Introduction There is perhaps a no more plangent or evocative melody played from the brass bugle than that of “Taps”. The sounding of the song arouses in the listener a sense of melancholy, solemnity, remembrance, and loss; a stirring of the soul to recall the essence of a life lost in military service. Often accompanied by a 21-gun salute, “Taps” as a burial ceremony has been employed since July of 1862, where the notes were first scrawled on the back of an envelope by a Union general in the aftermath of the Seven Day Battle in order to memorialize the loss of his soldiers. The notes have a scourging effect on the listener, leaving one cornered to countenance the forbidding realities of death and sacrifice. Indeed, “Taps”, calls out …show more content…
There is nothing magical in the notes themselves as they are simply musical intervals produced from a brass element which travel through the air to eventually hit the hearing mechanisms of the ear. Rather, human cognition imbues the song with its beauty and harkens associated and relevant images, feelings, and thoughts to mind. “Taps” is a revered symbol and is part of an elaborate ritual which remains sacred and possesses a contextualized meaning. Yet for many individuals and communities, symbolic gestures of reverence are found to be transitory and in short supply, particularly on the subject of death. Or rather, the social facts are not considered symbolic of anything, but are judged by the majority as appearing out of the blue for the individual or community in question. Take for instance the recent events in Ferguson, Missouri as an example of popular opinion leaving social theory out of the matrix of thought and perspective. In August of 2014, a black unarmed man by the name of Michael Brown lost his life in a bizarre instance where police officer Darren Wilson shot him six times. Its notion that knowledge can simply reflect the world leads to the uncritical identification of reality and rationality: One experiences the world as rational and necessary, thus deflating attempts to change it. Instead, the critical theorists attempt to develop a mode of consciousness and cognition that breaks the identity of reality and rationality, viewing social facts not as inevitable constraints on human freedom…but as pieces of history that can be changed. On a personal note, the reason I have selected the topic of racism in the classroom is two-fold. First, I am employed in a suburban school district where I occasionally witness social inequalities for students of color that play out and dramatically impact learning. A lot of people migrate from different countries to the United States each year. Most of them are looking for education especially for college students. In order to adapt easily to the new surroundings, many parents think their children should come here as soon as possible. However, in order to not forget their origin, the parents decide to send their children to the United States when they are 14-17 years old. Thus, most of them are high school students when they come to the United States. Due to that, there are many students of other races in high school. I think American high school students need to discuss racism. Because racism can cause students to discriminate against students of other races, understanding what causes racism is very important for the high school students, especially the 11th and 12th grade students. Why is it more serious for the junior and senior? According to official statistics, the school bullying statistics shows us that cases are often conflict between the students of different races. Because of rebellion, those students are junior or senior. For instance, one of my friends was treated badly in high school. My friend was a typical Asian boy as same as the others. However, he did not get on well with the other students. The other students always called him a nerd because he was an Asian. They not only called him a nerd, but they also made fun of his name. Due to the unkind nickname, my friend started to cut class. Finally, his parents had to find another school for him. Generally, most of the students think the Asian students are not diplomats, and they only know how to deal with the computers. Racism doesn’t only cause physical bullying, but it is also a severe hurt to one’s pride. Reading “The Unwanted” can make students see clearly how racism put the screws on a kid. As an educator, I think it is my role to counter institutionalized racism and classism. No student should ever be treated differently because of their race. I believe that as a teacher, I need to recognize the backgrounds of all my students and help to teach their beliefs so that the other students understand. I also believe without a complete understanding of a student’s background, it can lead to bullying and fighting.

Racism is extremely ingrained in our society and it seems ordinary (Delgado & Stefanic, 2000). However, many people denounce the expression of any racist belief as immoral (Miles & Brown, 2003) highlighting the complicated nature of racism. Critical Race Theory tries to shed light on the issue of racism, claiming that racism is ingrained in our society both in legal, cultural, and psychological aspects of social life (Tate, 1997). This essay provides us with the opportunity to explore this theory and its influence in the field of education.
Titchener, who was a one student of Wundt, on the other hand, described his system as structuralism, which involves the analysis of the structure of the mind. Tichener broke down consciousness into elemental feelings and sensations. Wundt held the belief that consciousness was vital in scientific psychology, thus dependent on structuralism. He used introspection to study the functions of the mind occurring in active experience. It is however, imperative to note that Wundt’s introspection could not be used to establish higher functions of the mind. He divided the active experiences as feelings and sensations (Titchener, 1915).

For as long as I can remember, working with children is the only thing I have ever wanted to do. I am passionate about teaching students to celebrate their differences and be proud of all the wonderful attributes they were born with. I want to create a classroom where students see others for who they are, instead of what they’re not. My goal is for students to develop empathy and compassion for other people and cultures. Therefore, it is my job as a teacher to acknowledge and eliminate my own biases and prejudices, fully examine my schools policies and practices to ensure that all aspects foster a climate, free of judgement, where all students are able to reach their full potential. Throughout this course, I learned just how important it is for schools, staff, and communities to work together to create multicultural classrooms that support all students regardless of race, culture or sexual orientation. Above all, we all need to remember that “One does not fit all!”
