Have you ever been in a fight, or felt like the world was against you? Well, Rainsford from“The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell has, and it was much more than just a little squabble. Ransford has to fight against the elements of nature. He has to fight against himself in order to keep calm. But the biggest conflict Rainsford faces, is the man trying to hunt him: General Zaroff. Rainsford has to battle all that life can give him. Rainsford struggles greatly in the battle against nature. The story states: “With his remaining strength, he dragged himself from the swirling waters.” (3) Rainsford is fighting against the harsh seas and trying to swim to shore after he falls off his ship. He needs to keep himself calm, when his conscious is telling him otherwise. Rainsford kept telling himself: “‘I must keep my nerve. I must keep my nerve.’” (11) He was being hunted down, and it put a lot of stress on him, so he had to stay calm and not lose his nerve. He does a great job of it, and it works in his favor. He stays calm and is able to function properly. Rainsford also needs to make himself realize that animals actually do feel fear. He needs to do this so he can work like an animal does. After being hunted himself, he realizes that animals do get very scared. Rainsford especially needs to make himself block out all his fear. General Zaroff. He has to stay alive while General Zaroff is hunting him down and trying to kill him. He has nowhere to go, because he is stranded on an island with no way off. Zaroff says to Rainsford, “‘Your brains against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine’” (10) General Zaroff is talking about how he is going to hunt Rainsford. Rainsford, however, is very clever and sets up a series of traps and ends up beating Zaroff. Later, Zaroff is coming towards Rainsford with his pack of dogs and his torturer, when one of Rainsford’s traps sets off and kills the torturer, Ivan. This stops General Zaroff for long enough for Rainsford to run away. Rainsford ends up jumping off a cliff into rough, rocky waters to evade Zaroff. After he escapes, he swims over to Zaroff’s house and finds him there. He challenges Zaroff to a duel, and ends up killing Zaroff. He beat Zaroff and defeated the last
