasting story that shows the importance of individuality. This novel is about a young boy named Jonas who was elected as the Receiver of Memories, a person who is given the memories from the world that existed before their current society, Sameness. In this society there is no individualism. People can not choose who to marry, or what they want to do for a living. Over time Jonas becomes more and more wise, and realizes that the supposedly perfect community actually has some very dark and negative aspects. The author, Lois Lowry is a 76-year-old writer who focuses her writing on helping struggling teenagers become individuals. Lowry had a very tragic childhood. After both of her parents were separated and killed in the middle of a war, she was devastated and the only way she was able to block and forget all of the horrifying things that were happening, were books (Lowry). “My books have varied in content… Yet it seems… that all of them deal with the same general theme: the importance of human connections,” Lowry explained in her autobiography. In the novel The Giver, Lois Lowry uses the literary elements symbolism, foreshadowing, and imagery to express the theme: importance of an individual.

In The Giver, Lois Lowry depicts a society that has been sheltered from all “bad” in the world and disguises murder, emotions and even death by renaming them, hiding them, and divulging only partial truths. In doing so, the lies of the government and community are masked, and given a new name: equality. However, within this society, a minority of the population receives this unseen reality. These individuals alone holds the ability to see beyond the illusion of perfection,
If you cannot remember the pain in life, you will not feel the pleasure in living. If you do not feel the loss of losing someone close to you, you never felt the love. If you do not know what is wrong, you will not know what is right. Yet, the people who live in Jonas’s community, presented by the book The Giver, by Lois Lowry, have lived peacefully without all the pain, suffering, loss, and wrongdoings. Everything was just…perfect. But soon Jonas realizes the truth: You really cannot live a good life without pain; the pain makes the other things in life worth living for. Once the truth is uncovered by Jonas, he figures out even more secrets that ruin the image he has of the perfect community he lives in. Basically, he does not see it as this perfect place he grew up in, anymore. This ‘utopian’ community is definitely not utopian because no one here can precisely express themselves, the people have adapted to ‘sameness’, and they perform inhuman tasks, which all add up to a less-than-perfect society.
In the novel the Giver had a high honor, they needed him to make important decisions and give them advice so they respected highly “The man corrected. ‘Honor.’ he said firmly. ‘I have great honor. So will you. But you will find that that is not the same as power’” (pg.106). The Receiver of Memory had high honor, but not much power because all he could do was to give advice to the other Elders, but in the movie Jonas’s mom didn’t tell him that he was honored and wasn’t as proud instead she was a bit worried unlike the book “‘you’ve been greatly honored,’ his mother said. ‘Your father and I are very proud’” (pg.84).
In The Giver, by Lois Lowry, the reader is left with an uncertain ending about what happens to the main character of the story, Jonas, and his little friend, Gabriel. The plot of a story usually ends with a resolution, where the conflict of the story is resolved; however, this is clearly not the case with The Giver. It is not possible to be completely certain on the ending of this book by reading this story alone; however, it is possible to gather the evidence and assume what likely occurred in the ending of The Giver. One cannot be sure on what happened at the ending of The Giver; however, I believe that Jonas and Gabriel did not survive. I also believe that there could have been a more effective ending to the story; I highly disagree with Lois Lowry’s choice of leaving it up to the reader to decide what happens in the ending of the story, for it leaves too many unanswered questions. Overall, I did not enjoy the ending of The Giver due to its ambiguity.
There are many differences and similarities. The book The Giver and the movie The Truman Show are somewhat alike and somewhat different. Both characters have complicated, yet “perfect” lifestyles. To begin with, in The Truman Show, Truman wanted to go somewhere else.
The Giver by Lois Lowry and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley have many similarities. They both take place in futuristic utopias where happiness is the overall goal. Jonas and Bernard, the major characters in the novels, are both restless individuals who want change. Despite the close similarities, there are many contrasts in the two novels. The childhood, family, and professions arrangements are differently portrayed in the similar novels The Giver and Brave New World.
The Giver is about a boy named Jonas who was chosen to be the community’s next Receiver of Memory. He lived in a community where everything was chosen for the citizens, and everything was perfect. During Jonas' training, he realized that the community was missing something and that there was more in the world. Jonas wanted everybody to know that. The Giver book was then made into a movie. Though the two were based with the same story plot, there are three important differences that results with two different takes on the same story. The three main differences between the book and the movie are Asher and Fiona's Assignments, the similarity all Receivers had, and the Chief Elder's role.
From reading the book and watching the movie, I think the book was more insightful, but the movie was more entertaining. The only problem with the movie is that you don't know what is going through Chance's mind and his background information. The movie does help make some things clearer by seeing it, instead of just picturing it in your mind. The added scenes in the movie helps to put some humor into the story and make it more entertaining. By just watching the movie, some people could be confused if they don't know some background on Chance. I think that by reading the book, you can understand the story better and by watching the movie you can enjoy the story better.
Movie The Giver, directed by Phillip Noyce, is based on Lois Lowry’s book and tells the story how the perfect world would look like. Where everyone is happy, safe, and there is no pain. Jonas is the main character and I will be analyzing how his values and beliefs changes though the movie. This movie is interesting because everyone lives within boundaries where past memory does exist just for the chosen ones. Jonas is one of those people who learns past wisdom and suffers while trying to understand what is the right thing to do.
