Introduction The media is an important part of our day-to-day lives. No one watches news on their TVs anymore. Everyone (mostly everyone) has a smartphone, tablet or some device they can use to access the Internet. Due to this, the media has become an important part of the Internet. News reaches the public on the Internet first than it does on their televisions. Thus, the media is the “fourth branch of government.” It acts as the survival or the death of many popular and unpopular things based on the test of the attention of the public span. Although some might argue that the media is not the “fourth branch of government,” it in fact is. The aim of this paper is to look at the relationship between the mass media, specifically television, and presidential elections. This paper will focus on the function of television in presidential elections through three main areas: exit polls, presidential debates, and spots. The focus is on television for three reasons. First, television reaches more voters than any other medium. Second, television attracts the greatest part of presidential campaign budgets. Third, television provides the candidates a good opportunity to contact the people directly. A second main theme of this paper is the role of television in presidential elections in terms of representative democracy in the United States.
Television has affected every aspect of life in society, radically changing the way individuals live and interact with the world. However, change is not always for the better, especially the influence of television on political campaigns towards presidency. Since the 1960s, presidential elections in the United States were greatly impacted by television, yet the impact has not been positive. Television allowed the public to have more access to information and gained reassurance to which candidate they chose to vote for. However, the media failed to recognize the importance of elections. Candidates became image based rather than issue based using a “celebrity system” to concern the public with subjects regarding debates (Hart and Trice). Due to “hyperfamiliarity” television turned numerous people away from being interested in debates between candidates (Hart and Trice). Although television had the ability to reach a greater number of people than it did before the Nixon/Kennedy debate, it shortened the attention span of the public, which made the overall process of elections unfair, due to the emphasis on image rather than issue.

Instead, a fundamental reform of the entire system is needed, together with a wider institutional reform of the very structures the media systems work within, our democracies. This will be a difficult task, due to powerful vested interests benefiting from the status quo, including media, political and economic elites. Reforms will need to be driven by campaigns mobilising public support across the political spectrum, to enable the citizens of the world to have a media system that works to strengthen democratic principles as opposed to undermining them. This task is challenging, but it will become easier once people begin to understand the media’s role in policymaking within our democracies.
One way in which government achieves this objective, is by its ability to misuse the media’s ability to set the agenda. Contrary to popular belief, media is in fact an enormous hegemony. In fact, separate independent news organizations do not exist. Rather than creating an independent structured agenda of their own, generally lesser smaller news organizations adapt to a prepared agenda, previously constructed by a higher medium. Based upon this information alone, it is quite apparent that media functions in adherence to the characteristics of a hierarchy.
The media is the main source for informing us about government, politics, worldwide events, etc. I am finding the differences and similarities of the articles from 3 dominant news sources – CNN, NBC, and Fox – to see how each of them framed the anniversary of Gettysburg Address in their articles. How these 3 dominant news channels frame their stories are how people are going to shape their opinion on the event. The textbook definition of framing is “the power of the media to influence how events and issues are interpreted” (Lowi 423). I think the media uses framing to make people think a certain way about a subject, person, event, etc. News sources are going to frame stories so they can influence their viewers to think and feel the way they do by choosing what news stories or events they want to cover. News sources can use framing to distract or inform us on important problems and think in a biased way (Lowi 423).

Thirty years ago, if I told you that the primary means of communicating and disseminating information would be a series of interconnected computer networks you would of thought I was watching Star Trek or reading a science fiction novel. In 2010, the future of mass media is upon us today; the Internet. The Internet is and will only grow in the future as the primary means of delivering news, information and entertainment to the vast majority of Americans. Mass media as we know it today will take new shape and form in the next few years with the convergence and migration of three legacy mediums (Television, Radio, Newspaper) into one that is based on the Internet and will replace these mediums forever changing the face of journalism, media and politics.
