Societal issues influence a large group of people and are often controversial. In the novel The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily Danforth, the issue of Homosexuality is a “horror” that rocks the little town of MIles City. The main character Cameron Post an orphan who lives with her grandmother and her aunt Ruth after the death of her parents. Cameron realises that she might be sexually attracted to girls the night that her parents die. Because of this she thinks she caused the accident by committing the sin of being with a girl and thus god punishes her by killing her parents. It doesn't help her case that her aunt is a devout christian who believes that Homosexuality is a sin and disease that needs to be cured, while Cameron grows …show more content…

All of them having homophobic families that saw who they were as diseases and sins. In the center she learned to love herself more , she even found herself being open to different experiences. When her councelor compares homosexulaity to murder she found herself thinking that if it's such a crime to be with other women then what's the body count on those dead whenever homosexuals get together. She found herself standing up for herself to her aunt and telling her that her sexuality was no illness and that if it really was then she was the biggest reason as to why she had it in the first place. The greatest thing that happens in this novel is Cameron accepting herself and not buying into the whole theory of there being a cure to who she is.

The issue of Homosexulity has been a big topic in today’s society that has been very controversial. Some people believe that homosexulity is a sin while other see it as being one's true self and accepting that they are different. The novel The Misconception of Cameron Post by Emily Danforth, explores both ends of this controversy and shows the effects of people being so close minded and failing to accept others for who they are.
