What if World War II was won by the Nazi party? In the book The Man in the High Castle, by Philip K. Dick, he gives three different plots of what would happen in the perspective of several different people. One of the plots is a German spy named Baynes tries to give information to a Japanese spy, while he barely succeeds. Another plot is of two men named Frank Frink and Ed in their fight for business against Wyndam-Matson. The final plot is about a woman named Juliana Frink and a Nazi assassin named Joe go on a road trip to meet a book author but end up having Juliana kill Joe. Though the plots show a theme of society and class, each person has their own view on civilization. Within the first plot, the book clearly states that Wyndam-Matson is rich and powerful whereas Frank Frink and Ed McCarthy are not. The book quotes, “Well, he thought, it probably would be cheaper to offer them two thousand or so. They’d accept it; that was probably all they …show more content…
wanted. Little fellows like that thought small; to them it would seem like a lot. They’d put in their new business, lose it, be broke again inside a month” (Dick ). We do not get much out of Wyndam-Matson’s point of view, but as a rich, powerful American, he has a particular view on the social situation. For him, one of the big differences in society is not Japanese versus American, but big corporations like him versus the “little fellows” like Frank and Ed. In his point of view we can see that Wyndam-Matson has a largely capitalistic perspective on society. Secondly, in the plot about Childan and his store we can see his hopeful view of society.
For example the novel states, “Joy. If all business days were like this … but it was more than business, the success of his store. It was a chance to meet a young Japanese couple socially, on a basis of acceptance of him as a man rather than him as a yank or at best, a tradesman who sold art objects. Yes, these new young people, of the rising generation, who did not remember the days before the war or even the war itself- they were the hope of the world.Place difference did not have the significance for them” (Dick ). This instance is slightly ironic to see Childan thinking this way. He has been known to be a person who stereotypes the Japanese, and here he is trying to be treated as an individual and not a member of the “yank” group. Childan even expresses a hope that there might be some future social unity among them all. This point of view shows a more hopeful and considerable outlook on social classes in the post-war
era. Thirdly, The text says, “With his hair short and blonde, and in his new clothes, he doesn’t look like the same person, she thought. Do I like him better this way? It was hard to tell. And me-when I’ve been able to arrange for my hair being done, we’ll be two different persons, almost. Created out of nothing or, rather, out of money. But I just must get my hair done, she told herself” (Dick ). We do not spend much time in the Rocky Mountain States, but they seem a lot like our states. For instance, here we see Juliana thinks about both her and Joe’s appearance. But notice the little mention of money between two comments about getting her hair done. Juliana may know how money can alter societies, but she still uses it for her appearance.
As a nation, the Australian people have respected the “underdogs” in many events throughout history, an example is KERRYN McCann, the 38-year mother of two from Bulli, winning the 2006 Commonwealth Games marathon, two years before dying from cancer. Now in 2017, The Australian people have the chance to celebrate the work they have contributed to the film industry and to show the world what it means to be Australian, and with the Australian Film Festival coming up they can do that. Personally I am not of Australian nationality, but I have come to notice the importance for the Australian people to acknowledge their work in the film industry, as it gives them a chance to
Would you be able to kill your lifelong companion? George Milton had to make that choice in John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men. After a whole bunch of misadventures with his mentally handicapped giant, Lennie Small. Lennie accidently murdered a woman out of innocence. While the ranch men search for Lennie, George made the decision to give Lennie a merciful death. I believe that George should have killed Lennie because he would have been put in an institution, Curley would have been cruel to him, and George had to give him a merciful death.
1.Though The Glass Castle is brimming with unforgettable stories, Which scenes were the most memorable for you? Which were the most shocking, the most inspiring, the funniest?
The Great Depression of the 1930’s caused widespread poverty, but the popular culture of the time did not reflect this. People wanted to escape from this harsh time so movies, dancing and sports became very popular. Radios broadcasted boxing matches and boxers became stars. The heavyweight champion James J. Braddock aka “Cinderella Man,” gained popularity. James Braddock gained fame by winning many fights and proving everyone wrong when they said he was too old and couldn’t win.
The tone right away reduces the Japanese student to a coconut-headed Jap, sly and cunning, and must have cheated his way through life, although the boy is obviously intelligent, being head of the class. Stratton-Porter bars no discriminatory remarks by portraying the American girl, "Sweet Linda" spouting against the Japanese boy who heads the class: "Before I would let a Jap, either a boy or girl, lead in my class, I would give up going to school and go out and see if I could beat him growing lettuce and spinach." (Doc 6) It goes on to protest the foreigners' success, fearing that it would bring in "greater numbers, better equipped for battle of life than we are." (Doc 6) Another public source that also feared a sort of a revolution was the anonymous "Because You're a Jew," generalizing the Jew as a cheat and a swindler, always winning contests, sly speaking and greedy. "The Jew is winning everywhere. By fair means or by foul means he wins.
The opening chapters of Philip K Dick’s The Man in the High Castle begin by introducing main characters, describing the setting, and providing insight into the current conflicts that shape this alternate history novel. Flannery O 'Connor is considered to be one of America 's most finest fiction writers in her time. Growing up as an only child, O’Connor was a devout catholic. All of her stories focused on morals, ethics, and religion. Most of her characters were southern protestants who were forced to undergo change as a result of painful and violent situations, by doing so this brought them closer to God. Her work is said to be classified as gothic, meaning it is characterized as gloomy, grotesque, mysterious, and violent. In A Good Man is Hard to Find, she uses many literary devices like irony, foreshadowing, and tone to convey her message throughout the story. What makes a person good; is it their choices, their actions, or maybe their beliefs?
All in all, there will always be people that will judge every move everyone else does in life just like the grandmother did in the story. As a result, people will just have to learn how to deal with it because if others decide to judge them they are probably doing something right. However, if you decide to judge someone else before you do it turn the critical eye on yourself and judge your personal life and ask yourself how is your life doing?
Revolutionary is defined as “something markedly changed or introducing radical change” ("Related Queries." Revolutionary). Some events that had a radical change was the English Civil War and the Glorious Revolution in Europe. These events began when there was a split between the Parliament and King Charles I. Both sides had many arguments, and were not willing to back down over the principles that they had about the manner of the government, and how all those problems could be solved. The country then split into two sides, one was people who supported the Parliament, and then theres people who supported the Royalists, and both sides had fought many wars over the situation. This battle ended by the execution of King Charles I. The English Civil War and the Glorious Revolution were truly revolutionary events and these events had many dramatic changes that occurred and changed their society. These dramatic changes changed Europe in it’s social and political ways that the Europeans gained rights and both events had an effect to their economic ways as well.
It is a lot of fun to have a friendly dog for a pet. On the other hand, nobody wants to have a mean dog for a pet. What some people do not know is that the dog that is mean to some people sometimes is nice to others such as his or her owners. The same can be said for humans. There sometimes is good even in the worst of people. In Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations the reader can see that there can be some good in the worst of men.
Throughout the novel Great Expectations, Pip's character and personality goes through some transformations. He is somewhat similar at the beginning and end, but very different while growing up. He is influenced by many characters, but two in particular:Estella and Magwitch, the convict from the marshes. Some things that cause strength or growth in a person are responsibility, discipline, and surrounding oneself around people who are challenging and inspiring. He goes through many changes some good and some bad
In the play Othello by William Shakespeare, we see a black man marrying a wealthy young white woman named Desdemona. The black man named Othello serves the Italian government, as a general, this man is a very a loyal and trusting person. Othello is easily persuaded as stated by Iago, his ancient, who wrights this passage about him ““The Moor is of a free and open nature, That thinks men honest that but seem to be so, And will as tenderly be led by the nose As asses are. (Act 1, 3,405.)“ This shows us the kind of man Othello is a trusting man, and thinks that everyone is telling the truth. This opens Othello, to believe on the lies that Iago, is telling him. However, Othello is not a stupid man, he is a general after all, and must be shown proof when people put up arguments especially against his own wife, cheating on him. Now the question is why did Othello not look for his own proof of the acquisition laid up against his wife cheating. He surly is not stupid, considering that he has such a high position. In this essay, I will explain why, Othello does not look for more proof, of his wife’s affairs and merely believes Iago.
The book “Othello” and movie “Othello” are both surrounded with race and jealousy. Othello is the only black guy in this play. Because of his capability make him more stronger in the play. All the people around Othello are white, and you can clearly notice that in the movie. Desdemona is also a important role in this play. She is white, which makes she and Othello not that great to be together. That’s why even though Othello knows she loves him, he still can’t believe what she says. Finally he kills Desdemona. Othello has no self-confidence, because he was different than other. That’s why after Iago tells him that Desdemona is cheating on him, he easily believes. Iago hate Othello and envies him. Because of the power Othello has, makes him feel his position is really low. The jealousy urges him to make a plan to revenge Othello, so he asks help from Cassio. Cassio is a character who is also jealous Othello, because he loves Desdemona too. He is the white guy, so thinks he is more suited to be with Desdemona.Jealous is a big factor in this play, also it’s how this play starts and end.

The King is dead and Lord Tywin is asking Tommen, his grandson (the new King) what he thinks what makes a good King. Tommen lists off attributes such as; holiness, just, and strength. Lord Tywin, agrees that these are all good qualities to have. However, he says holiness is a naïve characteristic to have as a King [leader]. Tywin, explains that being a just King [leader] can leave you in a vulnerable place if you are not careful. Furthermore, having strength as a King [leader] is a very powerful characteristic to have when you have some many others looking towards to lead. But, all of these King [leader] attributes are nothing on their own, you can not have one without the others, but there is something missing in this picture. Tommen points out that they (pervious Kings) all lacked wisdom.
