The Main Characters in The Jilting of Granny Weatherall and A Rose for Emily
The main characters in the stories ?The Jilting of Granny Weatherall'; and ?A Rose for Emily'; have several important similarities. Although the plots, settings, and themes are different, Granny Weatherall and Miss Emily share three distinct traits that make them much alike. These similarities, however, lead to very different outcomes for each character. The main similarities between these two characters are that they are both very stubborn, alone for an extended period of time in their lives, and left by their first loves. The way that each character deals with these similar characteristics and situations, however, is very different.
The stories begin by portraying both Granny Weatherall and Miss Emily as very stubborn old women. ?The Jilting of Granny Weatherall'; starts out with Granny defying the doctor who comes to visit her, and in the beginning of ?A Rose for Emily';, Emily defies her tax collectors. Each woman is stubborn with denial. Granny Weatherall refuses the fact that she is dying and fights it with many excuses and anger. Even as she dies at the end, Granny is still fighting the fact that she is dying and never actually accepts her death. Miss Emily denies that her father died, and then refuses Homer Baron?s rejection by killing him and keeping his body. Emily then withers away in her denial, waiting for her death.
Each woman is alone for a long period in her life. Granny Weatherall is left to raise her family and her ranch with no help. She is made stronger by all of her solitary hard work. Miss Emily?s father dies and she is left in the old house with only a servant for several years. She meets Homer, and after he is killed, she is alone again. Miss Emily, however, does not grow stronger; with each solitary period she grows more disturbed.
Both women are left by their first loves. Granny Weatherall is left at the altar of her wedding to George. Granny is hurt, but she marries again, raises a family, and lives a happy life. Emily, on the other hand, cannot handle the rejection of Homer and murders him in attempt to keep him in her life.
Ellen Weatherall from "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall" suffers from a state of demension throughout the story. Her thoughts and memories grow tangled and confused with age, causing her to live in the dark. ""Here's Doctor Harry." "I won't see that boy again. He just left five minutes ago." "That was this morning, Mother. It's night now. . .""(779 -780). Ellen Weatherall's troubled mind can compare to the demented mind of Emily Grierson. Emily experienced a high status life, but that high status brought her down. Since Emily could never date or really experience a normal life, she surrounded herself with darkness and shut herself off from the world. Her mind slowly warped itself, clouding her morals and better judgment. Emily, like Ellen Weatherall, experienced mental trauma that tormented their thoughts. Ellen lost her child Hapsy and lost her fiance George, while Emily lost her father and eventually Homer Barron. In the pages of the short stories, A Worn Path and A Rose For Emily we are able to see a similar side and connection between the two. As we look at the theme, tone, and morals we are able to better grasp the conflict in these two stories, while detecting whether the two protagonists, Miss Emily and Phoenix Jackson are mentally crazy.

The two stories A Rose for Emily and A Good Man Is Hard to Find differ more than they do correspondingly. Although they have similar endings, both have morbid thoughts both in the story itself and at the end. They share similarities in their thoughts of Blacks/ African Americans, but have their differences when it comes to their image as a lady. In conclusion, both Miss Emily and the grandmother can not let go of the past and go into the present which does not allow them to accept change easily. This further complicates their lives ending up in their melancholy deaths.
This power keeps the behavior of the oppressed well within the set guidelines of the oppressor (Freire, 2000, pg. 47). Critical Race Theory outlines this system of oppression as it relates to white and non-white races. By using the critical race theory coupled with the system of oppression described by Freire (2000), I propose that within the system of oppression, the oppressor must keep its own members in line with the prescribed guidelines by reinforcing the social norms from birth. Freire (2000) suggest that the interest of the oppressors lie in “changing the consciousness of the oppressed not the system” (pg.34). Identifying as white, therefore, starts at birth when members of the white class work to reinforce social norms that began with our founding fathers at Plymouth Rock. This long history of white privilege was taught to me and I continue to teach it to my children. Granny Weatherall is prideful and has a need for control. In contrast, Miss Emily lives in a fantasy land and is obstinate. Like anyone dealing with trauma, Miss Emily and Granny must find a way to deal with it. Their differing personality traits dictate how their coping mechanisms. Granny Weatherall pushes away the hurt, and Miss Emily denies it in favor of clinging to a fantasy. Both stories give off an unexpected twist, each woman helps to make each title into an object of either denial or exception. Even though both stories have great similarities, the authors' individual points of view resulted into the concerning of their surroundings. In the end of both stories, the items that they psychologically and then physically create take over the wife and Emily, their minds became weak that quickly took over them completely. Soon finalizing their mental and/or physical illness to their own time of death.

In “ A Rose for Emily”, William Faulkner tells the complex tale of a woman who is battered by time and unable to move through life after the loss of each significant male figure in her life. Unlike Disney Stories, there is no prince charming to rescue fallen princess, and her assumed misery becomes the subject of everyone in the town of Jefferson, Mississippi. As the townspeople gossip about her and develop various scenarios to account for her behaviors and the unknown details of her life, Emily Grierson serves as a scapegoat for the lower classes to validate their lives. In telling this story, Faulkner decides to take an unusual approach; he utilizes a narrator to convey the details of a first-person tale, by examining chronology, the role of the narrator and the interpretations of “A Rose for Emily”, it can be seen that this story is impossible to tell without a narrator.

At the beginning of the story when her father died, it was mentioned that “[Emily] told [the ladies in town] that her father was not dead. She did that for three days, with the ministers calling on her, and the doctors, trying to persuade her to let them dispose of the body” (626). Faulkner reveals Emily’s dependency on her father through the death of her father. As shown in this part of the story, Emily was very attached to her father and was not able to accept that fact that he was no longer around. Also to completely get it out of your sight lock it in the glove box, truck or deep pocket so there’s no temptations of getting ahold of it (Coleman). If none of this helps and you still have the urge to go on your phone, pull over put the car in park and do what you have to do.
